Some photos I recently took of my friend Nat and their girlfriend for a new series of paintings of love in Prehispanic Mesoamerica. In this case, it will be a painting of a Patlacheh, whom we might consider today to be a trans man or a gender-fluid person (neither word really translates the meaning of patlacheh, which is in fact a third gender), and their lover, a cis-woman. The second image is an illustration of a patlacheh painted shortly after the conquest, in which a person assigned female at birth wears traditonal women's hair, but a man's loincloth and cloak. Our ancestors had a much more broad understanding of gender than has been the case for European culture, with a variety of genders existing throughout the Americas apart from the usual "male" and "female." Some of these still exist, such as the muxe of the Zapotwc tribe. Patlacheh identity is one which today can still be used to describe some queer people in our own community, and which represents a return to the wisdom and knowledge of our forebears. Also, anyone who leaves homophobic or transphobic comments will deleted and blocked. I do not tolerate hate or willful ignorance.
