Evaluation 2 Matthew Lowth 2023-24
Overall, my promotion module has been successful due to the new knowledge and experience I have gained throughout this module and being able to get out of my comfort zone and try out new ways to promote. I was able to go to some exhibitions, not as many as I would have liked and that is something I am excited to continue and get into a nice rhyme of doing, by going on websites, seeing the latest exhibition, and checking times and locations for their openings and making sure to attend. Promotion has helped me plan and have better communication and to work on my timing from doing test sites and attending exhibitions to make me aware of effective ways to connect with many other artists especially on the opening nights as that is mostly when it is at the peak of interest.
For the test site I feel as it went very smoothly, and everyone was able to participate in some way which is always difficult to accomplish but Andy produced a fantastic way to make conversation starters which helped include everyone and had great and puzzling questions that helps spark conversation. Rhianna played a big part in creating the poster which is crucial to help gain an audience and make people aware. We made the round table discussion interactive and made sure to include everyone by first going around the round table and then proceed to talk about our work and what our own thoughts are on our work then followed by the conversation starters in which made the talk continuous and engaging which helped flow into new conversations about other artists and our own work. Some people from other years in CAP were able to attend, which was great, as well as someone after the round table discussion came along wanting to know about our work. Rhianna helped supply stickers in which at the back I wrote my Instagram to where if anyone wanting to know more about my work or to see more artworks from me then this would help bring them in and make my artworks more meaningful to them. This is a wonderful way to help build a following as it is up to them if they want to check out Instagram. I could also put my own website on cards or the back of stickers, and soon I would like to have one highlighting my artworks and some that will be on offer to purchase.
Over the months I have been extremely busy with moving home and getting everything under control, it got to a point where I needed to move due to space and unable to work in a small environment. I am grateful for my new home and slowly but surely getting more organised and I have already seen a massive difference in my workload and most of all the feeling of inspiration it creates. With the degree show around the corner I would like to display business cards at the show and if they depleted, I would make sure to order in advance to restock. I am excited to see how the degree show unfolds and the variety of routes I can take after this show.

Hung up another work from last year in which relates to my current work a lot but using watercolour paper, I still find a lot of joy from this painting and memories come flooding back from the time of when I painted it and the memories within the work, I like the use of the mark making and negative space that works extremely well as if it was fully covered it would look to chaotic and messy.
I placed it behind my hamster cage as that too has a lot of bright and colours paper bedding and the colour of the change that helps complement the painting.

I was drawn to the artist Lisa Alvarado’s work due to the vibrant colours and how you can see the beautiful effects of the colour yellow breaking up and being able to look super close to the work, very inspirational and nice found fabric in which is something I could try as I am always wanting to try new fabrics and new methods of working to see if I find Joy in it

Matthew Lowth Artist Statement 2023-24
Tumblr media
powerful impact it can have.  My main chosen
medium is watercolour due to the softness of the
colours when they blend to help create a tranquil
atmosphere.  My artwork helps to tell a story using
memories from different points in my life but taking
an abstract approach to help make the viewer see
their own perspective on my work.

Matthew Lowth Degree Show Proposal 2023-24
I will be displaying a scene using a bedsheet, pillows, and clothes due to it holding personal belongings to connect more to a viewer and to help tell a story.
I want to have 1.5 x 2 Metres of floor space to place a blow-up double bed- I opted for a blow-up due to the struggles of transporting a double bed. If possible, I would like to place it with a wall to help make the scene look more like reality and help the perspective of a bedroom compared to it being placed in the centre.

Artwork by Rachel -
Degree show letter!! Looks great, it is a simple design by it is easy to understand, I feel this would have looked a lot different if the degree show just consisted of CAP however the simple design I feel is needed due to there be 3 different degree with all different styles and for the letter you don’t want it to favour a specific degree.

Idea for degree show:
I am wanting to create a scene and use a blow up double bed, I want to add other elements and use pillows and maybe even clothes to put in perspective of a home, the vibrant colours would be the main focal point and hopefully would catch many viewers attention and would make the viewer look at the work for awhile to find out what is going on in the artwork. I’m yet to decide if I want the artwork to be interactive or not, as I would like it to have a messy feel to it as the at would give the impression more to a home. Something to think about

At Gran Canaria I went to a lighthouse that included an exhibition so I had to check it out and was cool to see how things were made and the different machinery that was used back then compared to now, one thing that has not changed between now and then is the creativity as that holds so much originality

I have started properly framing my work and for this artwork I drew a triptych of a burning forest in which I was very pleased with and just as pleased today, I ripped into it to creature texture and made many visible mark making to create movement and controlled chaos resembling the fire and destruction of what it can cause

I remember painting this back in HNC, it is always good to reflect in previous work and I was very quite pleased back then but even more now as I can tell I went out of my comfort zone using acrylic and took a more detail approach, I put this up in the hallway as a reminder that even at the start of my journey I had many strengths and good developments throughout HNC

On a trip to Gran Canaria I camp across this house that was SUPER colourful in which was hand painted by the owner of the home which had a cubist approach to the painting, the vibrancy of the walls and colours being so much joy and happiness and shows great character. The artist also uses many cool and warm colours it a way that makes it feel warm and welcoming due to the hues

Since moving I have had to box all my things, which means including my artworks. I have put them all in their own folders all depending on the project and from doing do I have been wanting to display some of my work in my home, so this triptych using acrylic paint on face cloths I thought was quite fitting for the bathroom and wanting to display many more artworks to help keep me inspired

An exhibition help by CAP BA3
They had a task to create using a box, this task from person to person would look far different and was very eye opening to see the amount of imagination needed for each sculpture, I really enjoyed the use of watercolour in some of the artworks as it sits well with me.

Evaluation 1:
Having the opportunity to physically install our work on a test sight gives many significant benefits, being able to plan and organise our work as a team giving insight in arranging exhibitions. Having a physical gallery brings connections and meeting new people in similar environments face to face makes it easier to engage with the work and especially the artist. Emotion and perspective are the two main aspects I strive for in my work which is why it is crucial to have a physical form of my work so viewers can be fully engaged within the artwork. Viewing artwork physically comes with many great benefits such as reducing stress and seeing the artwork from your own viewpoint.
Having connections is key to gain new experience into working with others in a professional gallery setting and being able to see your own work displayed in an exhibition to find out what works and finding positives and negatives to do with the arrangement. With a physical gallery space, you will be fully immersed, and it will easily lead on to the next artists work compared to virtual galleries in which people could lose interest quite quickly. The round table discussion will be great experience into showing and taking control of an exhibition, putting in effective teamwork as well as explaining your own work so the viewers can gain bigger insight into your own work and making it more impactful when an artwork is described as it creates a connection between the artist and the viewers. I feel as it would be beneficial to contain cards to hand out if anyone would like to contact an artist or look at more of their works, so having cards with details leading them to more of the artist's work (mainly Instagram).
On the other hand, it might prove to have some difficulties when installing or de-installing due to trying to find times and dates that best suit everyone to make sure that we can all be there together as a team to help install our work in the event that we come across any struggles and need assistance or input in how to display a certain artwork, making sure everyone is pleased with the site compared to if people came and went at different times making it less organised and more of a chaotic experience.
Promotion has helped to give insight into new innovative ideas from going to new contemporary exhibitions and attending artists talks gaining in depth knowledge into specific artists, I liked understanding who artists were influenced by and finding out artists I know a significant amount and creating connections from who they are influenced by. This is what will help people to connect to what is currently happening in the most recent events. taking all what I learn from promotion and putting all my wisdom into the degree show and helping and giving my own input when needed for others into created an impactful show.
