THE PROBLEM WITH SPOON THEORY
To preface, my only knowledge of spoon theory comes from my experiences with my family and by reading the Wikipedia article. From these I would define spoon theory as a metaphorical pseudo-quantification of human labor. When one exhausts their supply of spoons they have no more capacity for performing tasks. After a person's spoons are exhausted they must rest to replenish them. My family regularly fails to maintain their environment and perform the minimum task to keep their lives functional. The house is drenched with cat piss and shit and massive piles of things collect and obstruct walking pathways, often locking them into sedentary lives of lying flat in their beds, eyes fixed to their screens. Laundry frequently goes moldy after staying in the washer for WEEKS.
When I discuss this with them they will always reply that "I don't have enough spoons" Which can be understandable when one is facing long working hours on top of chronic illnesses. However, I have never heard them say that they have spare spoons. The metaphorical nature of a spoon as a quantification of human energy is hard to actually quantify. The only KNOWABLE amount of spoons to them is zero. Spoon theory does not facilitate the possession of spoons or how to acquire more. The result is a feedback effect where necessary tasks to replenishing one's energy are neglected.
I do not mean to dismiss mental health conditions, My sister and I both have been diagnosed with ASD and my mother with ADHD, so please believe me when I say that I understand the complications with neurodivergence. If you do not have clean laundry or are unable to feed yourself, this MUST be fixed else you will not be able to live. My adult sister has been in a self described "spoon-less state" for a decade and has been ratcheting herself into a deeper despair where she thinks her only solution to not having enough clean laundry to go outside is to rot inside instead of just spending literally 2 minutes required to wash laundry.

In this DW mini-documentary on housing in North America they brought an air-bnb digital nomad in front of a 50 year resident who is being displaced for air-bnb units. In their confrontation the displaced woman was incredibly mad (understandably so) but I think that this is a really unproductive approach. It is important to remember that neither of the two residents are the decision makers here. It is conceivable that Mexico City can both have a strong community and grow from people moving in, but the problem here is not being addressed by causing attacks between groups of residents who had no choice. The people making decisions that keep the housing supply low are the developers and complacent government policymakers. I find this an example of addressing privilege without addressing it in a political sense. It ultimately serves as a tool for the bourgeoisie to obfuscate their role.
