Attack on Titan Chapter 138 Analysis (manga spoilers ahead)

This chapter is called “A Long Dream”. In a world where time loop exists, there can be a circular set of events where everything gets repeated after certain interval of time. “If you can’t do it, we’re doomed to repeat it all again. The same history. The same mistakes. Again and again. …who knows? Whose memories could these be?” -Eren Kruger The heroes we see in the world of Attack on Titan, get killed again and again, after each time they die, they wake up alive in another lifetime and get killed again in another way. I also wrote on another analysis regarding this matter, about little Falco and Eren, that history was repeated again and again, each time a bit differently. Each time our heroes lived, there may have been some failures in Ymir’s plans, so history must have been repeated, each time a bit differently. One of my thoughts is, that little Falco in another lifetime, may have been in the place of one of the three Warriors (Reiner, Bertolt, Annie) that were sent to Paradis Island and spent 5 years living there, trained to use the ODM gear and fought Titans. So these memories of fighting with swords may have been connected through the paths and reached him in this lifetime. I also remember reading that, Isayama wants to make an ending which gives a feeling that there is no escape, like nothing is going change. Something like a loop? If you notice, when the s4 anime ep1 begins, there is a loop in the first seconds, we see two times the same image of a falcon flying. It seems that history has been repeated again. Maybe Falco actually died the first time and this was his last image, of that falcon flying and then, history was repeated again, he was reborn and the second time he survived, he sees the falcon again and then history continues on, Colt appears and takes him away from the battlefield. Falco later says these words that were not included in the manga: "Who.. are you guys?” his voice had the same tone as Eren’s when he talked in a lower tone, for me Falco almost sounded like him. “Wait.. huh? Wasn’t I flying around with a sword just now? Like, whoosh! And there were Titans that I–” A similar experience happened to Eren on the first chapter: “Mikasa, when did your hair get so long? I feel that I just had the longest dream.” And the same experience happened to Mikasa as we see on chapter 138, she woke up in another lifetime or she suddenly saw memories of that lifetime that reached her at that moment: “When did I fall asleep? I feel like I just had a long dream.” Mikasa’s headaches must have been something like a Deja vu, which means “already seen”, from another lifetime. Some of her memories from another life, probably sparked a connection that reached her in the current lifetime that she lives in. Deja vu feels like a signal that sparks our memory. It gives us a strong sensation that an event or an experience is currently being experienced, although, this experience, may have actually happened in the past, or maybe not, it just feels familiar. Experiences of places that we have already been, of people we already talked with, acts that have already been done, but we have yet to experience. It feels that something is complete and yet at the same time, it is not yet completed but we have a sensation that we know how it was completed. To me, it seems that Mikasa and Eren were made for each other, but no matter the many reincarnations and timeline, Eren’s death could not be avoided and it seems that Mikasa was the one who would give him salvation. So having these in mind, let me take you to another matter and think about the bond between Eren and Mikasa in a similar yet different meaning. This bond reminds me of what Plato said in the Symposium, regarding the Greek mythology: “According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.” In Greek mythology, there were three Human genders: The Man, Woman and the Androgynous”.  Androgynous Ανδρόγυνο means man-woman in Greek.  (Andras Άνδρας – Man, Gynaika Γυναίκα - Woman) So before we continue reading the following texts, let’s think of Ymir the Founder as a “God” of this mythology and Eren-Mikasa as an “Androgynous”. In Greek mythology, it is said that Humans had great strength at the time and threatened to conquer the Gods. The Gods thought of destroying the Humans but if the Humans were destroyed, there wouldn’t be any more tributes to the Gods. (Human tributes kept the Gods alive.) So Zeus decided to split the Androgynous in half and punished them. By doing so, the Gods also would double the population of Humans and by doing that, they would also be doubling the tributes that had to be made to them by Humans. And so they did and the Human Androgynous were split in two. Doesn’t this remind you of the Subjects of Ymir and of what King Fritz said to his daughters before he died? He said to keep the blood of Ymir alive, that the Eldians must multiply, so his Titans will reign forever. Ymir – The God Eldians – The Humans, that had to offer tributes (multiply) to the Gods so they won’t die. It feels like Zeke’s euthanasia plan makes sense when you think about it like this right? If no more Eldians exist, there will be no more “tributes” people to keep the blood of Ymir (the God) alive. (I also wrote a theory regarding Zeke’s plan, on the theory link I left above.) So what does Eren and Mikasa have to do with the Androgynous? Let me explain you: Once the Androgynous was split and punished, they were forever in search, no matter the lifetime, no matter the many reincarnations in this world, they longed for their soul and physical other half. According to the myth, when these two halves find each other, there will be a silent understanding of one another, they will feel joined and exist with each other in unison and will know no greater joy than that. And this reminds of the last panels, when Mikasa found Eren and the moment she saw him, she smiled. And then Eren opened his eyes and saw her, seems like he felt relief. It felt like that silent understanding of one another, it felt like they were once again complete, like the Androgynous, that longed for each other in each lifetime they existed, and each, longed to find their other half. Mikasa and Eren always belonged to each other and in a world where time loop exists, their bond feels like an affective resonance..

Isayama Hajime and Kodansha have confirmed to Comic Natalie that the May issue of Bessatsu Shonen (Published April 9th, 2021) will contain the final chapter of the SnK series! This would also make tankobon volume 34 the final volume of SnK, with 139 chapters total serialized.

Eren is a Crying Child

Ymir in this chapter serves as a parallel for not only both Historia and Mikasa, but also Eren as well. The reason Eren personally reaches out to Ymir so deeply is not because Eren is Ymir’s savior, but because Eren is Ymir. When Ymir stops hiding her eyes and expression and reveals her true face, it’s important to see her for what she is: a crying child. 

Which is what the framing of this chapter establishes, that Eren is not a great liberator. He’s not a badass. He’s someone deeply traumatized. His want to destroy the world isn’t about idelogy, he’s lashing out. Eren’s not being strong to become the hero who saves the world, he’s using the idea of his strength to deny his grief and any vulnerable emotion he can show because he thinks that he is not allowed to be weak. Eren tells Ymir that she is a human because those are the words that he most wants to hear. I’ll explain more under the cut.

Mikasa Ackerman, needless to say an Ackerman who worked in the military now after Eldia's justice, served and protected Queen Historia and the newly coronated king, Mikasa's host and also the man Mikasa loved her life, King Eren Yeager. Though not by blood but by virtue, Eren is indeed the rightful king cherished by the entire Empire of Eldia.

Eren was a changed man. He was happy after completing his deeds and bringing justice to Eldia but there was a shadow of angst and frustration that he never showed. Somehow Mikasa could read that, she lived with Eren since they were nine years old . But her lips were shut. She was in no position to give opinion or ask. she was a soldier, a war machine who was kept solely for her Ackerman blood and skills. A top notch fighter who's worth thousands of soldiers. Mikasa was an asset to the kingdom and was the commander of the military who took active role in, obviously, commanding and fighting alongside her comrades. She was happy because she still is protecting Eren. What's the need of military in this era of peace? Eldia was still vulnerable. Even today some nations fear them and some small occasional war breaks now and then but they are easily taken care of. Although superficially big nations are supportive of Eldia but deep down they are jealous of their righteousness and self worth. The Eldians were noble not only by power or blood but also as human beings. Jealousy is human nature.

For this purpose, there were some inbreeding amongst Ackermans to give birth to more Ackerman children but it wasn't forced breeding. It was very modest through marriage. Although not everyone was okay with it. The tragedy ran through the Ackerman tree. It was never ending.

It was in the middle of one such battle against the Ehldren empire that the Eldians couldn't afford many soldiers and the pressure fell on Mikasa. She strategically planned the positions but knew for a fact that they'd lose if not provided with more soldiers. She was also aware of the fact that more soldier isn't something that they can afford right now. She met Eren directly while he addressed how she had to work with the specified number of soldiers. Eren was angry, very angry. He sounded impatient and told Mikasa desperately to become more skillful if needed. Ackerman, it seemed like a curse to her now. She too was weak for Eren. " Damn me!" , she cussed between her teeth..

Naturally the battle wasn't going anywhere good. The Eldians were losing badly. Mikasa was called immediately and demanded an explanation. She hurried to Capital Mitras .

Eren was in his room attended by some butlers.

Mikasa entered, all battered up and injured from the battle.

"Eren, I'm sorry.. we cannot proceed without more soldiers", she sounded desperate also angry at Eren.

Eren looked outside the window and smirked.

" I already know about the loss, tell me Mikasa, you took on thousands of soldiers and titans before, why is it that you can't take these humans?", Eren slapped back, that crooked smile disappeared and a frown appeared on his forehead. " You're weak!" , he shouted .

"I know we cannot afford more soldiers now, but there's only so much we can do," , Mikasa told him with a heavy heart. Why was Eren being this rude, she asked herself, it wasn't the war. To Mikasa, Eren looked every bit disappointed as soon as he was coronated and Mikasa was sent to the military. The answer appeared obvious but Mikasa was too modest and couldn't make herself accept the truth. It was a vague and null truth to her.

" What can you do now...", Eren looked back at the window, "Your focus is lost, your hatred was biased back then because of your Ackerman instinct that desperately wanted to save me!", Eren snapped . Mikasa's bloodshot eyes got teary, he didn't have to play with her emotions again, to bring that up again. "You Ackermans are useless in the real battle", Eren lied.

The truth was, he wanted Mikasa, always. At this moment, he was desperate. He wanted Mikasa bad.

Seeing Mikasa weakly looking at him with tears in her eyes made Eren's stomach twitch.

"Eren..why do you...", she stopped there.

Eren was desperate now. The mere thought of not being able to be with Mikasa anymore shattered him. He was angry at that and didn't give a tad bit of importance to anything anymore. Only Mikasa ruled his mind. That pure desire and love drove Eren to madness so much so that he started to lust for Mikasa. Eren always thought of Mikasa while doing himself and could never get her out of his head. This drove him to tears of pain.

" How do you wish to pay for all those loss?" , Eren asked. He could feel his throat turning heavy because he was torn between the thoughts of not wanting to do and his body's needs at that time. It was Mikasa. He loves her and wants her. How dare he cannot? He knew he was going to commit a crime that could leave Mikasa scarred for life but he was angry, at both himself and Mikasa.

" To pay...?", Mikasa asked astonished.

" What can I do , Eren?"

Eren motioned towards the butlers in the room. They grabbed Mikasa, the sight tore him apart. Eren frowned angrily, " tie her up ! "

Mikasa was motionless for a moment but immediately fought back desperately, "what are you doing Eren?!", she asked frantically. She tried to release herself from the butlers but in vain because they held her hands tightly and it was impossible for a war stressed Mikasa at that time. Moreover the situation itself baffled her.

Eren then told the butlers to leave and lock the door. He walked towards Mikasa and ties a cloth around her mouth to keep it shut.

He started to strip her off her clothes as Mikasa struggled to release herself. She kicked her legs and tried to free her hands but couldn't.. she cried frantically and tried to shout but the cloth absorbed most of her sound. To Mikasa this was worse than any nightmare she ever had. Is Eren going to rape me? ,she asked herself and desperate to free herself.

After Eren tore her clothes off, he spread her legs to expose her femdom. Mikasa cried desperately in angst but also the mere thought of Eren doing this was what she still couldn't believe. How can Eren ever do something like this?, she thought. As if she could afford the luxury. Her motive was to free herself. Twisted between her emotions and the reality, Mikasa was helpless and almost let go but she kept struggling and tried to shout. Her face was red from all that struggling. The rope tied her hands turned the skin red and lacerated a bit.

Eren looked at her, her eyes were shut and tears rolled down. He took off that cloth and kissed her lips. He could feel her trying to move her lips away but Eren had the upper hand and held her face and kissed her forcefully forcing his tongue inside her mouth and rolled it against her tongue.
