Waking Up
MikeNana Week Day 07: Dreams | Word Count: 1667
The Smith House: Nanaba is at odds with herself, making a decision that breaks Mike’s heart, and her own.
“You’re not yourself tonight.”
Nanaba sighed. Her tea had gone cold, and though she remained fully dressed, and the fire blazed in the hearth, she couldn’t shake the chills that ran through her body.
“I should go.”
Mike Zakarius looked up to the clock with a furrowed brow. “Darling it’s been all of twenty-four minutes.”
She didn’t say anything, sighing again and avoiding his eye, tracing nonsensical shapes on the lace tablecloth.
“Nanaba—“
“It’s too dangerous,” she cut in, “This. you and I. It’s just…too dangerous.”
Mike sat firm in his place, observing her in her nervousness. After just over seven months of appointments that extended upon hours, piling up over multiple days in a row, dangerous had never been something she had considered them before.

The Sensitivities of Recovering
MikeNana Week Day 05: Healing | Word Count: 1532
Destruction-verse: Mike’s bleeding heart lands him and his wife two unexpected tenants, reminding him of how far he’s come—and that he could never have done it alone.
I’ve got a surprise for you. ♥
Nanaba Zakarius tapped her finger against the screen of her phone and sighed. It had been over an hour since her husband had sent her the text signaling his arrival back into their home city of Karanese. The train station wasn’t far, and there wasn’t likely to be any traffic at this time of night so she sighed, and waited.
She wasn’t worried, she was bored. He’d been gone over a week helping his aging father care for his ailing mother. Generally she joined him, but with the summer being a busy time for her herbal shop below the apartment they kept, she had sent him off with some natural remedies and her love, calling every day to check up on the three of them.
In the eight years they’d been married, this was the first time they had been apart for more than twenty-four hours and she felt like a child or a dog, riddled with the restlessness of awaiting his return.

Tokens of Valor
MikeNana Week Day 04: Scars | Word Count: 1996
Almost an Earl: Nanaba lowers her defenses for the first time in her life, and bears her insecurity to the man who loves her.
Nanaba hummed a small tune as the carriage rolled through the city streets, alive with the night. She’d enjoyed the opera as she knew she would have, and when she snuck a glance at the man seated across from her, his mouth placid but his eyes alight, she knew he had too.
“I have a gift for you, my lady,” he said, his words unusually hurried as he reached into the compartment behind the seat cushion, procuring a large, square box.
Nanaba’s brow quirked at this. He was forever bringing her gifts, but his efforts had always been in the form of literature or music, arts to be savored and treasured. Mike Zakarius was not a man of material things, despite his lofty position and she wondered if it were his humble nature, or the fact that Utgard was in disrepair and though he held an esteemed title, the vaults of the Zakarius family were decidedly empty.
She lifted the lid, eyes growing wide at the glittering diamond collar that sat there, cushioned on velvet.
She wanted to be happy, to accept this gift with excitement and joy, but she couldn’t. Instead, her heart sank.

Similar, Not Synonymous
Mikenana Week Day 03: Modern | Word Count: 2124
MerMikeverse: Mike attempts to show off the new addition to his vocabulary, unaware he’s using the word awkwardly, and the ever mysterious Nanaba is decidedly unimpressed with his efforts.
“Aha! Now that’s the mark of a modern man!”
From his place under the dock of where The Utgard made port, Mike listened to the conversations of passersby, trying to pick up any clues or hints as to human life that he may impress the powerful captain under whose flag he now sailed.
Not that she would ever accept it.
He saw cats, creatures he was particularly fond of, especially now that there was a kitten on board, and dogs (he remembered seeing those in the picture books Nanaba had given him during their lessons in reading). The women at this port were a rowdy sort, much different than the collected captain, and far more suggestive in their dress.
There were little ones here as well, but they weren’t like other children he had seen. At the previous port, the wee ones had been laughing, playing or working. These were a far more vicious variety, thieving and beating each other out of the treasures they had wrongfully acquired in the first place.
It’s a pirate’s port, Nanaba had warned him, the only thing you’ll learn from them is how not to behave.
When Mike had pointed out that she herself was a pirate, she had given him her silence, followed by the upturn of her chin that suggested it was not up for discussion. He’d stay out of sight until they were once again on their way.

Homey Touches
MikeNana Week Day 02: Scent | Word Count: 847
Adoptionverse: Nanaba decides their new house needs to feel a bit more like a home.
“No.”
Nanaba Zakarius sighed, setting the hazelnut coffee candle back onto the shelf, trying to ignore the pressing glare from the sales associate of the large chain candle company. The woman had asked them four times if they needed help, and each time Nanaba had responded with a polite ‘no thank you’, but with a decided lack of customers on an early Thursday morning, it was no surprise she’d be pressing for a sale.
“What about this o—“
“No.”
Jaw clenching, she slammed the jar back onto the shelf, earning a decidedly disapproving sniff from the saleswoman before she reach for another. Pecan Pie. He adored pecan pie.
“No.”
“Mike, I haven’t even taken it off the shelf yet.”

In Loco Parentis
MikeNana Week Day 01: Domestic | Word Count: 1660
Warverse: After the bombing at Karanese, Mike and Nanaba return home with nine small children, all orphaned by the destruction, and wonder how their once quiet lives have changed so much in a matter of hours.
Mike Zakarius pursed his lips as he fiddled with the wheel of his wagon, bent to a near unrecognizable state. He felt the soft hand of his wife on his shoulder and glanced up, thankful that her body shaded the bright midday sun.
“Is it beyond repair?”
He sighed, bowing his head. “It is. We’ll be lucky if we make it home.”
Acknowledging the information, she nodded. “I’ll walk then.”
“Nanaba—“
“Any weight we can keep off this cart is a blessing,” she cut in firmly, “besides, there are things far more important than my comfort.”
