Trina didn’t know why this was all such a big deal to her. She had no reason to be upset that her ex husband got back together with the man that he’d cheated on her with when they’d been married. There was no reason to be so upset over a thing like that. She had Mendel. What Marvin did was none of her business now, what made him happy or upset, or that he was dating again.

She’d gotten remarried, for God’s sake. She shouldn’t be upset that he was dating somebody. He had every right.

That didn’t mean that it didn’t bug her, though. Because it did. Of course it did! She just couldn’t let it go. And she didn’t know why, didn’t know the rhyme or reason behind it, but she knew that this odd fixation on the lovelife of her ex husband wasn’t going away anytime soon.

Mendel knew it bothered her, she knew that she knew. Of course he did. He listened to his wife, he cared about her concerns and the way that she was feeling and what she was thinking about. That was all very new to Trina. Marvin didn’t always care about her or what she thought or her opinions and she found it very refreshing. Which made this whole stupid fixation on him even more confusing.

It was at some point weeks ago that she’d learned that they were dating again. And it upset her. She didn’t know why, but it did. Maybe it was because they had once been married and marriage was supposed to be a forever thing, and she wasn’t supposed to get divorced, but that was exactly what had happened to her.

Maybe that was why it seemed to upset her so much.

Maybe.

Certain things reminded her of Marvin, which sent her thoughts spiraling, made her feel angry and spiteful and sad.

Which was what was happening now. The radio had been on while she dusted, serving as background noise when that stupid song came on. The one that they’d danced to on their wedding day, the one that he used to sing to her, that he was always humming.

Mendel had been sitting on the couch, reading a book, enjoying the comfortable almost silence that had settled around them. It was when he noticed that she had fallen still and that she was tightly gripping the dust cloth in her hand. “Trina, darling?” He slowly closed his book.

“This was our song.”

“Pardon?”

“Marvin and I, they played it at our wedding. He used to sing it to me. I’ll bet he sings it to Whizzer now.”

He paused for a minute because he wasn’t entirely sure what he was supposed to say to that. “Trina… you know that I love you very, very much, don’t you?” He was given a nod. “Why don’t you come have a seat. You seem stressed, let me rub your shoulders, dearest.” She begrudgingly sat down on the couch beside him.

She let out a soft sigh and let her eyes slip shut. “I don’t know why it bothers me so much. It just does. I mean, I love you, of course I do, I love you a lot. But he was the first person I loved, I guess, and it bothers me that my ex-husband, the man I married and was supposed to be married to for my entire life, is dating a man. Specifically the man that broke up our marriage in the first place.”

Mendel gave a little nod and dropped his hands to wrap his arms around her torso and rest his chin on her shoulder.

“I don’t want to be so.. So.. so… obsessed with them, I just… am.”

“It’s alright, darling. It’s only a natural response to such a thing. I understand.”

She folded her hands over his. “I just… I’m sorry.”

He pressed a kiss to the back of her neck. “Don’t be. Really. I’m just glad that you’re talking to me about it.”

He was given a nod in response.

“I love you, dearest.”

“I love you too, baby.” She said softly in return.

They’d work through this.
