idt there’s enough acknowledgement of just how fucking WEIRD blackwall is. like he’s kind of a meathead, but also a lowkey radical, but also pretty religious and he’s almost madonna complexing a romanced pc but he knows and is a little embarrassed about it. anti-feudal, nominally anti-colonial, does not give a fuck about mages. despite his total apathy re: mage shit, he likes the avvar and doesn't mind that they spend most of their time communing with spirits (who he mistrusts and does not like). hates nobles but cannot express romantic feelings without borrowing the language of fealty to a suzerain, wracked with guilt, wants to die all the time, and somehow has both well-articulated principles and no willpower whatsoever. what a freak. i wanna put him in a terrarium and study him like a bug

ik that cadash is the most popular option for the blackwall romance because of their similar backgrounds, but i think i might like the elf version of the story best of all. my partial reasoning:

the first time you talk to him after completing part of his giant personal fetch quest, you get a dialogue where blackwall throws a ton of flowery declarations of admiration at you. you can tell him you don't want to be worshipped by him for slight approval or that he should stay at your feet for another approval boost (because gordon is a freak). the last dialogue option is the only one that doesn't grant approval, but it's also the one i like best, especially for a lavellan. she can ask him what he would do if the world hated her, and his response is that it would be the two of them against the world.

while he makes that promise to any female herald, i think it has additional implications for lavellan because she's likely to need him to live up to those claims. with a certain set of dialogue choices, lavellan is an unwilling religious figurehead who's been taken captive and forced into the service of the same institution that decimated and displaced her people. even before you discover what happened to ameridan, shartan's fate is fairly common knowledge, and he's the only elf who figures prominently in any interpretation of andrastianism. a fall from favor, a betrayal, death and a complete erasure from human history: based on the in-world historical record, this is how her story is most likely to end. elves who serve the chantry end up dead.

some random, effectively powerless man isn't likely to prevent this outcome, but blackwall is potentially the first character who vows to try. varric isn't thinking beyond preventing an apocalypse. lavellan can exchange assurances with solas, but solas still has to see her in the context of his larger goal. at this stage, cassandra only views lavellan as a tool to close the breach. blackwall is promising his voluntary, unconditional loyalty to someone who is going to need it. based on his location barks and sidequest approval later in the game, he's aware of and sympathetic towards the risks faced by elves in southern thedas, so he knows what she's asking him. he's making a vow to protect her in what is essentially hostile territory.

tl;dr the fact that lavellan is both an elf and a tool of the chantry places her at incredible personal risk. blackwall is the first character to both acknowledge that risk and vow to strive against it. good game good romance i like it
