And you’ll keep the garden looking nice for me? I think at this point you’re a pro gardener...they were probably just keeping me on because I’m really good at lifting rocks. And Brinn? Promise me you won’t give up? You’re intelligent and kind and beautiful and witty and a million other things. Just no giving up.

This was so much more difficult than he had envisioned it in his head. He had known for a few days now, and the feeling that it was coming had lingered days before that too. He had foolishly thought it would get easier as the days passed and if he prepared himself for it, but the way her voice sounded and the feeling of his heart being squeezed weren’t things he could ignore. “You don’t have to say it.” He didn’t look at her for a few minutes, silent as he took her hand in his lap and just held it with both of his own hands. “I don’t want to, either. We can just pretend we did, okay? You’ll come visit me on your next trip to the mainland, right? Because if you don’t, you’re going to get a stern talking to from the little one. And you’ll keep taking photos and you’ll develop them and send them to me, right? In exchange I promise you a lifetime of my neighbours bathtub wine.”

Brinn was hitting on all points he knew to be true. This was no place to raise a child, but he wasn’t supposed to be raising a child right now - at least not like this. His mind reeled with thoughts that strayed far away from his giving and selfless nature, thoughts that desperately wanted to hold on to the happiness he had found with Brinn, and thoughts that were questionably dark and unforgiving. It wasn’t right to be angry at someone for dying. His right hand lifted to her cheek, his thumb gently wiping away the tears that had escaped, while he brought her other hand to his lips to press a kiss to it. “You deserve that too, Brinn. You should reach out to your brothers. There’s no possible way they don’t miss you just like I know I will.”

Mateo’s heart beat felt as though it were going to fling from his chest, but this was what had to happen, wasn’t it? He knew what Brinn would go on to say, and they both knew he couldn’t argue it. He was supposed to be a father now, and with his upbringing, he couldn’t allow himself to give Ana any less than what he was so generously given as a child. Even if that meant another convenience claim. “And I’m the luckiest man in the world to be loved by you, Brinn Lemieux.” He gently squeezed her hand and ran his thumb over her skin, his gaze lifting to meet hers. “I know you’ll be okay. You’ll be more than okay, because you’ve got everything going for you. I know you’ve been wary of it, but you deserve a happy ending...and you’ll get it, okay?”

“Hey, you.” Mateo leaned in to press a soft kiss to Brinn’s cheek, lingering for a few moments before taking a seat on the porch of his villa. The lingering was mostly a product of knowing what was to come of them, but he allowed himself the closeness for a few prolonged moments if only out of selfishness. “Should we do it quickly?” He glanced up at her with a forced smile in true Mateo fashion, wanting to make this as easier on her as possible.

[PM] Can I come over tonight once you're done with work? I think we should talk about some things.

Dear Master Mateo, Thank you for teaching me how to garden and telling me about the community garden. I love it so much. The zukene (I still don't know how to spell it) are growing so fast and each day I come out there's more and more of them. Anyway thank you. Love, Michael Grey that's my not nickname. This is Baby.

Crocodile. Not a fair match, though. What exactly was it that made you think of this?
Who would win in a fight, an crocodile or a tiger?

[PM] I'm not familiar with the area, but I'm sure we could find a place to talk. Or on the boat somewhere?
PM: Upper deck?

[PM] I thought that maybe if you weren't busy tonight, you and I could go out to discuss things. I think it's best if we talk.
PM: I think that's a perfect idea.

When we celebrate home, we tend to focus on our culture. It just seems as though July 4th is an excuse for getting hammered and setting off fireworks. At least what I’ve witnessed so far.
Wow.
