Funny enough, whenever I see this idea I’m reminded of a scene from a movie that also sucked balls, 2012.

If you’re unaware, this movie is a generic disaster film about a world ending climate apocalypse in the titular year of 2012. In it, there’s a bunch of escape ships set up for the important people and stuff to be safe after the world floods.

At one point, one of the people on the ship bemoans all the art and media they were unable to save because some people up top had decided only the absolute best, most beautiful, most culturally significant works would be saved.

Another character remarks that they can’t control everything because they show the first character a book they’d brought along with them just because they were in the middle of reading it and wanted to have it in their luggage. (This book was written by the main character played by John Cusack and in universe was considered pretty mid). They pointed out how that simple human decision meant that this particular book would be preserved even though it wasn’t anything world changing.

Idk why that scene has stuck with me so much.

i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls
