Idea:Â Fitbit of the future, but for women's health https://mariluip.tumblr.com/post/172402691133/speculative-design-final-project-ideas https://mariluip.tumblr.com/post/172644791508/project-inspiration
Story/Idea Framing: Creating a futuristic electronic bracelet for women in the Dominican Republic. A bracelet that would be able to track all aspects of a women's desired health stats. This works perfect in a world where access to medical care can be more accessible to low-income communities while having the cost of the tech offset by the rich. My prototype would be useful for women in the Dominican Republic to, specifically, watch their hormone levels and increase their chance of conception. In this future, it is critical to watch these levels as conception rates are severely lowered and women have small chances of getting pregnant in which they need to track those times and maximize their chances. These lower levels of pregnancy are due in fact too high levels of stress, tainted food and access to proper medical care. With my bracelets, these lower income women specifically will have at home access to medical care and only make the trip out to their main doctor, when they can see right on their wrists they need help. They can even send those stats right to their doctor and speed up their process to adequate healthcare.
How I did it: My first prototype was created with cardboard, then I 3d printed my idea, but that didnât work out to well as I overestimated how long it would take to print and my ability to learn how to 3d model in a few short weeks. I would not be able to see my full idea come to life at that time. Instead, I went back to the drawing board and created more physical copies with crating material like foam, towel pieces and eventually decided on Acrylic with a leather strap for comfort. I then added shiny paper to the bracelet center to place the screen and eventually added the on/off/change screen, needle and charging buttons.

Prototype Post #5
For my final design, I decided to use acrylic for the bands and leather for the outside fabric. I want to add some type of design which I will figure out in my final iteration. Possibly bejeweled, âjeanedâ out, or something like that.
To tell my story, I was thinking about doing a video showing the app/watch interface with its purpose/origin. Since my story revolves around the stresses of women's health in the Caribbean, I was thinking about doing the voiceover in Spanish. I also wanted to do a sample online shop. For the video, I am still trying to figure out how I want to plan it out. I want to make it as minimal as possible, but im not sure how to do that while involving both as an advertisement for my tech piece and adding in my culture.Â

Logo & Font/Name designs: Presenting to class for selection help.

Museum of the Future Response
Q: How you think design will change the future. Will it be a positive or negative thing?
In this article, I got the idea that the future of not only museums, but outdoors spaces, and homes would all be centered around purposeful design. In this I mean that every piece of tech will have more than one purpose, it will be a âsmart mirrorâ that gives you health stats like the article talks about. Everything seems to be designed to be minimal and compact. Perhaps this is points to a society that is less wasteful and more conscious about what happening to the planet. I think design will help aid this endeavor to cleanse the planet. If we create items that are âall in 1â˛sâ we will have less waste and a cleaner planet overall. Design can also aid in easing overstimulation of the future. Nowadays, we have so many things attracting our attention, our phones, laptops, iPads, fit-bits, etc. With minimalist and futuristic design, we will be able to control our stimulations. This would less to a less anxious society. Less things = less worry.
One of the examples they mentioned was the Tellartâs Museum of the Future in which they take on the topic of the environment in hopes of âreimagine[ing] climate change and look at it as one of the biggest and most exciting opportunities of our generation.â In this one they tackled the concerns of food, water, and the urban environment and how cities would operate these concerns in the future. The design of the future can bring to life important topics in new and fascinating ways. I really like what theyâve done in these museums and how the government has also wanted to get in on the action. If we are to creating effective change, the nations leaders must take part in some form.
I feel design will have a positive impact on our society moving into the future. If those in need are creating what the need through design and tech, then problems can be solved quicker and with higher chance of success. What iâve learned most about design over my years in this industry, is that you must first be bale to spot the problem. Without a clear goal, a design is worthless and non-efficient. Â

Outpost #10
For this outpost I worked to refresh my skills in InDesign. I havenât worked in this program since senior year of high school so I decided to take on this project over my usual design work of posters and t-shirts. I wanted to challenge myself especially since Iâll probably have even less time next semester to practice my design skills.Â
This one is the cover for the Nia awards program/brochure. Canât really show the rest since the event has not passed.
This one is for Black Grad:
I am also working on Latine grad since I am the most senior designer with InDesign experience. Its nice knowing so many design programs. Its almost like a super power in my office.

Museum Trip
For my museum trip, I decided to go to various events at the Tribeca Film Festival.Â

The first event was a film screening of âWhen She Runsâ about a 20-something runner with dreams of competing at the Olympic Games who sacrifices everything to pursue her passion. It was a very minimalist movie focused around the trials and tribulations of a girl from a dead end town. Personally, I didnât really like it that much, mostly because it seemed to âeverydayâ for me, but that might have been the point?
The second event was the âTRIBECA TALKS: STORYTELLERS - BRADLEY COOPER AND ROBERT DE NIROâ which was SUPER cool! I got there about 3 hours early and was able to get a seat somewhere near the middle with a great view of Cooper and De Niro.Â
This Storytellers track was created to have a sit down with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro to discuss their careers, projects and future plans. I thought this was going to be more of an interview style event, but am glad it turned out differently. They made it more of a conversation reminiscing about their favorite times on set with âAmerican Sniperâ, âMeet the Fockersâ, âSilver Linings Playbookâ and such movies. Being a big movie person and having watched nearly all off their movies, it was easy to follow along. They discussed the future and current state of affairs in film making and the business. Cooper, specifically, said that artists are needing to become more versatile with the increase in skill demand. So for him, he went from just an actor, to producing, directing, editing etc. He said heâs fallen in love with directing specifically and discussed his new film and directorial debut of a modern adaptation of A Star is Born, which he also produced, co-wrote, and stars in alongside Lady Gaga. I took this his shift in career to be applicable to all fields in which in order to stay competitive, you have to develop many skills and become a versatile hire.
De Niro was more of a moderator for this panel so he mainly asked questions and chuckled humbly, this in when one of his director friends off-stage joked that De Niro is always quiet. He only knows what to say when heâs told.
One of the other useful pieces of advice I took in, was that teamwork is essential to creating quality content. But not just any team, you must network with people you trust and know have good work ethic. This was particularly interesting because it seems that no matter the industry, having a solid network is needed to get ahead.Â
Oh also, some guy from Pearl Jam was sitting behind me and everyone was going crazy, so that was also really cool. I was also blessed to be in the same building at Christina Aguilera, Saoirse Ronan, and other cool famous people.

The third event was a world premiere screening of âUnited Skatesâ, a documentary about the African-American roller-rink community across the nation and trials they have faced with re-zoning policies and racism that have lead to a dwindling skating community across the US. This was probably my favorite one so far! It really brought to light the race propelled policies that take place in the smallest places of government such as city policies to close down rinks in black neighborhoods. I was then able to talk to the actors in the movie as they had a Q&A session afterward. Needless to say, through this Q&A, there was not a dry eye in the house. You could feel how hurt they were by the closing down of a beloved family favorite. On my way out, I was able to ask questions about their personal futures and gave my own opinions and suggestions from past experiences. This was a great experience!Â

Prototype Story
I donât know about you, but I would like to know my health information when I need it, and not during the 2 trips to the doctors a year. For my projects, I am creating a bracelet that is sort of like a futuristic Fitbit in the sense that it measures everything that takes doctors a week to process. My bracelet will be geared towards women's health. I am still working on a name, but this bracelet will help women keep track of their hormone levels, vitamin count, steps a day, blood oxygen levels, white blood cell counts, and menstrual cycle. All these are important aspects to keep an eye on especially for the increasing number of women infertility issues plaguing the futuristic Western hemisphere.Â
Source:Â
My bracelet would be connected to an encrypted phone app that would keep your information secure with the ability to send to any of your doctors. The bracelet screen itself would be customizable with the ability to list the 3 most important health aspects to focus on as well as heart rate, steps and time.

Prototype Post #4
So for this one, I wanted to take a step back and reevaluate the actual design with paper. I wanted to do a futuristic minimal design, but this might not be the most efficient in collecting and analyzing data. For final materials, I wanna try to do resin and/or regular 3d PLA with some design with like leather or some soft fabric. I would also like to do a ring set, but thatâs only if I have enough time to do them all.Â
I still need to work on sizing everything right, as I thought I had a proper size for a wrist and it was way too small. So far what has worked is measuring different types of wrists and ring sizes in order to find an average size that would work for my prototype. What hasn't worked so far has been the whole retractable needle idea. I think I would need to create some type of whole under the screen area with a hot glued âneedleâ.
I was also thinking of just doing the frame in layers of acrylic and adding a leather design on the back. Or possibly a 3D printed frame with the leather design.
For presentation, I might do like a shopify store or dramatic video like from handsmaid tale.

Outpost #9
In high school, I used to create little characters for illustrator projects so I kinda wanted to do that again. I created an âaverageâ Admissions Ambassador where I work. I didnât submit this for anything, just wanted to create something different and kinda stereotypical at the same time. My vision was a typical NYU student i.e. hipster, minimal, cool..... :P

How to Use Design to Tell a Story Response
This article illustrates the importance and need for design through a clear narrative. In essence, your design should tell a story, not just be visually appealing. They then go on to say how you need to understand how design affects people and create a piece centered around that in which your message would come across in a clear manner. I agree that you should cater your designs towards your audience, but I donât agree that it always needs to be understandable. Sometimes art can just be art. No rhyme nor reason.Â
As for their creative process, I feel that I also follow the mantra they did for the CBS redesign in finding a philosophy, direction, purpose and motivation for a design. I liked the part where they mentioned to think about an experience that made you feel a similar  way and convey those feelings through your design. That's a great tip to help a designer connect their own real experiences with the design water it's they own personal project or commissioned. I sometimes do this backwards. I start crating and along the way I find its purpose, but I guess it depends on the project. The other tip I thought was useful, was to see your design from another medium. Seeing the various aspects of a design is helpful in identifying what areas need to be altered to fit a universal setting. The most important insight I got from this article is that you need to have inspiration and a story in order to have direction and a process. You have to make the viewer feel something when they look at your design in order for it to be a success. Color, typography, and style are all super important parts of design, but all these things mean nothing if they donât convey a message. It's just words and illustrations without a story.Â

Prototype Update #3
After the cardboard prototype, I got some feedback on trying to think about the specifics of my project. Specifics such as its uses, access to data, style, usability and such. I am still thinking about these, but am going in the direction of a women's health Fitbit style of project. I need to work on the design of this bracelet, and its material. I have never 3d printed for a project with such specifics, so I need to think over the material and if I will even stick with 3D Printing.
As for framing my story, I am hoping to focus on the people that would need this most. So I would trace the history of those who need it and make a point that they didnât have this type of health access before. So for example, I could talk about women with IVF and how monitoring their cycle is so difficult. My bracelet would help keep track of all this. Here are some shots:

Outpost #8
My outpost this week is a little different. I was one of 99 designers chosen out of 1,000+ applicants, to attend a design conference called âDesignationâ in Tribeca at Springs Studio. Designation is described as a conference for college students focused around the âversatility of a career in design, how design is applied differently across industries, and what it looks like to be a design leader facing the business and social challenges of our world.â

Keynotes included Abbott Miller of Pentagram, Debbie Millman Host of Design Matters, Dana Arnett of Aiga, and Peter Boyce ii vc of general catalyst.Â

We also had some really cool smaller seminars with people like current Head of Research at Slack, Christina Janzer and Lawrence Azerrad, Grammy award winning designer from LADdesign.

We then went to the Freedom Tower Observatory after hours!

Our second day consisted of more panels, seminars and workshops. One of our workshops was even centered around prototyping! This workshop was called âSketch Your Way To UX Successâ with Brian Bimschleger, Head of Strategy at Arthur. This workshop was formulated to learn innovative techniques to generate new ideas through sketching when your stuck on problems. For my sketch during this prototyping session, we used a random word generator to draw up UX apps centered around those words with theme of âFlowersâ in mind for 4 mins. My words Hulk Hogan, GeoLocator, and 1 pager. These are my sketches:

We then voted which designs were most/least effective, and best idea. My first idea (Hulk Hogans flower sending app for wrestlers) was voted worst, but my GeoLocator (Finding and sending flowers based on what grows in your area) was voted the best! You win some, you loose some.Â

This session was really effective in helping me come up with new UX ideas. The different ideations of our sketches was helpful in simplifying my ideas. Towards the beginning I had mostly words for my app designs, but Brian suggested eliminating words and then my sketches became shaped around drawings and shapes.
We later had a âbrain dumpâ in which he had to list all the insights and observations we learned about throughout the conference in 2 mins. Our goal was to fill out up the table with post it notes!

This conference really opened my eyes to the possibilities and constant growth in this field. And since we couldnât use our laptops throughout the conference, not only did I get to connect and learn with new people, but also destress from the constant news cycle of our rapid fire world.Â
Overall, is was a great experience and left with so many ideas and with all the networking, I have new and improved ways of creating my content! I hope to start tinkering with reformatted UX and even data visualization soon.Â
Here are some more pics of the cool people I met and more of me! :)

Output Post #7
For this weeks output post, I was trying to create a logo for my friend's theoretical record company. It was named âGlacier Recordsâ through a random name generator. I wanted to stick to the name by having a glacier or something icy and a record as the main attraction.Â

History Of Modern Day Headphones
A journey through time.........:O

1. The first prototype of modern looking âtelephoneâ headphones was invented by Nathaniel Baldwin who created them in his kitchen in Utah. After his initial prototype began working, he started selling them to the US Navy. Since Baldwin could make a limited amount he partnered with Wireless Specialty Apparatus Co. to create a factory that could cater to military demand. (1919)

2. After the success of the first pair, other countries started catching on and making their own. The next pair of headphones were made be a German company called âBeyerdynamicsâ who made the first dynamic headphones named DT-48. (1937)

3. A jazz musician from Milwaukee, John C Koss, invented the first âstereoâ headphones created for people wanting to listen to music at home. These headphones weighed up to 5lbs. Since home used records sales went up so did headphone usage and thus Koss dominated the market through the 70s. He even customized headphones to have themes of bands such as the BeatlePhonesâ. Later in the 60s early 70s, Koss created the first electrostatic headphones called ESP/6. (1958)
4. As home headphones started to become increasingly popular, people wanted to be able to take their music anywhere. This is when Sony came out with the first Walkman called the MDR-3L2. This music carrier rivaled regular headphones because of how light and mobile they were. (1979)

5. As technology started to become more compact, the market started seeing a shift and thus headphone creators followed. Through 1980-1990s, companies started creating earbuds with jacks that could be stored in your pocket and hooked up to any music playing item. Through the early 2000s, different variations of the same earbuds started to come out and grew in popularity with Apples headphones that came with an iPhone purchase. (1990s)
6. In more recent years, celebrities like Diddy and Justin Beiber have started to endorse headphones like they would shampoos, beer, and clothing brands. Many celebrities today use market tactics to advertise headphone brands in their music videos and social media pages as a means to pay production costs. Luxury headphones like Beat By Dre and Skullcandy started growing in popularity and thus elevating the whole market. Headphones are no longer about just listening to music, but a mark of status. (2008)
7. Most recently, new trends have swept the headphones/earphones market. From call features to noise canceling, phone compatibility and Bluetooth discoverability, headphones are not just becoming an accessory we utilize at home, but part of our everyday lives. You canât walk around any city or college campus without seeing students hooked up to some headphone. These little pieces of plastic have slowly integrated themselves into our lives and become everyday necessities. (Now)
