On March 9th I went on a walking tour of Amsterdam to learn about the history and culture of the city. We learned all about the red light district, the legalization of prostitution, marijuana, religious influences in Amsterdam, environmental consciousness of the Dutch people and more. Our tour guides name was Rob and he was originally from NJ. He had lived in Europe for 12 years and was a pianist. The presentation/tour that he gave us was around 3 hours long. We walked past the Anne Frank House which was also very cool. He talked a lot about Nazi Germany and the devastation they caused in Amsterdam. This, overall was an amazing tour and we were able to learn so much about art and history in those 3 hours. The photo of the people with posters is a protest we saw at the very end of the tour. The people of Amsterdam are very environmentally conscious. I have also previously included this photo in my Process Binder as I think it relates to my project nicely.

The week before spring break I traveled to Copenhagen and Amsterdam. On March 10th we visited the Moco Museum in Amsterdam and got to see works by legendary artists such as Banksy and Warhol. The images above are by Daniel Arsham (Buggs Bunny and Frosted Flakes), Banksy (Snake Eating Mickey Mouse), and Andy Warhol (Dollar Sign). I don't care much at all for Banksy’s work. I feel often as if he is trying too hard to convey certain socioeconomic messages, and his work is extremely repetitive. He often uses the same stencils and styles for multiple pieces. Warhol and Arsham had great exhibits, however. It was amazing to see Warhol pieces up close and personal as I've been learning about him in school for years. Arsham had an art style I haven't seen before, but it is very cool. He used inspiration from his childhood toys, shows, and memories. I really like the decaying and crystal aspects to his work and I thought it seemed really original! I hope in the future I am able to continue to travel and go to places like this around the world.

This past weekend, I went home to see my sister perform in the musical Legally Blonde at my high school. She did amazing. I have seen the movie before, so I had an idea of what to expect. In the second photo, you can see my dog on the bed. He played Bruiser Woods and was a crowd favorite. My sister was Elle Woods. This was her first lead role in high school and she deserved it. She had 11 costume changes in just the first set!  My favorite song was “oh my gosh” and it has been stuck in my head since I saw the show. I would love to go with her to see the show on Broadway. Overall I loved the performance and I hope she continues performing in college.

on Sunday February 10th, I attended an optional crafting session that my sorority held. Here, we were able to decorate and paint a picture frame- we haven't held any events like this in the past. It was something different, and I am always looking for opportunities to craft- specifically paint. Painting on the wood was especially helpful in preparing myself to complete my capstone project. I will need to practice painting on different surfaces and wood is one of them! I hope more events like this are held on UMD campus, and I hope to attend another soon.

2 weeks ago I attended a de-stress event for my floor. The event was hosted by our RA. For 3 hours we were allowed to paint whatever we wanted. I love to paint flowers and fruit. I decided to just do flowers because I want to hang up a floral piece above my bed. The 3 roses were very hard and they took the most time to paint. I will probably go back and add more flowers over winter break, but I want to keep some white space at the bottom for a quote or writing. Overall, this was a very fun event and I will attend others like this in the future.

I attended a short but interesting presentation at the U.S. Botanic Gardens in D.C. this past weekend. They had a volunteer come into the conservatory to explain how the USBG makes efforts to be  green and sustainable in their day to day activities. For example, in the winter train garden they set up, the USBG tries to use sustainable, recyclable, and natural materials to construct their displays. In one of the photos, you can see a replica of the Lincoln memorial. This was made entirely out of green and natural material such as recycled wood, leaves, acorns, and more. The presenter also gave a short demonstration on how to construct one of these small replica buildings in the train garden. I believe this relates to arts through the emphasis the presentation had on sculpture and design. It was overall a very informative presentation. I will definitely return to the USBG in the future so that I can learn even more about different plants through the different presentations and displays they offer.

On November 11th, I went to see a theatre performance at my old high school, Catonsville High. They performed Almost, Maine. This was my first time seeing a high school play; I usually attend musicals. This play had over 5 different short scenes, with each scene starring different main characters. The theme of the play was love. One scene was about divorce, another was about marriage, another was about young love, etc. Each scene ended on a cliffhanger, and the audience never finds out what happens next. I really enjoyed this play, and I will probably attend more like this in the near future.

Over this past weekend, October 27th, my sorority had a weekly meeting. At the end of meeting, we had a group of fraternity brothers come to our chapter house to serenade us. They performed 3 songs in total. Two were Taylor Swift songs and another was the Drake and Josh theme song. They choreographed dance moves to the songs and also had a violinist and guitarist play music in the background. They were surprisingly good, and I hope they are able to come back to perform again.

On September 22nd I went to Mount St. Joseph High School to watch the band play a short performance before and after the football game. My brother is in the band. They played a total of about 5 songs and also performed a few short interjection pieces when the football team would score. It was really cool and was the first time I have ever seen a high school marching band perform. I will definitely make it to some of their other performances.

On September 2nd I went to D.C. with my peer mentor group. We decided to go to the National Portrait Gallery. We were able to find many things here that we could submit for points. My favorite room and section was the civil war section. There was a lot of paintings dedicated to Lincoln and other men of that era. I spent most of the time reading the captions along the wall, learning about the history of America. I have already made plans to go back and explore even more of the artwork.

On Monday May 7th, I attended business pitch and presentations advertised through by my Univ108 course. Six groups pitched to a panel of judges from the Smith School of Business. These groups had been working on their presentations all semester and came up with interesting ideas like an app to help students sub lease their apartments, hydrophobic spray to aid in painting, and a restaurant organization app. The graphics are screenshots from a slideshow one of my friends presented. I was unable to take photos during this event, as it was in a private and professional setting. I would attend this event next semester, and recommend students to attend similar presentations like this across campus.

Last week, on April 12th, my sorority held many arts and craft events to prepare our sister paddles. I was able to go and help others design, paint and create their paddles. It took me a few days to decide what design I wanted to do. I chose tie-dye for my G-Big because thats her favorite pattern. I chose sunflowers for my big because she is from Kansas which is the sunflower state. Both the sunflower and tie-dye paddles took a very long time, but I think it was worth it. I am extremely excited for next years paddle making, and I hope I can help other sisters out with their paddles!

On March 25th, I attended Catonsville High School’s annual talent show. Students of all grade levels have the ability to sign up for this event, which helps in fundraising for the music department. My sister participated, singing and dancing to “Cellblock Tango” from the musical Chicago. This group of girls performed their own choreography including acrobatics, modern jazz, and contemporary style dance. They obtained second place overall. Third place went to two girls who danced hiphop to a K-pop song, and first place went to two boys who sang and played guitar and piano. I will definitely show up next year, as it was an interesting compilation of talent and art forms.

On March 3rd, 2018 I returned to my old high school, Catonsville High, to see their rendition of Grease the musical. I typically go to see the spring musical, but this year my sister received a lead role as Rizzo, so I made sure to make the trip back to see the performance. I have never seen Grease in any form, so I was completely surprised by the story line. I still recognized some of the song tunes, however. My favorite was “There Are Worse Things I Could Do.”  Rizzo was my favorite (obviously), but Knickie was also hilarious and outgoing. Sandy had a great character development throughout the story as she falls in (and out) of love with Danny. Both shows were sold out two days before, a record for the CHS theatre department. This performance was incredible for a high school production, and the students each brought so much talent to the table. I am excited for next year, and I hope its as good as Grease!

on Thursday, February 1st, the UMD theatre in Stamp offered a free movie for students. The movie was Blade Runner 2049. I have never seen any of the other blade runner films, but I decided to give this one a try. I really enjoyed it. It had a perfect mixture of scifi, action, and adventure to it. I don’t want to give much away, but I would highly recommend going to see this movie. I also recommend visiting Hoff theater- it is a great venue and movies are often free!

on Thursday December 7th, 2017, I attended the final performances of my fellow peers in dance 200. Each group had spent about 2 weeks choreographing, picking out music, making a dance theme, and preparing costumes. The ending result was great. In total, four groups presented, each having very different dance styles and story lines. Though this was an invitation event, I highly recommend enrolling in dance 200 or making an effort to see some student choreographed dances!

On December 8th, 2017, I went to the faculty dance concert at the Clarice. Each of the dances shown were very long and intricate. Some of the dancers were students, while others were professors. My favorite dance was of two women; they danced in sync, following each others complex movements. I would probably not attend this concert again, however, because I believe that some of the free events have a lot more variety and talent to offer, Overall, I am content with my experience.
