I’m forever mad about the state of romance books. It’s ridiculous how bad they are ab 98% of the time, 100% of the time if it’s a straight romance cuz somehow those only ever manage to fall into stereotypes and traditional roles and even when the author tries to go against the grain the characters only ever end up being unlikeable as hell. As for gay romances there’s the occasional good one and it’s amazing and great and then you realise you can’t find another like it because for some reason people don’t really write those! On the other hand there are the fanfics, my one true love if you will, that are literally so good and have amazing romances in them. Like I feel like I understand what falling in love feels like when I read them sort of good and it’s so unfair that I can’t seem to find many books like that. I’d love to come up with a reason for why that is but I’m never really sure why that would be. I feel like you could blame it on several different things but none of the ones I can think of can fully or realistically take the blame for it regardless. I don’t even think I’m particularly picky with it either I just want a likeable character and an intriguing dynamic or plot. Maybe ultimately I’ve just been spoiled by the top tier quality that are fanfics but I hate to think I’m letting some really good romance books slip under my radar somehow just cuz I stop looking or smth. I think about this every time I read a good romance book btw bc every time without fail once I finish it I try to find another good one either similar to it or just good in general and well there are no more somehow

This is coming from another oblivious to romance individual but I cannot stand when I’m reading a fanfic or smth and the character will jump thru hoops to convince themselves their love interest doesn’t like them back and it’s even worse when they have commitment issues themselves so it’s like constant excuses for why they shouldn’t date this person who is literally perfect for them and would treat them so good like broooooo! It infuriates me seriously. I’ll just be calmly reading my little story and this dumbass refuses to just fall in love already! I love a good slow burn but there are limits of what I can take when a character is being ridiculous

Fantastic idea I need itttt

To all tomarry fic writers, can y’all make a story where harry and tom are married, but when the story starts, tom got into a magical accident (maybe someone attacked him idk?), and he lost his memories, but healers are like urm its just a side effect it will come back eventually. And tom and harry goes home, and tom is kinda inlove with his husband, but then he starts to realize their married life sucks cuz its just an arranged marriage, like they sleep in separate bedroom and his husband is lowkey scared of him but still takes care of him so he’s determined to make his husband fall in love with him, and harry is just confused cuz tom whose aloof and cold just started being nice to him???? And harry is like aight it’s just a side effect I’m not gonna fall for it. Also like can we make it that harry’s parents (yes, they’re alive) made the arrangement and Harry kinda just thinks Tom was in it for the money or like the connection or something ( like he charmed Harry’s parents or smthing ) and harry who kinda already had a crush on him since Hogwarts but was never notice cuz he was like a 3rd year or smthing and tom was a dashing popular senior, agreed. And towards the end it can all be revealed that Tom already loves him this whole time (cliche) and like idk?? I just want that angst with good happy ending. I want amnesia tom being flirty, charismatic and so out of character from his usual self to make harry fall for him.

i love a good heartless tom riddle as much as the next guy but give me a tom who takes after his mother. who does obsession better than anyone. who is consumed by it; who has a thirst that can only be slaked by unhinging his jaw and swallowing love whole.

give me a tom who does nothing by halves. who is apathetic toward the world but wants to wear his lover like skin.

(or wear his lover’s skin.)

(or skin someone with his lover.)

tom, who is undone by desire. who wants everything so much, all of the time, because he knows the taste of nothing (the dry rot of wools; the absence of a father’s hand; the clinging stench of poverty)

a tom who is nothing like dumbledore theorized. who wasn’t made incapable of love by amortentia, because amortentia never had any power over love at all.

a tom who’s hamartia is part icarus:

I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.

It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.

We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a billionaire's window every time they think of it.

This Week (x3) in Tomarrymort (22 April – 17 May 2025)

Some lovely fics completed over the last few weeks. Added some thoughts below on why I highly recommend checking them out! 

Splitting this post up into 2 parts because it got so long. Sorry, I know I said I would not let this get to 4 weeks again between posts (or 3.5 weeks in this case...), but I lagged for a bit, and the updates burning a hole in my inbox piled up ���� So on the the one hand, I apologize that it's in 2 parts, but on the other hand, isn't it so amazing what our ship produced in just over 3 weeks? 🤗🥰🤍

Tomarrymort Completed Must Reads 

⭐ you speak of the devil (like he's not your friend) by @amuria (M, 137k, complete)

Harry finds a Horcrux the summer before his sixth year. A deal is struck. (Or, when Harry wakes a seventeen-year-old Tom Riddle from the Gaunt's Ring, it is to a world where his future self has achieved none of their goals except one. Harry is proof that he's a great wizard after all.)

Why you should read it: This is a snappy, fast-paced, and super fun longfic featuring Harry and one of the horcruxes (the Ring horcrux in this case) teaming up to hunt down the other horcruxes. Harry’s snark had me laughing out loud in literally every chapter, and I love fics featuring Tom in Harry’s time. I can definitely see this fic becoming one of the classics of the ship.

Tom Riddle moves to a new building. Harry Potter is his new neighbour. That's it, that's the story. Or: Modern!Au where Tom moves to a new apartment building where he more or less gets himself a boyfriend and a family. Oh, and there's also a cat. OR: A stray cat gets adopted by an entire building. Chaos ensues.

Why you should read it: Humorous modern AU with adorable slice-of-life scenes between Harry and Tom and their adopted cat.

Hogwarts Valley— a cozy life-sim where players rebuild a magical village, befriend quirky townsfolk, and maybe even find true love. You’ve just started getting into the game, and like all hyper fixations, it’s taken you to tumblr dot com—but what’s this? A post catches your eye; you don’t remember a “forest beast” in your play-through… but now that they mention it, one of your favorite characters, Harry Potter, has been acting a little odd. Maybe you can figure out why?

Why you should read it: This is one of the most creative pieces of meta I’ve ever seen in the Tomarry ship. It’s less a traditional fic, per se, and more a social media commentary/collage, comprised of creatively formatted posts about a Hogwarts-meets-Stardew-Valley style game, with a Harrymort love story at its center 🤍 If you’ve ever played Stardew Valley or dreamed about romancing a farmer like Harry, you need to run to read this!

If anyone ever needs two depressing ass soulful as hell fics to cry and obsess over I’d strongly recommend Choices by MesserMoon a Regulus/James fic and Crumbling by regulusblacksdiary a Regulus/Remus fic. Genuinely they were so sad I DNF’d them both bc I couldn’t deal with the angst lol (still left kudos ofc bc I adored them, I’m just scared to finish them lol). They are both extremely well written and the love story in both ships is really beautiful. And ofc the angst is off the charts amazing. Both of these fics feel like they could be cousins to me as they invoke the same sort of feelings but essentially if u liked one then ur guaranteed to like the other fr. As with any fic with Regulus as a focus it’s bound to be absolutely heartbreaking and these would probably have to be some of my favourites along with just lovers (like we were supposed to be) by bizarrestars which is also a Regulus/James fic. This one I did manage to finish and I can confirm it was lovely would definitely recommend

I find it so funny and cute when the trope that Harry just totally picks up the little baby horcrux thing Voldemort made yk in limbo or whatever comes up. It’s such a rare one but I’ve just found another fic that does it. I totally vibe with the rebellion of it. Dumbledores like no Harry u can’t help it and Harry’s like shush and just picks up the horcrux and cradles it looooolll. Honestly what a legend. But seriously tho this might be my fanfic addled mind saying this but what did that horcrux ever do to Harry other than sit there in his forehead like come on surely Harry’s allowed to give it a little hug or whatever lol

Just read a Voldemort/Harry fic that was so good it makes me wanna put my whole life on hold just so I can find 7 more exactly like it and binge read them all lol. It was mostly thru Voldemorts POV which I feel like is so rare and I loved it like he was soooo obsessed with Harry I mean he always is even in canon but bro was yearning so hard. I lowkey really love it when The Voldemort yearns like not Tom riddle who is somewhat redeemable but literally totally evil Voldemort who’s only soft for Harry bc it turns out Harry’s kinda cool when u stop trying to kill him lol. And also there was the drama of Harry having to deal with a world who defo wouldn’t accept what he’s been getting up to with Voldemort and a Voldemort who was totally in denial ab how much sway Harry had on his regime it was just such a good fic. Perfect amount of fluff and angst and drama and character study and honestly a really good ending which warmed my heart. I just really loved how they both grew throughout the fic. They were so so cuteeee

Has anyone else read Soul Eater by Lily Mayne?

To me that entire book sounds like this song except the instrumental version is the one I mean. Like I really love that book, and not to state the obvious but it feels so otherworldly. Which is why this song goes with it imo

I desperately need to reread it and listen to the instrumental of this on repeat
