was thinking of ship dynamics i go coocoo puffs for and i realized this one in particular is just. so SO good. love when a completely bonkers character gets together with a totally normal very average person (actually is Worse)

and it wasn’t ABOUT him doing that! in almost any other movie that scene would have been the grand climax after a tense build where the camera lingers on smoke and then finally he kills the guy and we see him react to that - but in the scheme of the plot and the scene, that guy’s death is an afterthought. smoke’s story is infused with the context he lives in, which includes that kind of racism, but it’s not the main plot of his story and we don’t even give the kkk thugs the dignity of one more minute of screentime or importance than necessary. smoke kills the guy to shut him up because he’s focused on something far more important: the woman he loves, and his baby. the family he built, independent of and without relation to his oppressors. i loved that.

one of my favorite things about sinners is how we see elijah using the gun to kill the grand dragon of the kkk while still maintaining a connection to heaven where he sees and hears annie and their baby girl. the rejection of the idea that killing someone like that white supremacist character would lock the doors of heaven for someone like smoke. no. he still belongs there. absolutely he does.
