Recap Of Semester!
As much as I tell myself that I was never meant to be a choreographer, I am really glad I got to experience this class and step out of my comfort zone. The feedback I got was very beneficial and I will take it with me outside of this class.
I have realized that I really like to stay in one area of dance (ballet) when creating movement. I am most comfortable doing angular, long movement. I felt that I improved on experimenting with different facing and direction. That was one of my main focus’s when creating my final study.

I experimented with using different levels and shapes. I have tried to stay away from angular shapes and laterals to the floor. I incorporated a couple because they were in my previous shape study. From the feedback I received from my classmates, I played with facing and direction.

I did my final study based off of my space study done in September. I decided to use the beginning of that piece and add on to it. I really enjoyed the rolling of my shoulders in my previous study so I wanted to incorporate that a lot in my final study.
I used the beginning of my space study with some, but few, changes to it. I then proceeded to add on to it.

Composition Structures vs. Choreographic Devices - frameworks or structures - ways of developing chunks of - sequential patterns movement - determine overall structure - original material manipulated of an entire dance piece and amplified - developing and filling out movement movement seeds
Both: - operate independently - do not exist in set order of priority
AB Form
theme and contrasting theme
unity still important ----> some common element
transition between.. - abrupt, sudden A-B - slow, gradual, smooth AAAaaabbbBBB - intertwined, teaser ABABABAB
ABA Form
extension of AB
or ABA ----> shape, space, time, energy

FORMING
Forms Natural Existence - Beginning--Middle--End ------> birth, life, death - Idea of Climax -------> volcano - ABA -------> day, night, day - Theme & Variation ---------> 4 seasons - Unity, Variety, Contrast --------> human race
Form ----> carry the message or be the message ----> grows with snd supports the idea ----> medium, message, format contribute to and complement one another
Forming = Dual Functions 1) process of developing material 2) process of giving it a structure
Translations - between individual movements - between phrases - between major sections of a dance
Sequencing - single movements---> to short & long phrases----> sequences & sections ---> full completed piece - which order gives the smaller units, when jointed together, a unified and total shape as a larger whole

1. percussive--fast--high energy 5. sustained--fast--high energy 2. percussive--fast--low energy 6. sustained--fast--low energy 3. percussive--slow--high energy 7. sustained--slow--high energy 4. percussive--slow--low energy 8. sustained--slow--low energy
We had some time at the end of class to play with the different ways to use those with the gestures that we observed of different people. I used the percussive-fast-high energy and sustained-slow-low energy with the hair behind the shoulder gesture.

Before class we were split up into two groups and were to give feedback to the ones in our group after we “reshowed” our Time study.
Rachael- She kept her title Mystery. She took everything the class had said and made it into something so great. When she uncovered her eyes it was very impactful, and the whole piece itself was a climax in a movie. Her level change were different from the first time she showed it. Her energy changes were amazing and kept us engaged.
Aeva- She kept her title Cringe She used a different walking pattern than the first time she showed and it fit so much better. The piece itself was uncomfortable but in a very pleasant way.
Lauren- Her study was still titled Soul Eater One of the first things I noticed was her balance between crazy and normal. The moment when she stared at the audience from the floor caught all of our attention. The piece itself had a hunting perspective that grabbed all of our attention.
Londyn- She kept her study titled Catch and Release She added a few more moments of stillness that were very captivating and her contrast of slow vs. fast was very interesting. The way she had her foot positioned on the floor caught my eye in a very good way. She changed the facing of her hands whole swiping on the floor and that was a very nice touch.
The feedback I got from my study, Away, was very helpful. I added more level changes and that helped keep the attention of my audience. I needed to add more development behind the feeling of this piece and just give a little more emotion. The hand flick at the top of my relevé was very eye-catching and they wanted more of it.

Energy----> provides the “Go Power” - energy--> potential for force, capacity for action - Active or Passive
- force----> magnitude or intensity of energy exerted - exists on continuum strong <------> gentle
Strong
Positive bold, dominant, powerful, controlling ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Negative inflexible , hard, stubborn
Gentle
Positive soft, pliable, caring, subtle -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Negative weak, submissive, wishy-washy
- dynamics----> interaction of forces with time
- movement qualities----> distinctly observable attributes produced by dynamics and made manifest in movement
At the end of class we had some time to look over our Time study and reflect on some of the feedback we got. We experimented with stillness, amount of energy, could change the order of time, etc.

Here I have posted the second half of my study titled, Away.
Today, the rest of the people that hadn't shown yet went.
Meredith: She titled her piece Barely Breathing - She did a very good job at changing her facing and exploring in the different directions. Her focus really got my attention because wherever she was looking, it made me look in the direction the she was looking.
Sarah T: Her study was called The Ruins - The first thing I noticed in her piece was that the second she started the music from the other room matched up perfectly with her movement. It was very creepy and dark but her piece also gave off that kinda vibe. The reaching moments in her work were very captivating and grabbed the audiences attention.
Ciera: Her piece was called Mixed - I loved her study because she used different styles of dance including, ballet, hip-hop, and some modern looking floor work. She also did an amazing job by changing her direction from side to side. I always enjoy watching her studies because she always gives off a decent amount of attitude. The only thing I recommend for her is maybe exploring with facings because her study was very angular and linear.
Rachael: She titled her piece Mystery - The one thing that caught my eye in her study was the way she articulated her fingers and rolled through them while on the floor. Her work itself was very symmetrical and powerful. The way she focused on her hands was very eye catching.
Aeva: Her piece was titled Cringe - I am one to always look at a dancers feet and legs and that is exactly what stood out the most to me from her study. She was very articulated with her movement and actually made me cringe in a good way!
Sarah Grace: She titled her study Cold Roses - At the beginning of her piece she bloomed like a rose and it was very captivating. Her isolated focus made the audience look in the direction that she was and it caught our attention and kept us engaged.

Because this was a longer piece of work, I have split the video into two parts so that I was able to post it. I titled my study Away.
I was told by my classmates: - my slow accents fit well with the type of movement I was doing in the piece - the side curves were very captivating - I had a good balance between organic and angular movement
Some things that I should look into changing or observing are: - use bigger scale.. low, medium, high - maybe change facing throughout piece - I'm very comfortable with balletic movements, experiment with other movement - think about more curved shapes and not so lengthy and lines
Lauren: She titled her piece Soul Eater - I absolutely loved her piece and the whole thing caught my attention. She had a really good balance of organic and angular movement and even gave it a spooky theme for Halloween. The most eye-catching moment was the beginning because the second she started I knew that her title fit well with her work.
Kayleigh: Titled hers Daydreamer - She had a lot of directional changes and that was what caught my attention the most. She used a lot of organic and circular movement.
Londyn: Her piece was titled Catch and Release - Her titled went with her piece very well and was very fun to watch. As a class, we agreed that it reminded us of cats or The Lion King (: Her movement was very breathy but she could try and explore with her pathway selection.
After showing today, I realized that I need to explore with my level changes and facing a lot more in my future studies. I also need to try and use different movement and try to stay away from where Im most comfortable.

Time
Tempo- the speed of a beat - it can determine OR be determined by response and attitude of dancer - rapid or rushing ---> withdraw in fear or conflict, excited in a frenzy, dazzling with quickness - slow beat ---> weakness, heavy, fatigue, boredom, pondering
Momentum- implicit affinity for energy - if tempo constantly increases/accelerates---> building intensity decreases/decelerates---> slowing, winding down ---> contrasting prudes to high points
Duration - length of movement determined by how long it takes to do (often, kinesthetic necessity determines possible range of duration.) - relationship of movement to beat---> how many beats at a given tempo the movement takes
Clock Time - non-dance---> restrictive, doesn't allow for natural timing or chance occurrences - dance----> freedom within internal structures ----> own kinesthetic timing
Regular/irregular beats - regular---> supportive and comforting OR monotonous and deadening - irregular---> unpredictable, no constant to lean on ---> hard to teach, anticipate, accompany but fun
Accent- emphasis or stress - tend to equate impulse with beginnings
At the end of class we had some extra time to explore with our new assignment.. We had to come up with a short phrase and use them in a 15 second duration, 30 seconds, and 1 minute
