“Brgy. Bombers at P.Paredes St.”

known by most FEU and UST students because of the barangay covered court that is been used for training and games such as basketball and volleyball.

Yesterday, November 30, 2019 I have a conversation with the kapitan of the barangay, the man who was seating on bench wearing blue shirt and he share some of the Disaster Risk Management in their community.

He confidently told me that the community of bombers improved a lot within these past years ever since when he was one kagawad of the barangay. Before the street was one of the places that are affected during heavy rains especially when the Espana blvd. is already flooded the water enters the houses.

The safe and security of the community especially the children are one of the concern of barangay because before strangers usually loiter around the are and stay late in the night. Therefore, they mandate within in their community that by 10 PM no one should be loitering around and penalties will be encountered once they violate it. Also they elevated the road of the street to address to the concern of flood.

In every country, we could avoid the fact that we are not safe when unexpected calamities and disaster came even if we are in a good environment. The best thing to do is to be prepared and knowledgeable. and it is through discipline like what kapitan said that we can achieve readiness and reduce the risk of injuries and death among the community. It help us to be independent among ourselves because in this kind of situation the first thing to do is to help yourself because the government and other institutions are delayed. One must know the HAZARDOUS place to avoid when disaster happen and know the SAFEST place to stay and apply the necessary PRACTICES done by your community.

AS A MEMBER OF THIS COUNTRY I surely believe that by improving our HEALTH and EDUCATION will give rise to a better community. It is a domino effect with proper and enhance education, our country can harvest good and educated leaders and citizens that will eventually embodied all the learning in the school including this disaster management. And it is through the good health lies a energy to execute these society roles properly and maintain them. Them infrastructures, facilities, military and economy will follow once these two, HEALTH and EDUCATION is properly achieved.

These two was the common issues that they encounter, yet I asked him about fire prevention, earthquake preparedness and other services that the barangay do to help the community. The kapitan told me that they regularly held seminars on these hazardous situation by inviting proper authorities to their community and he showed me through his phone some documentation of these events. The secretary of the barangay have all the files regarding the BDRRM, Safety Map and etc. however, I did not get a chance to talk to her because she was no present that time. The kapitan told me that there are assigned committees for disaster management, health, safe and security and etc. that are very efficient.

He also acknowledges that area may possibly encounter hazardous event due to the structure of the houses, electrical wiring and location of the barangay that is why they are promoting a good discipline within the community to prevent such unexpected calamities by being updated with the news, inform about disaster management and alert. As I have observed they are maximizing their resources by using their second floor as the safe place during floods and the covered court for earthquake. I also asked kapitan about the recent issue regarding the white van that’s been roaming around the nearby cities harvesting organs from people. He hold me that using his connections he had gathered some information regarding the plate numbers and share these to the community and remind them that avoid to be outside at 10PM -5AM alone.

Every community as dictated by the government, every town, barangay or province should have this Disaster Management for the safety and security of the people. I realized that every time I passed to the bombers I observed they always held events that make the community active like Mini Liga, Seminars, zumba and Eucharistic Celebrations. These factors may contribute to the fact that the community sees the barangay officials builds a good connection to them and act as a good leaders for the community to follow thus, discipline is observed.
