anyways i reread hanakoi tsurane last night (on the account of having watched kokuho at a theatre last friday) instead of sleeping and/or locking in as i should and i want to say as far as yaoi manga goes... it really is a sort of story that is so earnest and fair in how it deals with conservatism and that particular brand of homophobia so often present in japanese society specifically (but also with homophobia as a whole.) granted i don't really read yaoi manga as a regular pastime (lol) (though i suppose i did read quite a bit of it when i was a middleschooler... so ages ago) and the main reason i picked up this title was because it's about kabuki, but i was surprised at how it depicts queerness... the characters have such a prompt and natural reckoning with their sexuality, but it does not dismiss the patriarchal structures they operate within... &while most of japanese queer media does not get "coming out" plotlines it often seems that characters do not ever think about it at all-- of course, that corresponds with a certain societal standard, but i do appreciate that hanakoi tsurane makes a point of exploring how characters actually navigate that reality and their relationships with people outside of the romance too. and the way it weaves the kabuki plays into the plot... the storyline of sougo and gensuke's grandfathers and their final performance of the love suicides at sonezaki... it is certainly a love letter to kabuki as well

i can't wait until the writers of the show reveal they don't actually like the books because that would not be surprising at all. this is what happened with the witcher after all and still most of the audience needed it spelt out by one of the writers in an Q&A because nowadays everyone has this attitude of acting as if it was your *duty* to support any and all adaptations and agree with any and all creative decisions and if you say that something is bad you're the enemy of the arts (but somehow the people who adapt the work do not need to hold the same respect to the source material?)

seeing negative reactions to the new season of iwtv the show is so funny to me because people were sooo obsessed with it and so allergic to ANY degree of criticism, even the mildest of it, but the reason for which they are not ready for a whole season of lestat-centric narrative is several bad decisions regarding the treatment of the source material that lead to this. the show writers shot themselves in the foot not once not twice but SEVERAL times and it came to the point where so many people just don't like and don't even WANT to like the actual main character of the whole original series. and all i have to say is. lol
