Outlive the motherfucker. That's what you're going to do. Survive and thrive out of sheer spite if necessary. Live for the day that nature takes it's course and you wake up in a world that no longer has them in it.
Apply where applicable. Repeat as necessary.

(parent feeding a baby in the 1800s before airplanes were invented) here comes the nothing
#fun fact paper airplanes predate airplanes#they were called paper darts before#And a little bit after because the earliest airplanes didn't look like that

"I don't want to read this" is totally valid.
"This is disgusting to me" is totally valid.
"I don't want to read this because it is disgusting to me" is totally valid.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.

Judging from the trailer they are totally doing a lot of symbolism, however part of that symbolism is that tight lacing corsets represents Cathy getting forcibly repressed, and Heathcliff with his scissors is here liberator because he cuts the corset
Which is ridiculous, because that's not even their dynamic
Yes, she does get repressed at some point after she is sick and spends time at Thrushcross Grange- but it's more complicated than simply someone else forcing the repression on her and Heathcliff liberating her. For one thing, she quite clearly goes along with it herself (although obviously one can make all sorts of essay topics about how free her consent really is given the society she lives in- god knows what kind of inheritance Heathcliff will receive when her father dies, and I doubt she could count on her brother to give her any sort of support since he is a Douchebag). For another, she perversely REFUSES to be "liberated" by returning to Heathcliff and to her previous wild life of not caring what society thinks about her.
She could! She lives in the middle of bumfuck nowhere with nobody around besides the poncy neighbors and her dysfunctional family, with no indication that she is going to need to function in the broader world at any point in her life. Also, while her future support is obviously a concern, she's not exactly known for impulse control. She just doesn't.
It's much more complicated and interesting and layered than simply "society represses her and Heathcliff sets her free with hot hot sex"
But apparently that's what we're getting

Dear Lord, Marzi, someone put that trailer in front of me and I foolishly pressed play and I was holding myself together pretty ok and then there were scissors cutting up a dress and tightlacing on bare skin and I couldn't make it to the end of it I'm sorry to inflict this on you but I need to scream and I know you understand the feeling
no no I get it
one thing I've seen that annoys me is the characterization of people who don't like this adaptation as prudish or anti-sex
like no
I don't care if Heathcliff eats Cathy out onscreen or whatever. I don't even mind a modern soundtrack!
I just want a movie claiming to adapt Wuthering Heights to actually be Wuthering Heights. and I don't think that's asking too much
(also modernizing costumes in a historical movie is lazy and cowardly. if you're going to go inaccurate, do it in a way that leans into the artistic and unusual aspects of the period. a 21st-century audience's ability to find the designs sexy should not be your guiding star)
(but then it seems like Sexy is this movie's guiding star in all things, at the expense of the book, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised)
#ask#anon#people are derisively asking if the critics hate Moulin Rouge too and okay here's the thing#1. Moulin Rouge is not an adaptation of anything#2. Moulin Rouge is about a PERFORMANCE VENUE and all the characters are PERFORMERS. having it be a huge over-the-top musical#makes sense with the storyline#3. the costumes in Moulin Rouge at least kind of remember that it's set in 1899 most of the time#4. ...but when they don't it's less egregious because again. PERFORMERS. half of what you see onscreen are diagetically costumes#or rehearsal outfits or Sexy Courtesan Lingerie(tm)#this is not remotely Moulin Rouge

reminder that if you reblog any kind of post threatening bad luck for not reblogging, without tags (I block "chain post" and "bad luck post") I instantly unfollow you
I get it if you have to do it for anxiety or OCD reasons- although I highly recommend doing Immunity Dog if you struggle with that -but please tag it. if not, bye, because MY anxiety can't handle that shit being on my dash and there's no way I'm passing it on to anyone else
(good luck posts with no consequences for not sharing are fine, though I do tag those myself at a mutual's request)
(in Immunity Dog we trust)

the time to be a mean dyke is now. be a killjoy feminist and take things too seriously, we’ve been too nice about girl math and girl dinner and pink jobs and the general infantilization of women and it’s gotten us nowhere. be a buzzkill now, for our future and our dignity
