The young shadowhunter couldn’t help but give an awkward smile, not really knowing how you were supposed to act with your brother’s warlock boyfriend, wishing that he’d have been trained with how to deal with your siblings significant others. “I can’t believe he lets you call him Alexander.” Max can’t help but say in amusement, giving a shake of his head, “He hates it when anyone else calls him that.” Chuckling slightly at how often he had heard his brother correcting other’s with his name, “I think he...uh...really likes you.” He said with a shrug, never seeing his brother so happy and comfortable with another being before, “Just uh. Don’t hurt him. He’s not always as tough as he appears.” Max knew that he didn’t have to have this talk with Magnus, knowing that the other knew his brother quite well at this point, probably better than he did. Still he loved Alec and wanted nothing but the best for him. “But also like...thanks for...making him so happy and stuff. I mean yeah...Okay. I’m gonna stop talking now. I’m making things weird.” But this was the first time he’d ever really been alone with Magnus before, “Actually I’m seen as an adult in this country now too. I think I’m eighteen...”

alec pulled back to glare at his little brother. “not a chance, little bro. i’ve inherited all the good looks in this family.” he teased him and nudged his shoulder gently. alec took in the boy’s slightly shorter frame and bit down on his lip. “why don’t you aim for just being taller than jace instead?” he suggested, not wanting to shoot down his dreams completely. alec was useless when max was looking at him with hopeful eyes. alec laughed and max’s question and shot him a sympathetic look. “i know it should really be up to me because i’m the head of the institute, but i’m afraid this time it’s not. i’m pretty sure if i let you go on a mission, even now, izzy would have my head on a stick. or she’d cook for me…i think i’d prefer my head on a stick.” 

The young shadowhunter can’t help but chuckle, giving a shake of his head, “I think you’re forgetting about IZZY. Pretty sure she has all of us Lightwoods smoked.” Crinkling his nose from the nudge before shrugging, “I guess that seems doable. But you’re my blood. We never know...I could totally get hit with a growth spurt like you did and just skyrocket up!” It was no surprise that Max wanted to be just like his older brother, unable to help how much he looked up to his brother, ( literally and figuratively ). “You do realize that the more you guys continue to keep me away from missions, I’m just going to find a more dangerous way to tag along. You might was well just start including me. Keeping me locked up and safe at the Institute isn’t helping me to become the kickass shadowhunter that I’m meant to be. I figured out who Sebastian was WAY before you ‘more experienced’ ones so I deserve some credit. Oh god. Not another one of Izzy’s meals.”

“Ugh. It figures. I mean I finally get older just like I’ve been dreaming and I still have a freaking baby face! And I’m not even that tall! It’s not fair. I mean you should see my brother Alec, he’s a freaking giant. Of course I’m stuck being short!” He complained with a groan before furrowing his brows at her, “So why were you locked up?”

“well, with that baby face you could be just about any age under 25 at least. that’s really not gonna help you out much.” she shook her head, “no, not jail but it felt like it.”

“Yeah, I wish I had more answers but unfortunately...I have no idea what’s going on.” Though his brows furrow as he sits beside his doppelganger, “Can I ask why you’re crying? Or is that sort of rude?”

“that…that doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense but i guess anything is possible here, right?” he sniffled, wiping the back of his hand under his nose and his other wiping at his eyes.

Max can’t help but inwardly curse, knowing that he should have cast a glamour first before healing himself and now a mundane had seen it ALL. Izzy would be disappointed and at this point he should know better. “If I tell you...you can’t tell anyone, alright? I’m not supposed to do this kind of stuff in front of mundanes and you could get me into big trouble.” He warned before letting out a sigh, “I’m able to do this because I’m a shadowhunter. And I’ll answer your other questions as soon as you promise that you’ll keep this a secret between us.”

“We’re shadowhunters. We’re technically never ‘safe’ as long as demons are around. It’s our job to the dangerous things mundanes can’t do.” He attempts to reason, letting out a sigh when she places a hand on his shoulder, “They’re both gone? Valentine and Jonathan? I uh...sort of was ease dropping back at the Institute. I have to find some way to stay in the loop.” Max said with a simple shrug of his shoulders, “So add her to our ongoing list of people we can’t trust? Got it.”

“Yeah, that’d be cool, thanks. I could uh...help you if you’d like?” Max offered, still not quite certain where his brother and Magnus stood. It was pretty hard for him to keep up with everyone and their drama so he wasn’t really sure who was with who. Still he knew how important the warlock was to his brother and maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to spend some quality time with the person his brother loved. “Jonathan just seems to be capable of the impossible which is why I brought it up. Oh god, I hope not. I kind of like being older. Do you think this means my family will respect me more? Stop treating me like a kid?”

It was weird when the person you admired most, your older brother, your hero, looked at you as if you were a stranger, pleading at him with his blue hues just wanting his brother to recognize him. After a moment he can’t help but grin, “I think I may be better looking than you.” He teased with a smirk, always having to hear how good looking his siblings were, Think I’ll ever be as tall as you?” The youngest Lightwood can’t help but ask hopefully, raising his brows. One could only hope. He couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief when Alec hugged him back, clutching onto the other tightly and feeling a little less afraid. Max knew that as long as he had his siblings around, no real harm would ever come to him. “Now that I’m older does that mean you’ll stop treating me like a kid? Do I get to go on missions with you guys?”
