Final Animation
I changed up the title sequence, extended the credits on my animation and gave my self some time to make little tweaks to the overall animation. I’m really happy with how the final animation has turned out and I’ve learnt a lot working on this project. I had never used after effects before and had to learn a lot to be able to create this animation. I’m really pleased with how much I was able to pick up and learn within the time frame. For my first after effects animation, I think I did quite a good job and I really enjoyed this project.

Title Developments
This is a version of the title with applause at the start. I don't really like this, it feels like a closing rather than an opening sequence. I think I should remove the applause audio at the start and just let it be silent for the opening sequence and also remove the 'clap' animation from the title. Keeping it simple will make the animation not feel too repetitive and keep it exciting. It'll also help the viewer read and see the title clearly rather than being distracted by the 'clap' animation.
I also need to extend the credits slightly so they are more legible with the clap animations.

Applause Version 2
Version with emojis
I tried out the animation using apple emojis (the clapping emoij and the laugh-cry emoji) in the laughing, 'Ha' section and the applause, 'clap' section. I really love how this looks. I think it makes the animation really fun and adds some playfulness and energy into it. I'm going to keep the emojis as I think it works so well.

Applause Version 1
This is the concept with the finished applause at the end with no emojis. I want to try another version where I add in clapping emojis and laughing emojis to the 'Ha' section.
I'm not sure if I should add applause 'claps' jumping up at the title screen and intro. It would help the animation stay consistent but I think it could make the animation feel too repetitive. I'm going to try a version with applause at the start and see how I like it.

Audio Concept
This is the concept with applause audio at the start and extended at the end. I think this works quite well and blends in well with the current audio. I need to add more 'clap' text animation to the end so the continue for the whole applause. I want to try adding claps at the start but I'm not sure how this will look. Also, I want to try adding clapping emojis to the end and see how it looks.
I got the audio clips from Mixkit and they were free to use.

Title & Credit Developments
I edited the name of the title to be 'Thanks mum...' because I think it suits the theme and tone of the speech well. I wanted to keep to quite simple so I took out the BAFTA illustration, as I felt it didn't really fit, but kept the curtain idea of having the curtains open, as if it's on a real stage. I'm much happier with this title sequence, I think it fits nicely with the rest of the animation.
I wanted to do a simple credit scene as well, that sort of replicated movie credits as Waititi is talking about accepting an award for a movie. I think I could slow down the speed of the credits a bit so they're easier to read, but overall I'm happy with how they look. I closed out the animation with the curtains closing so it would create the effect of curtains closing on a stage again and be cohesive, and also to create a nice loop for the animation. The title and the credits close into a seamless ending and it's hard to tell when the video starts again. I think this works really well.
I want to try adding some applause audio to the start and end of the animation, so at the end the clapping doesn't cut out so abruptly and continues the length of the credits. Applause at the start too, would help fade the start of the audio in better and match the stage, award show theme that goes on throughout the animation.

Title Concept
A potential idea for the title for my animation. I wanted to make it look like the curtains were opening on a stage and tried to add a spotlight effect. I also illustrated a BAFTA trophy to put in but i'm not sure how I like all this together. I think the illustration looks out of place and the spotlight doesn't necessarily suit the rest of the animation. I definitely need to develop this idea more.

Developments
From my feedback I decided to continue developing and refining concept one. I've made most of the changes from my feedback and have worked with Trajano to make my transitions smoother and make the animation look nicer.
I still need to work on the title and the credits for my animation and further refine a lot of the transitions. Trajano gave me feedback on the positioning of some words too make everything read nicer and make sure the viewer isn't having to jump around the screen the whole time.
I'm pretty happy with the way the animation is looking so far and think it's developing in a good direction. There are a couple more transitions that I want to refine and make either slower or run smoother. I also need to finish off the clapping animation at the end and potentially look at adding in some emojis to the 'Ha' and 'clap' sections. I want to add more visual elements to the animation too, like maybe some illustrations but I'm not sure what I want to do there yet.

2 Degrees Ad Inspo
George suggested that I look into 2 Degrees ads and look at how they incorporate emojis into their animation to add a fun feel to it.
youtube
This is one example of their ads. I think the emojis look really cool. It makes the whole ad feel very light-hearted and energetic. I think it would be cool to explore using emojis like this throughout my animation, potentially in the 'Ha' section of the animation and maybe add in some more throughout. This would help make may animation feel more playful and suit the tone Taika Waititi uses in his speech.
Another example of 2 Degrees Ads using emojis.
youtube
I really like this ad, how they replace letters with emojis, could be something that I look at and explore in my own animation.

Feedback
First Concept
The darker backgrounds work well with the coloured text, is very legible
Really like the 'Ha's and could expand on the idea by putting emoji's maybe like in the 2Degrees ads, and also could do a similar thing with the applause
The people shapes do not work in the 'everyone else' section
need to smooth out parts of the animation
Second Concept
Yellow is a bit harder to read on the on the white/cream background
Some of the frames work really well, with having a nice border, negative space and text relationship but a lot of frames don't work like this and are too busy and the text is too big
Some of the text is too tight together and needs to be layed out better to give certain things more room and a better composition
sometimes the tone doesn't fit with how the text is displayed, like having bold and large text when the tone is lighthearted e.g mother being big and bold feels like he is shouting it

Second Animation concept
I wanted to create a simpler animation for this concept so I could focus more on exploring type weights and how that could work in my design.
I wanted to explore keeping the same background and moving the text in and out of frame almost like the camera is moving to different parts of the background to find where the text is written. I think this looks quite cool but I prefer having different background swap in and out, as it feels more developed that way. Although, I really like the minimal feel this gives.
I tried out the typeface Roc Grotesk, and I quite like the way it looks and the range of different weights it has. It gave a lot of opportunity to play around with weights which was fun.
I really liked playing with the source text control and creating animations that look like the text is being deleted and retyped out or swapping around like some type of code. I think this effect looks cool.

First Animation Concept
I mostly followed my first storyboard to create this animation but made some changes for this that I thought would flow better.
I used the typeface Degular Display in this animation to test out how this text would feel and I really love the look of it with the colour palette. It's also a very clear sans-serif and is legible throughout the entire animation. I tried a handwritten font, Professor, to give variation and also help certain words stand out, but I don't think this text works so well. The sound and animation moves too quickly for a harder to read script font. I think I need to stick to easy to read fonts like sans-serifs and slab-serifs. I think it would be cool to explore different font weights instead of just sticking with one.
I'm really happy with how the colour palette works in the animation and think it all works together really well. I'm going to continue using this colour palette.
For my first after effects animation, i'm very happy with how this turned out. There are certain things that could definitely be cleaner but I'm very happy with how this looks so far and the direction it's heading in. I really like the listing idea for when Taika Waititi lists the different thing his mum taught him in terms of the book and reading. I'm also really happy with the laugh's popping up and down in the animation, 'love you for making me read' part, and think this looks quite cool. I'd want to explore this with the clapping at the end of the speech.

Storyboard Ideas
These are some ideas for how to set out my animation and transition through the different sections of text. I want to keep it kind of simple because Taika Waititi talks quite fast so there isn't heaps of room for lots of busy animation. I want to keep it mostly text based with some occasional imagery/illustration.
