It was little but a fleeting moment, her eyes seemed to be trained on the metal spoon she had been carelessly moving around in the cup of coffee with the very tip of her index finger. She didn't say a word, her chin resting on her hand as she observed the metal almost mindlessly. Her visage was void of any emotion. To any other person, it would seem like she was deeply contemplating something. But to his trained eye it was painfully obvious.

Complete and utter disinterest.

He wondered, had she even stopped to listen to his mindless rambling, to his so-called business proposal? Then again, he knew she wasn't an easy person to negotiate with from the start. He knew it would be a tough fight to gain her attention, let alone her approval. But even so he had persevered, endured the void stare that seemed to dismiss his existence as a whole.

Was he there? Was he really there in front of her, inside of that one fancy café in town that insisted on playing melodic jazz to accompany the fragrance of freshly ground coffee beans that clung to the building like some cheap perfume that would stubbornly stick to his sheets? Shaking his head, he quickly dismissed the rampant train of thoughts that sprouted from his nervousness.

The sharp clang of metal meeting porcelain snapped his attention back to her, the small spoon now resting on the dish. She shifted her position, no longer crossing her legs in boredom but choosing to sit somewhat straight. One of her hands came up to push through her bangs before she exhaled in a deep sigh. Her right index finger drummed on the cherry wood as she leant back in the black leather seat, eyes finally meeting his. Vibrant scarlet meeting chocolate brown in anxiety-inducing intensity, yet he would never be able to look away. Not even when her soft pink lips pulled into an almost sadistic grin, the glint in her eyes only encouraging the malice that oozed from her very being.

“I'm looking forward to what you can offer, Mr. Attorney.”

After all, he was quite literally playing the devil’s advocate.
