to follow up on what the prev anon said, the sheer amount of time that has passed since dick grayson has been robin in the status quo contributes to that. sure, heās still getting appearances as robin to this day, but itās been 40+ years since the last time he was the one and only robin.
due to this, some people donāt really have a feel of what his robin years were actually like. and not in flashbacks runs i mean in the time period of 1940-1980s in which he was robin. people rarely read his golden and silver age days so instead the definitive editions are the flashbacks (batman year three, RYO, B&R:YO, TT:YO etc).
so the common perception of dickās robin years are a the pop culture memory of the golden & silver age, flashback runs, and very importantly adaptations. and since most peopleās first exposure to dickbin comes from adaptations first, they get into comics and then conclude that an adaptation is less representative of dickbin and more of an amalgam of all robins. which is a little incorrect imo. yes, adaptations can pull from other robinsā stories. however, dick had been robin for 40 whole years. when i read through older comics i realize that itās more often the other way around. which makes sense, all robins are inherently homages to the first robin. no shit that they would be based off of him in some way.
itās really interesting. dick graysonās robin era has become something shrouded in mystery because weāre so far removed from it in the status quo. he was robin for so long, and for such a long time ago that we need historical context for the stuff he did. and while i say this, heās robin in two runs that have issues tomorrow: worldās finest and B&R:YO! not to mention the last halloween
current worlds finest is needed for this reason imo. it gives modern readers a feel for what dick grayson robin looked and meant for the status quo. origin stories arenāt wholly representative so stories like WF are more typical.
anyways, all this to say that i canāt believe we can say that being robin is an understated part of dickās/nightwingās characterization to some people
You just reminded me that tomorrow is comic Wednesday, bless.
But no yeah that's why it's always funny to me when the "best Robin" debate inevitably crops back up because I doubt a lot of the people voting have even read Dick's Robin run from the golden and silver age to give a fair comparison. But yeah, so much of the art and lingo of his Robin run is dated, so a lot of people won't pick it up for those reasons. Plus it's just different tonally to a lot of modern comics.
I love it though. I think it's so fun and ridiculous. Also, it's really interesting to analyze the differences in Bruce and Dick's relationship across eras.
I feel like people may not realize the scope of Dick's Robin history unless they go on Comic Vine and see all his appearances. Sometimes I'll even be randomly jumping around in Batman or TEC, and I'm like, damn, we're still in Dick's era lmao.
#he's like top 5 most influential comic characters of all time and people just really don't understand what exactly that means#dc#dick grayson

Jasonās fixation on Dick is an outcome of Bruceās obsession with him, as is Damianās to a lesser extent, but we must remember that Timās developed on its own AND that it precedes Bruceās at least by several minutesāš»
