First Menu Tests - Coding
Some of us met up at the University library to work on the application together. During this meeting, Nikolai carried out research into how we could get the marker/label system for the interactive map to work. Michael, Carl and Daniel started to research different functions which we might find useful in developing the application. This would prove to be one of the most frustrating points in the development process. During our research we decided to opt for a different menu design, unfortunately implementing it did not go as planned as the entire application crashed. To implement the new menu, much of the application had to be recorded from scratch.
Tedious as it was, the application was rebuilt, with all the pages from the previous version being recreated. It had a shiny new menu too. However, even this small victory was short-lived. Though the application seemed to be working perfectly, testing it out on Daniel’s iPhone killed our dreams. The entire application layout was distorted, making it impossible to navigate. Words cannot the feels.
By this point, most of the team had gone back home, but Daniel and Carl stayed on for a while longer to carry out research into finding new ways to create the application while ensuring that it would function correctly on both Android and iOS systems. They sent out a message to the rest of the team to inform us of this roadblock and discuss a way forward. Based on their research, our options at the time seemed to be to either continue using PhoneGap and develop the app solely for Android, which would prove difficult as mimicking Daniel’s illustrator designs onto the app was causing major issues. Our other options would be to consider using Xcode, which generates code based on the designs we drop into the program, using swift code instead of HTML. A third option would be to develop the app on two separate platforms. Whichever way you looked at it, it seemed like we had hard times ahead.

Problem
We analysed past events that took place at the same location and noticed one continuous problem, guests who were unfamiliar with activities and locations would often or not wonder round the event lost, missing a lot of interesting aspects which the event had to offer.

Scenario
The ICA Festival app was born from the single idea of bridging the gap between the festival and its attendees. With the advances in technology, smartphone use is rapidly becoming the norm. By creating an app which would include a map, an up to date schedule of festival activities, events, workshops and talks we hope to build a community of active users. The creative platform aims at enhancing brand awareness as well as enticing users to follow the app continuously. The ICA festival app promises to regularly showcase up and coming creatives and host various events not only during the festival but throughout the years to come.

Task 2
Description of Module
Throughout this module, creatives will be able to put forward their skill sets to create, explore, communicate and prototype their ideas to a wider audience. This brief is designed to ease the learning process of the students working on it. Working within a group aims at making sure that different skill sets complement each other, combining ideas in unexpected ways to produce an effective New Media project.
Purpose of the Application
The purpose of this app is to provide an overall user experience for guests and participants alike. The ICA Festival app is your up to date schedule of Festival activities including events, workshops, maps and talks.
The app aims at being the ultimate festival companion, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
This unit will allow a group of Graphic design and interactive media students to work together in creating a fully functional and well-designed application.
Through our combined effort, our aim is to learn from one another through an exchange of skills from both Graphic Design and Interactive Media.
