August comes quietly, though the air is thick enough to drink. The laundry stiffens as I hang it, the cloth turning crisp under the sun’s stare. Steam leaves my skin before I can gather a towel around me. The cold drink loses its cold mid-pour, the glass sweating in my hand. At night, the sheets slip to the floor without asking, and my fingers stay sweet with peach juice, sticky with a love that leaves me undone. That’s when I know: August has taken the house, and it won’t let go until it’s ready.
