Recap Dandadan 2x05
It's about time I caught up on the recaps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a lot going on in the background in this episode that I find almost as interesting as the first one. Aira's relationship with Chiquitita is one of Dandadan's most tender relationships. It may seem like Aira only behaves this way with him because she finds him adorable. But the truth is, Aira knows better than anyone what it means to grow up without a mother. Her maternal instinct kicks in whenever this character is around, and that adds another layer of depth to the character. She doesn't just cuddle and care for him; there are countless panels of Aira feeding Chiquitita or otherwise caring for him that reinforce this idea.
Tumblr media
Reference to Ranma ½. Jiji is an otaku. I don't think there's a single opening that he doesn't know xD As for the hot and cold water thing, I have a theory about all this that I'll leave you [here], but generally speaking, I think Evil Eye is terrified of hot water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I enjoy Dandadan more when it goes into romance and slice-of-life than when it's in full shonen mode. I'm not saying its powers and fights aren't great, but every second of Momokarun gives me years of life. Seeing how Momo wants to get closer to Okarun without having to talk about her feelings openly and how not being clear with him is making Okarun confused about their relationship… My poor baby is too insecure to even think of that as a statement, Momo!
Tumblr media
Jiji's parents are so adorable, silly and short… xDD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terrifying. That's all I can say. This part of the story is much more stomach-turning in the anime than in the manga. Dandadan can move from comedy to romance to horror in a matter of seconds.
Tumblr media
Muko the biggest shipper of the Momokarun.
Tumblr media
Okarun giving Aira's classmates the dirty look. You'd think he was the biggest victim of bullying here. lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aira is so upset about being excluded from the trip to Jiji's house, so while she plays it cool at this point, she's also grateful to be invited. She's in a pretty difficult place with her friends right now, and knowing that she has people who care about her and value her is very important to her. While she always takes her character a step further, almost all of Aira's visceral reactions are pure pride and insecurity. I know many of you are still deciding whether you like or dislike her, but that's just how Aira is, an emotional journey, and that's what makes it so interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 1x08
I've read a lot of criticism about the "hyperrealistic" food. I'm not a big fan of this, but it's not the first time Dandadan has done something like this. For me, the difference lies in the fact that it's very poorly integrated into the animation. There's no justification for there being a single hyperrealistic element here, while in the mantis shrimp episode it took up a whole screen, which gave it a "specific purpose and location." I don't mean to say that I think it's horrible; it's part of the show's crazy humor, but they could have polished the idea a bit more.

Evil Eye's Biggest Fear
Tumblr media
Episode 2x05.
Why can Jiji take control of his body with hot water? Is there any logic behind this seemingly random rule? It's obvious that Dandadan references other successful manga and anime, and since Jiji himself sings the Ranma opening, we can imagine he's just making a small nod to the series… But what if I told you that Evil Eye might be terrified of hot water, what would you say?
Tumblr media
Episode 2x04.
As Momo so aptly explains, "The rainbow-like dragon" is a geyser; a jet of hot water that signaled that the volcano had erupted. But for Evil, it also marks the end of his human life. His entire existence inside the cell was waiting for that very moment.
Tumblr media
Episode 2x02.
Unlike the members of Jiji's household, who were devoured by the Mongolian worm, poor Evil was burned as an offering to the geyser. How likely is it that Evil would lose control of Jiji's body out of mere fear? Well, I think it makes perfect sense that the yokai's greatest fear is what defined his life and death: A simple stream of water.

Recap Dandadan 2x04
I'm behind on the recaps, but I've been very sick these last few days and didn't have the energy to do them. Anyway, I'll try to get them out as close to each other as possible so I don't have to pile up more episodes. Especially since there are a couple of posts about trivia and theories that I'm really looking forward to.
Tumblr media
The moral of this arc is Manjiro's words: "Fear clouds people's ability to think, and they can even consider human sacrifice." We've been introduced to another sad story about another yokai we can empathize with. We've also been introduced to two new types of cryptids: the Mongolian worm and the subterraneans. And how they misinterpreted the urban legends of the area, and the two stories became connected. I think the geyser theme was very important to explain, given that the Kito family only took advantage of the situation to raise their giant monster. And in the process, they've reminded us that yes, they are enemies who will return at some point in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When someone says Momo's powers are rubbish, I hope they remember the time she lifted the Mongolian worm over her head and used it as a fire hose.
Tumblr media
Epic First Appearance: Manjiro… Well, this will be repeated in future stories. There isn't a single supporting character from Dandadan who appears for nothing or doesn't have a role in the story. Heed my words, because in the Danmara arc, this is taken to a whole new level.
Tumblr media
Hello? When did he wake up? I need some context. A little nap, and after getting beaten up, Okarun decides to go all-out against Evil. When I say Okarun can't logically beat Evil, it's because of things like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't remember this from the manga, or it's just an add-on, I don't know. But it's good to remember that Momo's powers have limitations and can be slowed down, and that she senses pain and touch through her spirit hands.
Tumblr media
Second epic entry: Penny Wise. With Chiquitita's soundtrack in the background xDD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 47.
Third and final epic entry: Seiko riding Taro. I've been wanting to see this animated; this is one of the most famous and detailed panels in the manga.
Tumblr media
Evil Eye's confused face. It's top-tier comedy. The poor evil doesn't even know what a UFO is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seiko doesn't appear in many fights, but when she does, it's very satisfying because her fighting style revolves around strategy. Using Taro isn't random; she has resources and knows how to use them. She demonstrated this with the turbo and demonstrates it here, and if you stop to think about it, they're always barrier amulets used in one way or another, but they always achieve good results. By the way, they've paid off the rights to William Tell.
Tumblr media
What makes Momo the great hero she is is that she doesn't even stop to think selfishly until she's saved the village. The same thing happened in the fight against Nessie: She had the opportunity to ditch Aira after she had interfered in their relationship, and yet saving her was always her priority. She solves things first and takes care of her personal matters later. She doesn't waste her time questioning things or suffering because that would only mean delaying her going to save Okarun a little longer, which is what truly matters to her.
Tumblr media
This burst of images is very similar to the one in episode 3 of the first season, but the way Momo perceives Okarun… They knew each other much less, but the memories she chooses of him are significant and show what she thinks of him, whereas in the first burst it was just mere empathy for a boy she had just met. Momo is very bad at talking about her feelings, she is more about actions than words, but every time she feels that Okarun may be in danger, her world falls apart and it reminds her that she has to close the distance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike Momo, Okarun is very honest about his feelings and doesn't hesitate to express them openly, but he's very insecure. He believes in Momo and that she'll save him, but not that she'll ever love him back. Even though he's promised to fight for her. That's why he's always very respectful toward her, both when he touches her and considers it inappropriate and when he uses formal honorifics. But that's something he already made clear to us during his conversation with Jiji. In addition to liking her, he "respects" her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When one hugs the other, they let go. I suppose that while Dandadan doesn't fall into the typical anime clichés, it's true that it borders on some of them. The relationship, after 200 chapters of the manga, isn't fully formalized, and that's partly why. They both know exactly what they feel for each other but are unable to communicate it to the other, either out of fear and insecurity or because they have trouble expressing themselves, especially verbally. Still, every second these two spend together is worth entire romance animes because it feels real and organic.
In short, a closing chapter of an arc that has given us action, drama, suspense, romance, and fights. It's normal that Dandadan's chapters seem to last only 5 seconds.

Recap Dandadan 2x03
Another episode that seems to go at double speed. I don't know how Dandadan manages to make every episode feel like it's two minutes long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I live every little scene of Momokarun. Just a few days ago, Okarun had given up on Momo, and now that he's decided to fight for her, I feel like everything's starting to fall into place. Okarun has to be very conscious of being the closest to her in this scene. Well done!
Tumblr media
One word: Tension!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every Okarun transformation scene makes me scream 'a man' at my screen. I should have gotten used to his design, but it's flawless. And you can tell how the transformations are smoother and cleaner in each episode because he's able to control them better.
Tumblr media
I won't tire of repeating this, but Momo's true power (even if her potential is infinite) lies in her head. She's capable of creating new strategies in real time at a speed that none of her other teammates are capable of. Even though I notice that Okarun is improving at this, like with the jet-chair idea, and Aira, who is really showing off in the latest arc of the manga, Momo is still the best strategist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sorry if this part of the recap isn't very positive, but this fight looks very nice, but it doesn't make much sense to me. I have a lot of problems with the two main fights between Okarun and Evil Eye (we'll see the other one later this season). The animated version looks super cool, but it has the same problems as the original version. I still don't fully understand how Okarun can win this fight.
Even if I wanted to think positively about the conditions, like maybe Evil is adapting to the body or that he was 'poisoned' by the snake's spores… Okarun was in the same situation; he was also in the snake's poisoned environment and had also suffered wear and tear during his attacks. And as far as we know, Evil Eye doesn't have a cooldown like Okarun does to recover and gain new power charges. He can simply stay in the game indefinitely without a limit on the number of uses of his two main powers.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, "the house" as an excuse for the small space seems silly to me. Honestly, Evil can enter and exit the house at will. He could have simply stepped outside and left Okarun inside. He could have even sent the plasma ball hurtling towards the house and knocked him out from a distance. Yes, Evil isn't a great strategist, but this fight leaves a lot to be desired and directly conflicts with the fight we'll see relatively soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS SPEECH!! Okarun's priorities here are so clear, yet they show a great character development. Okarun was the guy who didn't even fight to defend himself, and who at first couldn't help Momo, always competing with her over who gets into the tunnel or who ends up getting messed up in fights… AND NOW… Now his priority is Momo, followed by his friend, and finally, himself! He ranked up. Good boy Okarun, you're doing well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same exercise as in chapter 11. xD
Tumblr media
The turbo in this scene… She's the cutest thing. Poor thing, she thought nobody was going to help her and this reminds me that in theory her story is also based on yamauba's. A type of yokai that were born from the spirits of the elders abandoned in the forests. I must say that this information about her story being based on yamauba's would only be corroborated by extra information and not by information integrated into Dandadan's manga. Of the main characters, the only ones who don't have significant flashbacks are Okarun and Turbo.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I wish It had digested them.

The turbo and the luck
There's been a lot of speculation about this theory in the fandom, but after the latest episode, I think we're closer than ever to official confirmation—pending a specific panel from the manga to corroborate it.
I'm specifically referring to the fact that the turbo has passive powers that bring good luck to those around her. This might sound pretty crazy if you're unfamiliar with this theory, but the truth is, there are countless instances where this theory seems to hold true, both in the manga and the anime.
Tumblr media
Episode 2.
First of all, let's get some background. Turbo's cat form appears in chapter 5 of the anime and chapter 11 of the manga. When Seiko asks Momo to find a doll in the house, Momo grabs a Maneki-neko from the entrance to the house. It can be clearly seen throughout episode 2. Although it can be easily overlooked, it's a lucky charm in the home of a renowned medium. One who grants power to objects through words. It could have been a simple trinket, but things evolve as the chapters go on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 14.
After this, we have no further indication that turbo grants good luck until the acrobatics arc. This fact is more clearly mentioned in chapter 14 of the manga and chapter 6 of the anime. How coincidences prevail around her to her advantage.
Although this isn't mentioned again in the manga, or at least I don't remember any moment where it's clearly mentioned. There are countless times when Turbo stays with the boys just to bring them good luck.
Tumblr media
Chapter 48.
For me, the clearest moments occur during the cursed house arc, when Okarun gets stuck in the mud rescuing Turbo, and despite everything, they manage to survive.
Tumblr media
Chapter 61.
The second key moment would be during the cursed eye arc. When Turbo remains attached to Okarun throughout the fight. A fight he wins by dialectics, not by force, because Okarun was clearly at a disadvantage.
Tumblr media
Chapter 163.
And finally, in the Danmara arc, when the cursed basket begins to disintegrate, leaving only Turbo and Momo in it. Not only is their place the last to be destroyed, but they both make it out alive.
Surely there are others, but these are the ones that came to mind right now. But let's get back to the anime. What does the new episode add to this theory that solidifies it as canon? During this episode, her powers are clearly mentioned twice.
Tumblr media
The first is when the Kito are harassing Momo and the hot springs, and they collapse. At that precise moment, it's revealed that the turbo has snuck into Momo's things and that she was enjoying a bath. It also mentions luck again.
Tumblr media
The second is during the fight in the house where one of the Kitos tries to make a pass at Momo again. Turbo yells at him, and he trips over a bottle, leaving him incapacitated.
Another time we can talk about how Turbo is incredibly tsundere and how she's particularly concerned about protecting women from sexual harassment and assault.

Dandadan Recap 2x02
Tumblr media
I had serious doubts that Okarun's shift into wild mode was related to the idea of censoring the suicide theme. But if they didn't censor it in the first season, it's incomprehensible why they would censor it in the second. Many said the acrobatic flashback was too subtle, but I didn't see it that way. Nevertheless, I appreciate that they were honest about this part, including the parents' scene, which is probably the darkest of all on this subject.
Tumblr media
The turbo once again demonstrates how much she cares for the boys and that she wants to save them at all costs. Her excuses for why she keeps helping them are becoming less and less believable. xDD I love her a little more each time.
Tumblr media
Jiji carrying the whole gang is the definition of A MAN. While Momo and Okarun try their best to kill themselves using both the tools at their disposal and their psychic powers. There's something that still grates on me about all this regarding Momo's powers, but I'm going to wait until the Cursed Eye arc to talk about it in more depth.
Tumblr media
I expected Evil Eye's flashback to be much, MUCH worse. My impression of the manga versus the acrobatic one is that its story was sadder. But they didn't want to overdo it. I mean, I don't think they couldn't have made it sadder; they just didn't want to. I have to say, the drawing style in this part is incredible, and it often reminds me of old illustrations.
Tumblr media
This part. This little bit broke my heart way more than the entire flashback. I'm not going to lie and say I didn't cry because I did. Jiji is such a good person, and poor Evil Eye… A baby with super strength.
Tumblr media
Jiji's transformation is incredible. It was already awesome in the manga, but here it looks amazing. It's always caught my attention because of the four official transformations we have (I'm not sure how to classify Rin's), it's the strangest. He doesn't have a mask, he doesn't have the fluorescent lines, and he doesn't have a semi-transformation. I know that Curse Eye and Jiji's conditions are a little different from those of their companions Okarun, Aira, and Zuma, but it's still always caught my attention.
It's a topic I'm very interested in, but unfortunately, there are many gaps to fill in. Evil comes out rather shortly after the conclusion of his two arcs, and Jiji doesn't seem to explore that aspect of his powers much, but his appearance most likely has a lot to do with his power level.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing along the same lines, his powers and combat have been quite impressive in this episode. I suppose that's precisely why there wasn't time for a more intense flashback like the one we got with the acrobatics. We already see several of her features, such as the curse, the soul ball, and the barrier, which are sort of borrowed powers from the souls in the house, a bit like the crab and the turbo granny. Also, and the most worrying thing about the Cursed Eye's powers is that they have no limits on their use, as is the case with Okarun…
My prediction for the next chapter is that the cursed house arc will be completely wrapped up. Dandadan doesn't tend to drag out fights any longer than necessary and likes to leave room for other topics.

Dandadan Recap 2x01
I've decided to do quick recaps. This way, I can capture my first impressions of the episodes without having to go into much more detail. This gives me time to review the more detailed sections and get a general idea out of the box.
Tumblr media
I love the opening and will probably do a post about it too. I just love that it revolves around romance and Okarun's perspective. The ending has several interesting things, but honestly, I don't like it that much, nor do I think it adds much insight. First impressions of Kinta, Rin, Manjiro, Chiquitita, and the band.
Tumblr media
The Kito are just as disgusting as they are in the manga… What I do find interesting, and what highlights their supernatural nature even more, is the choice of colors. The gray skin, the yellow eyes, and the black blood!! How crazy!
Tumblr media
THE DIALOGUE ABOUT TURBO AND LUCK. I'll make [a specific post] on this topic. OMG. It seems the theories are confirmed.
Tumblr media
MANJIRO!!
Tumblr media
All of Momo's thoughts about Okarun while at the temple (L)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We now have official colors for Tsuchinoko. Although they've already appeared in the trailers, I noticed that the snake uses yellow, and Evil Eye uses purple. Complementary colors. It makes perfect sense because, in a way, they're enemies. Chef kiss
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH WHAT? THIS IS A BIG CHANGE FROM THE MANGA. IT HAS A LOT OF IMPLICATIONS AAAH I'M GOING TO GO CRAZY. You have a post about this [here].

Dandadan's wild forms and emotions
Tumblr media
For manga readers, this scene probably came as a surprise. For non-manga readers, Okarun doesn't lose control at this point (I won't say anything else to avoid possible spoilers).
What I find interesting about all this is that the manga also showed us what happens when a human with yokai powers loses control due to the influence of a second yokai. This happens with Unji Zuma starting in chapter 148 and later. And it's completely consistent with what appears in chapter 1 of the second season.
Tumblr media
For those who don't quite understand the situation: Yokai powers are strongly influenced by the emotional state of the protagonists, and their appearance and manifestation can be altered. In this case, the influence of the yokai is driving negative emotions in Okarun and Momo. Unlike the monstrous transformation caused by the turbo when it first possesses him, now it's Okarun's induced state that brings him to this form, and as we can see, it's a different appearance than his initial one.
The other detail we shouldn't forget is that yokai are personality enhancers. The reason Okarun's yokai form is so depressed is because he already is. Just as Aira becomes more direct or Zuma more protective. Their personalities are there, but with an added intensity. Jiji's case is a little different because he's never piloting the ship… But it's important to remember that the appearance and personality of yokai forms is relative. It depends entirely on the state of their owners, and if any of them were to change drastically, so would their yokai form. Either because they change or because an external agent temporarily influences them.
Tumblr media
Finally, remember that if this was the turbo's form when she was in control, it's because her negative emotions, laden with anger and rage, were winning. It's a wild, rough, and monstrous form. Not that of a yokai in control like Reiko's "cute" form. We can be sure the turbo has been raging for a long time, and for good reason.

Most anime: The popular girl fell for the nerdy guy because it turns he has a heart of gold, which she really likes. The nerd melted the popular girl’s icy heart. Even though no one noticed him, she always noticed him. There was just something about the nerdy guy that made the popular girl fall in love with him. Even though the nerdy guy just played video games and kept to themselves most of the time, the popular girl fell for him because he was nice to her once.
DanDaDan: The popular girl falls for the nerdy guy because she’s a fucking weirdo too. Even the main female protagonist is weird af. All the main characters are weird.
