Material Encountes by Mentsen
Wood is one of the most well cherished resources in human history, and our ancestors knew how to use it and live with it well. And its wide range of patterns and warmth of the texture comfort us and stimulate our sensitivity.
Material Encounters is Mentsen’s exploration of the conversation with materials – wood and paper in this case – and the layers of chance encounters: thinking about the journey of the material which is the intersection of various decision makings by multiple parties on different reasons; pure beauty and emotional value of meetings of different materiality; and what we make with them. Â
Invited by Carl Hansen & Søn, Mentsen produced a series of woodblock prints and mobile sculptures made with the offcuts material from the Carl Hansen & Søn’s production of their iconic pieces, celebrating the material and chance encounters.Â
There are a number of encounters and decision making involved in the timber production process, from cutting down the tree to milling it to a certain dimensions to drying over a year, and then machining to finally becoming a part of a chair, a table or a house. The figure on the surface of a plank is a unique story of a tree, a result of a number of these encounters and decisions made by multiple parties along the way.Â
In furniture production, uniformity and consistency of the materials are key to achieve best results. There’s a great skill in reading the figure and grain of the wood, assessing suitability for the particular purpose. And which inevitably produces pieces that fall below the standard, or sawn off and end up as surplus. Knots, checks, pips, burrs and colour streaks, unique characters in the wrong context become undesirable defects.Â
But the resource deemed unsuitable for one use does not mean waste, and there are other applications that celebrate the unexpected. Or different parts have different uses. We often joke that paper is more wood than MDF. Wood is one of the most well used resources in human history, and our ancestors knew how to use it and live with it well.
On design projects, we actively search for something in material, be it the strength, the size, particular figure, etc. But at the same time, what’s left from this elimination process becomes a new potential idea for making something else. As a studio that works in both designing and making, we found this very interesting.

Snake year greeting from Mentsen.
We had a lot of extra dragon cards from 2024, we decided to use the leftovers and print the snake over them with a home scree printing kit! A joy!

One of the highlight of the 2024 was that we were one of over 100 contributors to The Sori Yanagi Appreciation Society and its founding publication. We’d like to thank the founders Michael Marriott and Duncan Riches, for the invitation and for spreading the love of the design by Sori Yanagi. The publication was beautifully designed by Urs Lehni and published by Rollo press in Switzerland and available from the society website.

Photos of Here and Elsewhere installation by Elliott Denny

Thank you to all our visitors and also our collaborators Eleanor and Elliott, for our first event at our new location in SE7, which was a success and also a lovely experiment! All these photos were taken beautifully by Elliott. Only downside from the weekend was that we didn't manage to take photos before guest arriving, and by the time we took these images, Eleanore had sold out some of her beautiful pieces (unsurprisingly) and they are not in these images!!

Here and Elsewhere A selling exhibition of objects for home
22–23 November 2024Â
On the fourth weekend of November, please join us at the Mentsen’s studio for some drinks, snacks, and good conversations. A new collection of woven pieces by Eleanor Pritchard, ceramic work by Elliott Denny and furniture and small objects in wood by Mentsen will be on display and available for sale.

Initiated loosely by makers whose studios are near to each other in Charlton (SE7), Here and Elsewhere is a small show of their work, as well as an opportunity to invite and introduce makers whose work has a hands-on approach with a great sensitivity to the materiality. The idea is this will be a recurring show, but let us try the first one to see!Â
RSVP for more information on time and trasnportation. Looking forward to welcoming you.Â

The artist and designer, Kathleen Reilly kindly invited us to show our Time for Tea benches in the beautiful exhibition of her journey in designing and making of Oku knives during the London Design Festival. We have updated some structural detail, and made them in oak and sycamore, both keeping their natural live edges of boards.
The show is now over, but you can still buy her knife from her website, and our benches will happily remain in care of the Galleria Objets on Brick Lane for the rest of the year, and available to view. Please message us to make an appointment.

Mentsen participated a group exhibition Proof of Concept from 20th and 22nd September 2024 during the London Design Festival. Organised by three design studios, Atelier Thirty Four, SmithMatthias, and David Irwin, the exhibition featured 10 design studios and offers a captivating glimpse into the design process, illustrating the intricate journey from conception to realisation.
We exhibited Garland shelving, featuring British grown Ash, some with rather wild markings, and very subtle live edges options on the shelving.
