i just remembered i did a school presentation on the eltingville club for my debate class (kinda got them into it actually lol) and we had a debate on if fandom culture as a whole has worsened or improved in the modern day. i think its gotten significantly worse but i would like to hear your opinion on the matter! no rush at all to answer, and have a wonderful day! I think it's worse because the internet allows idiots to post so much anonymous garbage. When I was young a shitty fan had to write a hate letter or show themselves in a comic shop or at a convention. There was a barrier. On the other hand, there were so few women and non-white folks in fandom. So, for all I know, there was excessive shittiness in certain circles, but I didn't see it in my kid/young adult days. I've heard some ugly stories of professionals being racist and have witnessed a telling incident at a con concerning a crossdressing Catwoman (it's alluded to in the Eltingville epilogue). I didn't know a queer fan until I was in my early teens. In many ways fandom has changed for the better, but it's hard to shake off the scumbags. And their louder than ever, or seem louder because they live for this shit. I'll never understand people who grew up on Star Wars, Star Trek, superhero comic books, etc, and completely miss the plot on what they've stood for. Superheroes have been political and anti-fascist since they were created. The Superman comics and radio show pushed back on racism and bigotry, domestic abuse, abuse of workers and the down-and-out...and they're smashing their keyboards about "woke" in 2025. I hope we're able to burn away the cancer f hate that inflicts society in my lifetime. Or at least get it into remission.
