I wonder if Beth has ever felt jealous of Morty because of how much time he spends with Rick.
Like imagine your estranged father finally comes home after 20 years. You don't ask why he was gone. You just accept him back into your life because you're terrified that if you push, he'll abandon you again.
He's pretty distant in the begining. He doesn't like your husband (but you're not that mad; because to be honest, you don't really like your husband). He doesn't talk to your daughter; except to make snarky remarks.
But most importantly, he barely spends time with you. Yeah, he says nice things to you; compliments your food, praises your intelligence; but it's... empty. He never actually spends time one-on-one with you. You hoped that when he came back, you would reconnect. You would have some daddy-daughter bonding time. Take back all those things you lost in your childhood. But he doesn't.
Instead he spends all his time with your son, Morty. And yeah, it's nice that he's connecting with the family. You've always wanted your father to meet your children; be part of your life. But you can't help but feel... bitter. Morty is the one that Rick always wants to spend time with. Rick always makes gadgets for Morty (Like he used to do for you when you were a kid). Morty gets to spend his childhood with Rick there.
And you don't. Instead, here you are, watching your son get to bond with your father in a way that you never got to.

I’m so sick of the pro shippers
WHY is there so much incest in every fandom I step my foot in? Especially the Rick and Morty fandom omg. Like wdym I want to look up cute fan art or Rick and his VERY MUCH UNDERAGE GRANDCHILD, cause yk why not it’s cute? And I get incest stuff (this doesn’t only go for this fandom). And don’t talk about how everyone is free to ship whatever and all of those things… like c’mon. It’s not even just incest one of the 2 is like 14? One thing is for you to be underage and read fan fiction of someone way older, or just an adult. But that’s WAY different from an adult writing fan fiction and fantasizing about an adult and his minor grandchild fucking. Do I think these people should be burned at the stake (or harassed)? No, that’s wrong and technically they haven’t done that stuff irl. HOWEVER we so need to tell them hey, this is not cool please don’t do this tf? Instead of being told ā€œw-w-well… it is wrong but I accept you anywaysā€ NO GET OUT. Idc if it’s fictional it’s still wrong? And it’s a type of wrong very different from someone writing a fan fiction that involves stealing or killing or stuff like that yk? Those are completely different things, stealing is way less harmful and killing is so not as common or doable if yk what I mean plus it’s usually set in a fantasy world like game of thrones where it would make sense or just slasher stuff, not like incest and grooming which is thing much more ā€œdoableā€ yk? Just step foot in the internet and post yourself as a minor and see how many’s pedos will get into your dm’s. A LOT. So yeah no one will read this and it’s very random but whatever.

I can't find the post but the story where a girl asked her boyfriend to talk dirty in Spanish while they were having sex and was really into it until she recognised the word 'tomato' and he admitted he was explaining how to make a sandwich gives me such Rick and Diane vibes

If you're not a fan of RnM OCs, click away, for those who stayed tho:
Tumblr media
Here's my son!
before anything, i can draw way better I'm just stressing about artfight ref sheets so the quality of my art is gradually lowering šŸ’” (if you're on artfight and got rick and morty ocs please give me a follow i need more rnm people to attack, link to my acc right here↓)
Rick B-12 (like the vitamin commonly found in beer😭) or uh, Punk!Rick, is an OC I've had since 2023? I mean i call him punk rick but honestly the fact that he's punk has nothing to do with..... anything? he just kinda looks cool, i guess it's the same way C-137 is obsessed with television? and pop culture ? but it doesn't impact the plot whatsoever? he's like that but with punk music (i also thought it'd be really funny if his favourite band was "the addicts" 😭😭😭😭😭😭)
I already once tried to sum the lore up and i ended up writing a whole essay so this is my second attempt, i could write the whole thing if someone asked. I don't think anybody is interested enough tho.
in short: young rick gets mad at diane and steals little baby beth, while he's being petty diane blows up, when rick cools down he comes back home just to get traumatized by a bunch of cops and a blown up garage. To compensate he becomes a helicopter parent to beth, so obviously the moment she turns 18 she moves out and gets together with jerry. Rick realizes he has free time for the first time in 15 years so he actually starts adventuring like, in his 50s. When he meets unity he fumbles so hard he starts having a mental breakdown as they're about to go down, so unity is nice to him out of pity. When he meets BP he gets beat up by him for teasing him about losing blood ridge, and then falls in love. Rick realizes his love is very one sided, so he decides he's done with stumbling around the multiverse like an idiot and basically begs beth to let him move in,(cause the house he originally had has been empty for so long he lost ownership or something idk, he's basically homeless) just to realise him and the family have literally nothing in common and he doesn't connect with a single one of them (actually he connects with summer, but that happens later and i honestly dont know how) so he keeps adventuring on his own, except he's just drowning in self pity, until the little alien you can see on the right sneaks into his spaceship, and that just becomes his pet "dog" (he tries to convince the smiths that it's not an alien and that its just a regular dog, i think there'd be a whole bit about jerry not wanting aliens in the house) and he calls it "buddy" cause rick canonically cant name shit and I didn't want the dog to be called aids or something.
oh and obviously the classic rick alcoholic thing is canon here i just failed to mention it in a meaningful way
Ok thats basically it! i suck at summarizing, sorry if this was painful to read.

Everyone's talking about how Rick must have gotten so attached to Karen and Doug because his relationship with his own parents was bad, but I haven't seen the other possibility brought up, so I'll do it: Maybe his relationship with his parents was fine, and he just misses them. Maybe Karen and Doug even reminded him of them.
I mean, think about it. As this season, and this episode in particular, are driving home, Rick is OLD. Whether his relationship with his mom and dad was good, terrible, or somewhere in the middle, they've probably been gone a long time. If they were on at least decent terms, it makes sense that he misses them. And if that's the case, being so loved as Jimmy probably brought back a lot of memories.
Don't get me wrong - we've all known Rick has daddy issues since season 2. BTW, airing Autoerotic Assimilation right after the new ep? āœØļøChef's kissāœØļø. Good job, Adult Swim. Anyway, I know it's a popular headcanon, but I'm just... not a fan of the idea that Rick’s parents were neglectful or outright abusive. His father didn't need to be a monster for Rick to have daddy issues.
I prefer to think, at worst, they weren't super supportive of his interest in science, mostly because they didn't understand it. IIRC, his dad looked like some kind of businessman in that one photo - maybe he wanted Rick to follow in his footsteps instead of pursuing science? I can definitely see that both coming from good intentions and causing friction between father & son.
We know nothing of Rick’s childhood other than what his bedroom looked like, that he's always had the same blue hair, & that his interest in science started young. All possibilities of what it was like are equally valid. I just like to think that, before everything ELSE that happened in Rick’s life, he was at least mostly happy as a kid.

Rick and Morty kinda notorious for on-the fly writing that tries to make the viewer feel like it had a coherent idea to beginning to end like most/alot of shows do to keep things consistent and coherent but in itself causes consistencies in the narrative.
Like sometimes Rick (referring to all of them here as a collective group, not just the one the story follows individually) is treated like a God by the story itself, or actually he's just some dick like the rest of us who happens to be smart enough to cause big damage and gets an undeserved ego for it, actually he's an unstoppable force, actuactually his ego is vaild, actually he's- so on.
And yaknow what, fan content creativity scope wize that's really fun. Analysis from multiple angles wize that's really fun. Writing quality from the cannon source material wize it's awful but it's like a flaw in something you can critique and still find something to do with it.
Like in the episode with all the Morty clones it doesn't really ask the viewer to think about Ricks' treatment Mortys' much deeper than what's already been established multiple times. "They're Rick and Morty!!! but Rick is bad to Morty :( so when you have alot of Ricks and Mortys it gets even worse!! Rick and Mortyyy!!" Because sometimes "Rick" is just this unstoppable force and Morty is just this cosmicly destined sidekick but also Rick is sometimes a God and he made that destiny for him by hand.
Like sometimes the writers and Rick himself place him too highly and it takes something away from his character. That he's a victim of himself, as a force of nature is, and that's not the same as being the cause somehow. Dissolving him partially of this accountability. This is half pointed out in one of evil Morty's speeches.
I actually think alot of Ricks aren't that smart but cling onto the reputation of themselves as a collective so they can all take credit for all of the few's best traits. Utilizing Clones/Multiverse Ricks constantly as enemies and gags leaves them frequently reduced to easily defeated jokes. They'll be on screen literally dying in mass easily preventable deaths. All while each individually having basically the same sized ego.
And the show's almost separation from Morty as his grandson and not his sidekick/partner in arms. Like this guy didn't just span across dimensions clinging onto better versions of himself in any facet he could find it and drag a version of a hypothetical grandson or his literal blood grandson he watched be born and visited and everything he could be to him inbetween into his mess to use and mistreat.
Like the individual Rick the story follows is one off the better ones, it's more complicated. But the Ricks collectively get framed sometimes almost like this artificial species. Like a race of aliens who are wrong for oppressing the Morty's but think there's a natural pecking order at play.
When they're not. That's a human man who grew up on earth and sits on, stabs, enslaves, tortures, another human child who either is or resembles the idea of his grandson. And we're supposed to believe this is unfathomably smart man too but once you put the human element back into his character and his dynamic with Morty it's suddenly much more disturbing than just sci-fi made up alien genocide it paints a picture of an abuser who just wide spanned his abuse to such a ridiculous size it didn't look recognizable anymore.
And I think the difference in how Ricks and Mortys tend to name themselves is so important. It's nearly always [Adjective Rick.] But Morties are often just [Adjective] or [Morty] interchangeably amongst themselves. With Ricks it's like, an ego thing. Being a Rick makes me the smartest man I have to identify with that!! It's a title!! But I can't just be like all the other smartest mans around me I need to stick out somehow!!
But Morty's (when in their own groups father away from Ricks' control) seem much more aware they're all just the same guy, but they're different /people./ That the Ricks don't even respect them as that much, so they find a deeper appreciation for their own humanity they're being denied. They huddle together as like a society of children ripped away from their homes by their abusive grandfather, finding safety with each other understanding they all have the same trauma and experiences and quirks and looks and baaasically being the same guy!! But through their personhood they have differences they appreciate and boost with each other.
So with frequently wish-washy and changing narrative direction all the time and a show that never even knows what it's trying to say about nihilism or not it instead gets painted as !!!!!!!!!!!! """Clone Mortys should live on remote planets by themselves bc making silly little Morty towns is immature you guys :3""""
OH FUUUCKK OFFFFFFF 😭

okay tumblr will NOT let me respond to this normally for some fucking reason so i had to screenshot it lmfao, my response is down belowwww
no i totally agree with you and i love that this is such an integral part of rick’s character. he’s such a contradiction of himself and i think that truly frustrates him. he’s loyal to an absolute T, even if it kills him. to diane and to birdperson, both people he let in and both people who have ā€œpaid the priceā€ so to say- of loving him. the world has shown him nothing but the negative consequences of opening himself up to acceptance. he’s nothing if not loyal and he punishes himself for that all the time, even though thats part of what is irrevocably true about him
