Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1890) grew up in an all female household, dashing his mother's dream of  becoming a minister, instead writing on topics like the death of God. He remained single, wasn't terribly successful & suffered from myriad physical ailments including depression. Ultimately he did exert a profound influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history.  T-shirts, mugs & bags at cafepress.com/madgeniusshop & at 2btshirts on Amazon amzn.to/2qMHahL

Pocahontas was a daughter of an Algonquin chief near the Jamestown settlement. At 12 she helped supply food to the new Americans. Unfortunately relations with the Indians went bad.  But to hoodwink more English into emigrating Captain John Smith kidnapped Pocahontas. She adapted, married John Rolfe and visited England. More British arrived, decimating the Indians. Pocahontas died at 22 in 1617 from European disease. T-shirts, mugs & bags at cafepress.com/madgeniusshop

In 1945 the end of WW2 brought romance and marriage as it did for this Navy Wave and Army hero. Baby-boomers exploded into the U.S. population like an Atomic bomb blast and changed the country forever. t-shirts and gifts at http://www.cafepress.com/fundays

Hamlet has a problem with women. Mom loves him but loves status, too, which is why she marries king Claudius, Hamlet’s dead dad’s murderer. Hamlet grieves chatting with dead dad, the former king, while Hamlet’s girlfriend Ophelia decides he’s nuts and helpfully spies on him for her duplicitous dad Polonius. True love isn’t the theme of this Shakespeare tragedy; better might be "Don't take advice from dysfunctional friends and relatives." In 1962 Liz was the quintessential LA woman. A successful reporter she was married to a handsome,  powerful, politically savvy TV news anchor. The world was at her feet. But of course things didn’t work out as perfectly as it appeared they would. More of my portraits at http://mcgraphics.us/mad

Shakespeare's dark comedy, Measure for Measure has virtuous would-be nun Isabella protecting her virtue against evil interim ruler Lord Angelo who sentenced her brother Claudio to death for having premarital sex with his wife. Angelo abandoned his fiancé after she lost her dowry, and wants Isabella to have sex in exchange for freeing her brother. Meanwhile "The Duke," the real ruler, dressed as a friar is keeping an eye on his domain & on Angelo. Eventually the Duke intervenes, frees Claudio and proposes to Isabella. Shakespeare's Twelfth Night casts twins Viola & Sebastian on an island after a shipwreck. Neither knowing of the other's survival, each becomes involved with local royalty in love & gender mix-ups. But of course in this convoluted Shakespeare comedy all's well that ends well in "What You Will." Et tu, Shakespeare?: Attempted ban over Julius Caesar being staged with political cutouts, this time Trump & crew. The plot revolves around a dire act with disastrous consequences. And as is usually the case with a Shakespearean tragedy, "The fault dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves…" T-shirts on Amazon amzn.to/2qMHahL
