thinking about Adam Hazbin Hotel and why i love seeing him with crosses and religious imagery in alternate universe fanart

i realized that, often if i see someone who i take as a cruel person wearing religious imagery irl, it makes me even more cautious of them, that them having religion in their mind to support what they're doing can make them more dangerous and feel more justified in what they do

so, if that's the case, why don't i usually get a feeling of "ooh yeah, he's a dangerous guy (in an uncomfortably relatable and realistic way)" when i see fanart of him like that, and instead more often go "hehe, poor guy >:}" (because i enjoy AdamsApple content and usually such fanart -- AdamsApple art where Adam is wearing christian icons -- is about Lucifer harassing Adam lol)? took me a moment of thinking, but i realized it's because, for Adam, his beliefs make him VULNERABLE

i think so often about his canon moments of "right? Sera?" and "but did you see their faces? :D --...sorry."

rather than endlessly using abrahamic/christian beliefs (whatever plot-convenient chimera Hazbin is based on) as excuses for his atrocities, i expect Adam truly believes in what he's doing. and, more importantly, that he would CHANGE what he's doing if someone he respects (e.g. Sera) were to directly tell him what he's doing is wrong. he depends on external authority to hand him his beliefs, but he can acknowledge when he's made a mistake (even if he wouldn't use that wording. Mr "I've never made a mistake" Adam) and even be ashamed of it
