One of the most tragic things about the book that both the show and movie go against, is that after Eleanor’s death, all the other characters continue on with their lives with no mention of her. It feels like a callback to the scene where Eleanor believes Theo and Luke are following and talking about her only to find out they’re not. Dr Montague publishes his book and it fails. Theo returns to her partner and they reconcile. Her sister cares more about the car than she does about Eleanor. Eleanor desperately wanted to be loved and to belong and to have an impact on other lives but when she is unable to have it in life, she seeks for it in death. Yet the novel ends as it begins; whatever walks there walks alone. There is no beauty or satisfaction in her death; it does not allow her belonging or companionship and she does not impact Hill House or its former inhabitants in any meaningful way.

constance's saccharine personality lends to her (false) image of domesticity; it's significant that merricat specifically poisons the sugar, and that supposedly sweet constance never takes any with her food. this sweetness laced with something sinister is true both of the sugar and of constance herself, who reveals a crueler side to herself by the end of the book. the rest of the paper talks about how the blackwood sisters use food as a form of agency and as a "destructive force", which importantly is facilitated by their class. food as agency in shirley jackson's we have always lived in the castle
#shirley jackson#the commentary on class and elite society that undergirds the whole book is so fascinsting#yet so undercovered#the draining of color and vitality from the villagers in comparison to the colorful#saturated world of constance and merricat (i.e. the garden!! where the food is grown!!)#and the fence that seperates them…..#idek im just yapping#whalitc

Bethany I've been a long time fan of yours, and I've tried to ignore your stances on it numerous times but this is THE LAST FUCKING STRAW. I just reread your DNI and noticed the line about cheese. WTF do you mean you like cheese?!?! Don't you know that the milk industry is built on primarily MALE workers FORCIBLY impregnating FEMALE cows and then stealing their milk from the cows daughters!!! Do you think mother nature intended this?!?! It's disgusting! Don't get me wrong, as a former milk eater, I understand the struggle. Milk & milk products are the physical form of the sacred bond between mother & daughter, so of course they taste really good, but until they figure out how to harvest milk from male cows please try to consider vegan or other ethical alternatives, or else I can't keep following your blog. Especially as someone with such a large platform, please try to do better queen. Don't let the patriarchy use you as a platform to sink their claws into so many other beautiful women just because of the pressure that comes from being born in Wisconsin ): I know it's difficult, but I believe in you! Do whats right for your sisters all over the world
I'm sure your mom knows a lot about being a cow
