"Happy Birthday!" → Part of the Stefán Karl 50th Celebration Prompt List

Today would've mark Stefán Karl's 50th year, the milestone that inspired me to finally begin this month-long celebration in hopes of bringing fans together.

I’ve wanted to do something like this for years. As I mentioned in the announcement post, the idea was partly inspired by something Steinunn Ólína once shared:

"I remember how determined he was to celebrate his 50th birthday and repeatedly invited his doctors to that party of hope."

Last year, I had something prepared like usual, just a simple portrait to mark his birthday on July 10th. But I wasn’t in a good place mentally. I wasn’t satisfied with what I had drawn, and even though it was complete, I knew I could do better but I just couldn't at the time.

So I left it in my drafts and didn’t post anything.

While preparing for this celebration, I remembered that portrait. And I decided to give my idea another chance. I started fresh, with better references, a clearer head, and more technical tools I learned, 3D posing, photo editing, and some light photo-bashing.

But looking at them now, I realize this isn’t just a difference in skill. It’s a difference in my mental health.

Even if the older one wasn't as detailed, it was still good, but just not as good as I would've liked it, so, I went all out for the second one.

Regardless of which one people like, I'm happy to finally post them both and to use this month as a motivator to get better overall.

This is not the end of the celebration, so, I hope you look forward to see more and to join in as well!

"Something He Taught You" → Part of the Stefán Karl 50th Celebration Prompt List

This was one of the prompts I struggled with the most.

I wanted to create an edit to go with my thoughts, and after some time, I was finally satisfied with how it turned out. But that still didn’t make it any easier to figure out what I wanted to write.

The truth is, I’ve learned so much from Stefán Karl that it feels impossible to sum it all up in one post... So maybe I should start with the first thing he helped me through.

I first learned about him toward the end of 2016. I was around 16 or 17 at the time, going through the kind of things any depressed and socially anxious teenager might face, especially one who had been bullied throughout school.

But something shifted the day I learned about Stefán Karl’s illness. It was the first time I felt a strong, immediate need to help someone I didn’t even know. I couldn’t fully explain why, but I remember begging my parents to donate to him.

From that point on, I kept up with him. I read everything he posted. I watched everything I could find. I wanted to learn more about who he was. It was the first time I ever truly "idolized" a real person.

Over time, I realized that idolizing him wouldn’t be right. He was a human being, it would be wrong to put him up on a pedestal if I truly cared about him as a person.

Still, he became a massive role model for me. He brought me joy, encouragement, and inspiration. He made me want to be better.

At the end of the day, I’m human, and so was he. We make mistakes. We say things we don’t mean. We let emotions get the better of us. But despite all that, I try to follow the guidance he left behind. His thoughts, his feelings, his words... they continue to touch me deeply.

It’s his humanity that made me respect and admire him even more.

He will never know who I am, but I learned so much from him. My life changed because of him. Thank you, Stefán Karl. 💜🌱

"Voice Acting" → Part of the Stefán Karl 50th Celebration Prompt List

For the Voice Acting prompt, I wanted to highlight my favorite character and voice performance by Stefán Karl: Count Dracula from Hotel Transylvania 2!

I chose to draw him as if he was in a live performance rather than just animated.

Sadly, the first film didn’t get an Icelandic dub, but the sequel did and Stefán voiced the lead role. I loved watching it so much. His performance in it is amazing!

"Sing It Loud" → Part of the Stefán Karl 50th Celebration Prompt List

I also struggled with what to do for this prompt, but the idea came to me once I saw who I was drawing!

None other than the Dentist himself, Orin Scrivello, or Broddi Sadó in Iceland! I'd even argue that his song is the most iconic in Stefán's catalogue outside of LazyTown. ;)

"Bitten by the Theater Bug" → Part of the Stefán Karl 50th Celebration Prompt List

This particular prompt was a difficult one for me, since there were so many characters I could have chosen. If the Grinch didn’t already have his own prompt, I would have picked him. If we had a full recording of Spamalot, I might have gone with Prince Herbert, or even the Dentist!

But instead, I wanted to highlight a character who touched me deeply, and a show that holds a lot of sentimental value for me.

Sean Harkin from Stones in His Pockets may have not gotten much stage time, but without spoiling anything, he plays an incredibly integral role in the story.

This choice also brings back a memory from 2017, when we heard the news that Stefán Karl would be returning for a new production of Stones in His Pockets. My friend @smartsmjatt and I stayed up late hoping to watch it together, but we got the timing wrong and had to wait until the next day. Thankfully, the live showing was still up!

"Your Favorite Movie" → Part of the Stefán Karl 50th Celebration Prompt List

If I had to pick a favorite movie with Stefán Karl, I’d go with Jóhannes (2009). And there’s one big reason why.

Is it because the movie is funny? Yes, but that's not it! Is it because it's groundbreaking? Not exactly, but... Is it because of Stefán’s hilarious and unique performance? Also yes, but that's not it! Although I do love Diddi :)

The actual reason is because searching for this movie is what started it all for me.

Back in early 2017, there weren’t many films or shows that fans could easily access with Stefán in them. Aside from LazyTown and Glanni Glæpur í Latabæ, there was Áramótaskaup and Regína, but not much else.

It was nearly impossible to find anything beyond trailers or IMDb pages. And back then I really wanted to watch Jóhannes, Polite People and Stella for Office but every search led nowhere, just the same few clips I had already seen.

Still, I kept going. I searched everywhere I could: across websites, forums, even eBay listings.

Until suddenly... one faithful day I found a link to watch the movie on the Lazytown RPG forums!

I was ecstatic! I saved it immediately and sent it to any fan looking for it and that alone opened the floodgates, if I could find one movie... who knows what else I could find?!

Since then, I’ve tracked down many more of his works, and every post I share at @stefankarlfanblog carries its own story and sentimental value, all thanks to this starting point :,)

Celebrating Stefán Karl's 50th

On July 10th, 2020, Steinunn Ólína wrote a memorial article for Stefán Karl, this a translated snippet from it:

"I remember how determined he was to celebrate his 50th birthday and repeatedly invited his doctors to that party of hope. I also remember the black doubt in their eyes, even though they accepted the invitation with gratitude and sorrow that they could not hide no matter how hard they tried to push the steel into us at times. Despite my professionalism, it never occurred to me how difficult it is for good doctors to watch young people die little by little in their hands."

This has stuck with me ever since. It broke my heart but it made me want to find a way to bring fans together to celebrate his 50th.

So, I made a July celebration prompt list to inspire fans of all kinds!

I’ll be posting for each of these prompts throughout July, and you’re welcome to join in at your own pace, in any order 💜!

Coming back with something new

Hello everyone, I'm sorry for disappearing for so long. Due to some personal matters and life getting busy. I had to take a long offline break. The regular schedule will be on hold but I'll still be posting.

Regardless of that, I've been hard at work preparing things for the blog and this fan project overall 🙏💜!

Donating my last month's sales from Redbubble to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation 💚

On July 10th, I made a post opening up my Redbubble with a plan to donate 50% of the sales in Stefán Karl's name every month :]

I was able to make enough sales to accoumlate 11.98$; rounded that up to a 12$ and donated half of it ^^ Redbubble only sends the money to my account once I've made 20$ dollars but figured to still donate the money until then :]

I'm extremely grateful to the people who have bought things from my account and I'm hoping to create more content for my account 🙏💕

I have been having issues connecting to Redbubble from my own end, but I am looking for a temporary fix until it gets sorted, but I also wanted to bring more awarness to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation on this day:
