Reflections on a Year of Reading Colombian Literature
Tittles Read: Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, News of a kidnapping by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
I made Colombia my first choice when picking countries because all my family including me were born there but I only learned so much before coming to America so reading some books could teach me more about it or help me remember a few things I had forgotten about it. During my reading I got to learn more about the criminal side of it and about Pablo Escobar and what he did during the time when drugs were extremely high in Colombia. In all of the 4 books i read they all have a similar geography like some parts they talked about the poor side and how hard it was but then it would also talk about parts of the city in Medellin that are extremely beautiful it talked about the mountains and that brings us to the culture in the book “ News of a kidnapping” had the most accurate kind of culture like it talked about the food a lot and the music like in “ Dark bride” it has a lot to do with clubs at the beginning of the book and the different types of dances etc. Most of the books talked about love and the crime of it.
In “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I learned to not trust everyone. Santiago Nasal was in love with Angela but everything changed when Santiago was accused of dishonoring Angela the day before her wedding with Bayardo San Roman. After Angela was returned back to her family by Bayardo after finding out Angela’s secret, her brothers immediately looked for Santiago to kill him but the issue was the amount of people that knew about it and not a single person warned him about it.
In “News of a Kidnapping” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, it talked about a few things like Pablo Escobar which he was a big thing in Colombia but it also brought light to the kidnappings that were happening in Bogota,Colombia. On august 30th Maruja and Beatriz were both kidnapped and during that time they weren’t allowed to talk with their normal voice they had to whisper and were always being watched but during this time they met a few people and saw them leave and unfortunately announced dead days later. The President promised some things to Pablo so he can release them but the day just kept on changing but finally Beatriz was released on February 9th but kept Maruja much longer and negotiating more Pablo finally released her on May 9th.
Last but not least In “ Love in the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a theme you see a lot in book is love and you see it when Florentino first lays his eyes on Fermina and can’t stop watching her also always goes to the park to watch Fermina and her aunt read under the tree, not only is he watching her Fermino writers her letters in a notebook everyday
As for myself, I learned that I can actually enjoy reading especially when I pick the right book but it has been so long since I read a book so doing this assignment helped me realize how much i did enjoy reading and i wish i would get into it more but i always prioritize other things more than a book. I started my fourth book but didn’t get too far to finishing up so i want to actually finish it even if it’s not due for an assignment.

Summary:
The “ Girl “ who had no name that Todos Los Santos took in to help grow up has now become an adult who finally was giving a name. Onara, that was the new name given to her but now that she has grown up when she was younger she had a fear of this christ looking candle flame that made the creepy faces that terrified her but as time passed she question if that christ was hurt has in his heart but Todos los Santos quickly shut that down. Now that she's older she has become attached to this christ and considers it her friend but she had a little jewelry with a mirror thing that she from time to time would look into it but Todo Los Santos always told her to never look into a mirror because the “ evil creatures” will swallow everything that's being reflected so she stopped looking into them she also stopped paying attention to that christ and alot more things she had to follow.
Critical Analysis:
The theme in this chapters was “coming of age “ which is telling how Onara as a child felt fear towards this christ looking face that would make her creepy faces and and creepy smiling but as she was growing up she became okay with it and actually considered him like a daily thing that she would look at and talk to but in this chapter it tells how she’s now an adult and she now no longer enjoys even looking at it or paying attention so it’s like she’s growing out of this stage. Also now that she's older she feels like she has some kind of control so after Todos Los Santos told her about not looking into the mirror now she has stolen a cigarette and smoked it and the smoke she would do it in front on a mirror and create shapes with it which this is showing how she’s now creating a new thing that she’s older. “she nor anyone else could interpret but that seemed to be foreshadowing the course of the event of her life” she remembered a lot from the live she had before she met Todos Los Santos and La Madrina.
Personal Responce:
I absolutely love this book. The book keeps me intrigued and always wanting to read more which is what I was hoping to have because I was tired of a book starting good then mid way is boring until the last two pages and I love that it doesn't constantly keep on repeating information that we already knew. I know this is cooking to an end but if we finish before I get to finish the book I know I will continue to want to read and see where the book will keep bringing me to and how everyone develops and who else will be joining in future chapters.

Summary :
Sacramento transports people around places in his cart and he was expected to pick someone up but he wasn’t sure on who it was until a female who’s bossy and demanded things. After she demanded him to take her to the best bar in town where she wants to meet the boss of “La catunga” to work for her as a dancer at her Bar but Sacramento quickly told her that only bad women work there but that didn't matter to the mysterious girl but that’s not stopping Sacramento from trying to back this girl down so he keeps on saying she’s too skinny to get the job but she just shuts him down and insists that he brings her to the bar. Eventually Sacramento takes him to the bar where she meets the boss and after Sacramento claims she’s too skinny for the job the boss actually ends up hiring her. Sacramento feels guilty for bringing an innocent girl there but he can’t do anything about it. The mysterious girl’s boss thinks that once she becomes a woman all men will love her and they won’t be able to resist her.
Critical Analysis :
The theme in this chapter is “Love”. This mysterious girl is trying to be loved in some way and she’s seeking that in becoming a “dancer” where she thinks she will be loved by a man but Unrequited love is shown in the chapter where Sacramento is becoming attached to this girl because he doesn’t want her to work at the bar and he begins to feel extremely guilty for bringing her there but even more because he’s trying so hard to get her attention and he wants to show her affection but she’s not seeing any signs of anything “The more I talked the more I got tangle up and the more magical my words seemed.” Sacramento was talking to this girl where he could just talk with her about anything and he was so caught up with the conversation the more he exposed.
Personal Response:
I just started this book so nothing major has happened yet right now the characters are developing and there’s more to learn about especially about this girl who just showed up out of nowhere to look for a job but has not talked about her old life and why she decided to just move and work for this specific person but i'm interested in learning more about them and also i hope i will enjoy this book that even after we’re done with the reading i can continue to finish it up. My last book didn’t entertain me as much but so far this book has actually caught my attention.

Love in the time of cholera
By: Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Pages read: 295- 348
Word count: 319
Summary:
Florentino and Fermina end up coming across each other to what looks like a party with many people watching them. When Floretino sees Fermina he instantly has the urge to pick up the violin and play the song he made for her when they were much younger and this make Fermina cry because it brings her back to the time she felt happy and felt genuinely close to Fermino after a few hours after talking they decide to get wasted and make that day a blur. The day after Fermina wakes up sad knowing the time with Florentino but he had other plans instead. He told her to run away with him and let everyone else judge because as long as they’re together nothing else matters and he didn't want to lose her again.
Personal Response:
As the book came to an end i noticed how the book ended in a good story but also made me question like what is going to happen to them or what do people think about them running off together. In a way i'm glad i finished the book only because at first i found it boring then mid way it was interesting and caught my attention but now towards the end personally i didn't enjoy it as much which made it hard to want to keep reading.
Critical Analysis:
In the book it shows love as a theme because with both characters they both never forgot how much they love each other and despite what people think they just ran off and let people think what they wanted to because it shows that the love they had for each other is much stronger then what they thought it was.” Florentino Ariza had kept his answer ready for fifty three years, seven months, and eleven days and nights.” It took him fifty years, seven months and eleven days and night to finally be with Fermina after so long.
