i feel like first and foremost i have to note ( because it ’ s fundamental to my portrayal &. the context of my characterisation ) that zatanna does not perform her magic without a price , but rather trades usually in the form of physical pain : an eye for an eye .
this includes but is not limited to : fainting &. passing out , day - month long comas , bleeding from the eyes / nose / mouth / ears , internal bleeding , heightened mortality , visible physical decay &. displacement / distortions , etc .
though most of these are limited to extreme spells and she is able to recover from a majority of them , it takes time and is an extremely taxing process both physically ( obviously ) and mentally . this is partially why she so often swears off of magic only to somewhat reluctantly return for the benefit of others and prefers to use illusionist methods in her performances as opposed to real magic .
bonus note : the rituals &. spells she performs are extremely dangerous and have , on several occasions led to the deaths of those involved . she has watched / been responsible for numerous deaths and this is an extreme guilt on her conscience .
