can we talk about how fuckin crazy and like. insanely loaded it is for gillion tidestrider, a paladin, chosen one, champion of the undersea and hero of the deep, to look at a rotting, undead chip staring at him with so much pain and pleading in his eyes as he says “really, look at me. i’m not even here anymore.” and firmly say “i don’t believe that. despite what my eyes see, despite what.. despite what my oath says, i don’t believe that.”

guys I honestly haven’t thought about jrwi in a while because I’m a busy guy but THEY WERE IN MY DREAM LAST NIGHT??

like for some reason the jrwi boys hosted a CONCERT and I was there (and Thor was there but that’s unrelated) AND AND I was at the barricade off to the side

and for some reason Mr Slimecicle himself comes up to me and hands me a very mysterious file of paper, which- IS FILLED WITH RIPTIDE LORE???

the gist of it that I remember was Chip is going to die and cannot be saved, Pretzel is going to “guide Gillion home”??? and something about Jay’s family that’s blanking

28 chapters, almost 100k words, Depths of Natarus is beautifully written by the one and only goldpines (read their other fics too!!) and oh my GOD it’s a masterpiece

reading this has made me SOB, melted my heart, filled me with dread, and made me made me cry again. it’s so good.

(calling fnc fans!! this is a whole meal for you holy moly they are SOOO soft and so nicely written in this)

Thinking about how Gillion would compare Chip to the sun.

Thinking about how he’d look at Chip and realise that he was a child of Aster the same way Gillion was of Lunadeyis.

Thinking about how he’d see the freckles across Chip’s cheeks and body, and be convinced, surely at first, that they were his own set of stars. How he’d have it explained that it were marks from rays of sunlight, and realise quickly that it was a gift from the goddess herself. How he’d compare it to his own markings, the blue and orange stripes over his own flesh.

Thinking about how Gillion is so connected to the water, and how he’s helped Chip slowly embraced his fire. The way they reflect and balance each-other, so much like the sun and moon. Gillion would notice too, Chip might try to ignore the thought.

Thinking about the poetry Gillion might’ve read, the sun and the moon’s tragic romance. Maybe he’d see connections between them, relate a little, find a strange sense of power in proving them wrong, in holding Chip and Jay close besides their differences. Maybe he’d worry that destiny would tear them apart too.

Thinking about how Gillion would talk to the moon, to Lunadeyis, recalling stories and telling her about his companions. There’d never be any reply, but he figured it would be lonely where she was, watching from the sky. He hoped it might bring her some comfort, he hoped she was watching.

That’s all I got for now, thinking about my little guys (squeezes them in my hands)

I have absolutely NO evidence to support this other than the fact Grizzly notoriously loves tragic lesbians, BUT

The sun and moon goddesses, Lunadeyis and Aster, were TOTALLY in love, right? it would be the most romantic sapphic tragic story ever of mana

like maybe they had a rough break-up and fought about it or something and that caused the funky shit going on?? 

(I don’t know I haven’t thought this out I just think the sun and moon are/were smooching)

PLUS that’s like a common story of the sun and moon in some cultures/religions, right? I swear I’ve heard tales of it before

YES!!! JAY FERIN HAS COOL DYNAMICS AND CHARACTERS TOO!! Most notably, my favourite being Chip and Jay as you said!! (this will get spoilery sorry)

I love fnc don’t get me wrong, I love the build of their relationship and yada yada (they mean so much to me) but LOOK AT THESE GUYS!!!

It’s no different to fnc, we get to watch their bond change and develop as their characters do!! Watching them go from the awkward banter and lies to just actually opening up and being real with each-other every now and then? CHEF’S KISS

LET’S LOOK AT THE EPISODES #53 VS #81‼️‼️

These two AWESOME fucking scenes contrast eachother in the same beautiful way each of Chip & Gill’s fights did. I need to talk about this NOW!!!

EPISODE #53 - Not Ferin Well (timestamp: 53:46)

The iconic scene, where Jay is commanded to shoot Gill and leave behind her crew but she instead defies her father. It’s obviously a HUGE step in her character development, but we also see something unusual in Chip. This is also pretty much one of the first times they’ve been genuinely honest with each-other.

Jay feels like a burden and a traitor, and Chip fights against that.

Jay: “I was just using you. … It meant nothing to me.”

Chip: “I don’t believe that.” …

Jay: “You don’t mean that.”

Chip: “Of course I do.”

Jay: “You guys don’t deserve this. You don’t deserve to deal with my family because of me.”

I don’t know how much time they spent together before they came across Gill, maybe the time as a crew before The Block was enough, but it’s so clear how well Chip and Jay read each-other from his immediate push back.

Jay lies to his face in an effort to spare him for her problems, but Chip sees through, and he’s clearly not willing to let her go. Maybe he’s sarcastic about it, but Chip knows she cares and he makes it clear he cares just the same. We all know Chip sucks at feelings talk, but in the moment he says completely what he feels.

Even after The Block, this scene changes their relationship so much. Of course, we still have the playful sibling banter, but they communicate much better than they used to!!

EPISODE #81 - All Falls Apart (timestamp: 01:02:08)

Just after the Feywild arc when Gillion is gone, Chip blames himself for all of it, he misses Gillion, he’s putting all this weight on himself and Jay sees that. You know what she does? She looks out for her fucking brother!!!

Jay: “Chip, do you really blame yourself for everything that happened?”

She just asks him about it, and this time Chip doesn’t even try to change the subject or push away. He just let’s it spill and he talks. It takes trust to just let loose like that.

Chip: “Do you remember what you said to me? How you were using me, from the beginning? Well, maybe I was using you too.”

Direct callback to Episode #53 already! (thanks Bizly)

Maybe Chip walked away after their conversation, maybe he wasn’t as ready to talk as he seemed, maybe he denied Jay’s arguments as much as he could, BUT I know Jay’s reassurance would have helped to change Chip’s mind about leaving as Gillion’s talk did.

He’s fucking scared, that’s okay, but Jay understands because she was never ready either.

Jay tries to tell Chip all he’s good for, that he’s enough because fuck she’s been through the same thing and he’s the one who helped her see clearly. Chip feels like he’s letting everyone down, and Jay knows that’s it’s okay. And you know who reminded her of that? Yeah! Chip JustRollWithIt!!!! CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT BABYYY

They’re both sharing similar pains. Their past, who they used to be, what they lost, who they’re supposed to be, who they’re letting down, the promises they broke. (It’s a common Riptide Pirates theme; not being who you’re supposed to be. (i’ll write a whole seperate post about this okay)) They understand each-other.

It’s an interesting contrast between each scene; both in turns try to fight for each-others individuality and self-worth but there’s such a difference in tone and trust. (Maybe someone could word this better?? gods help-)

But seriously, what’s not to love? It’s found family and they LOVE EACH-OTHERR AND THEY CAAAREEE!!!!! Devour it. Think about it more. THINK ABOUT IT NOW!!!

***I also haven’t paid muuuch attention to Jay and Gill’s relationship, but they’re totally girl best-friends okay. They have girls nights, they have late talks, they gossip and they comfort each-other. IT’S REAL!!!

I think we as a fandom can give Jay more love, even if you still are really invested in fnc. I personally think it’s so funny that you can have this dramatic (b)romance heartwarming growth of friendship and trust between Chip and Gil, who started out as nearly thematic opposites of each other, but still absolutely adore Jay Ferin being the one that for some reason is deemed the “most normal” out of the three.

The second you look behind the bastard and the fish and their thematic tension, you have a mad scientist, sharpshooter, combat powerhouse, “the only one that gets bitches,” and she’s still has as many completely heart wrenching moments as the other two.

That and I am a sucker for found family sibling dynamics and you can’t take Chip and Jay as a combo away from me.
