Career Goals
Part 1:
On the first day of class, my career goals were to be the best student and intern I could possibly be. New York City has always been the place I wanted to start my career due to the endless opportunities.  Prior to the internship, I had no idea what direction I wanted to take my career. The fashion industry is so diverse that it can be hard to narrow it down. Initially, I thought I wanted to be a buyer. Although, that changed very quickly once I took a planning and buying class. I have always known that I love working with people. Interning at Nicholas K has definitely aspired me to be a go-getter.
 Part 2:
My goals, perceptions, and aspirations have completely changed since the first day of class. Getting the opportunity to have a hands-on learning experience is wonderful. I am so thankful for my internship at Nicholas K and our field experience appointments. I can already tell that I have grown as a person. My job in the fashion industry no longer seems far away. My supervisors always gave me critical feedback and allowed me to learn from my mistakes. As an intern it can be discouraging to find out you messed up or completed something wrong. At first, I used to get upset with my mistakes. Now, I am so happy to know when I mess up. Jehan, my manager, made sure to give me tasks in different areas of the fashion industry. I knew that I did not like the tasks that included math. I learned that I loved helping with tech-packs and fabrics, more on the product development side. As well as, helping the team with public relations. One of my favorite tasks was assisting during market week. I genuinely loved meeting all the buyers and helping the stores complete their upcoming seasons. I know for sure that engaging with people makes me happy. Therefore, I would be very satisfied with an interactive job.
 Part 3:
My favorite speaker was Mai at Bishop Collective. Mai gave us amazing advice about the fashion industry. She was very intriguing. I loved how her career choices were random, which showed she was not afraid to get what she wanted. Mai explained that she got a degree in fashion history at FIT, leading to her teaching at FIT and opening a boutique. Growing up, she never thought about being a teacher or a store owner. Mai and her partner have continued to work two jobs and invest well in their money. CFDA made a huge impression on me. It amazes me that the CFDA is dedicated to empowering others in the fashion industry through philanthropy and mentorship. Sustainability is very close to my heart. I was very excited to hear the CFDA created an informational guide on how to be sustainable in everything you do. Unethical behavior has been going on for too long, and our planet is being affected. I am hoping our generation will make major changes in the fashion industry.

Talbots
Part 1 | Research:
Talbots was founded in 1947 in Hingham, Massachusetts by Rudolf and Nancy Talbot. The couple inherited a store from Rudolf’s father; later naming it ‘The Talbots.’ Rudolf and Nancy began selling women’s clothing only in store. Then, realized a catalog would attract a lot of customers. Talbots is known for their classic pieces. Talbots has a distinct customer, who knows what they want. Talbots is a clothing store for women’s apparel and accessories. This company has continued to grow over the years, with more than 600 stores and an ongoing catalog. For almost 30 years, Talbots stayed a small regional chain until it was purchased by General Mills. Mills is the reason for Talbots mass expansion. Although, in 1980, Talbots was sold to a Japanese retailer. Talbots expanded to overseas in the 1990s.
 Part 2 | Observations:
As we walked around Talbots, we got to see all the different parts of the fashion industry. Dana works in human resources, but three of the other speakers work in design, product development, and merchandising. All three sectors work together to produce the final garments. Jackie’s friend works in design at Talbots. The two have been friends since they worked at Ann Taylor. It’s super cool to see how everyone is relevant in your life for a reason. I loved seeing the concept room. The merchandisers and product development team pulled inspiration from past seasons of other designers. The room was full of fabrics and pictures of Summer 20 inspiration. Talbots is using Positano, Italy as the theme for Spring 20. I was super excited to hear that because I have been to Positano. Also, we got to see the design room and see where everything comes to life. The head of product development told us that sometimes you need to see the garment in person to know whether it will work or not. She showed us a picture of Michelle Obama wearing a Talbots dress.
 Part 3 | Weekly Question:
Talbots was my favorite company we got to tour. The women and men we met were phenomenal. The first speaker, Dana, was spunky and up-beat. I genuinely enjoyed listening to her encouraging words about the fashion industry. Dana was at Macys for over 15 years. Then, randomly, Macys decided to close her division. Therefore, Dana had to search for a new job. Honestly, Dana taught me that you never know what to expect in fashion, or life. Instead of mourning her job, Dana got right back on her feet and started searching, leading her to Talbots. Also, Dana went to school for fashion, but ended up getting a job in human resources. As I get older, it makes me realize that you are never stuck, which is very relieving. Another important thing I learned was it is okay to get let off. Jackie, Dana, and two other women from Talbots said it has all happened to them. My goal is to turn negative actions into positive actions. Being negative will get you nowhere.

Hudson Yards
Part 1 | Research:
Hudson Yards is a real estate development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighborhoods of Manhattan. The vessel was created to be a visual center peace in the middle of Hudson Yards. The vessel is a 11-hectare development that sits above a rail yard. The developers created a structure that could be used by the public. The vessel was inspired by the ancient stepwells of India. The steps are supposed to reflect the repeating steps that reach down to earth. The vessel is composed of 2,500 steps and 154 flights, creating an experience for all visitors. The vessel shows an amazing view of the Hudson Yards neighborhood. The vessel is intended to be a legacy for the public of New York. Forty-Five Ten is a designer store located in Hudson Yards. Forty-Five Ten is a boutique that merges art and fashion. The collection includes luxury designers. The layout is clean and crisp, with a comfortable environment. Forty-Five Ten was founded in 2000 by Brian Bolke and Shelly Musselman. The store immediately caught the viewers’ attention due to the assortment of unconventional designers. Kristen Cole is now the president of Forty-Five Ten. The corporate office is located in Dallas, Texas.
Part 2 | Observations:
Hudson Yards can be very overwhelming because there is so much to look at. The layout is amazing and easily accessible. You can tell the stores were specifically chosen; ranging from moderate price ranges to luxury. Hudson Yards is very special due to the unique layout and architecture. The Vessel attracts people from around the world. People don’t even have to enter the shopping mall to see the beauty of Hudson Yards. Personally, I loved the unique art pieces around the mall. There is a very cool sequin wall that you can write on. As well as, uplifting quotes for women. I think Hudson Yards Is the future of fashion because people no longer want to just shop…everyone wants an experience. The experience is the most important part. While attending Hudson yards, I did not buy anything, but I feel very classy. The shops are full of wealthy, fashionable people. Neiman Marcus was extravagant. The visual merchandisers did an amazing job displaying the products. I wanted to buy everything. The mix of low and high shops makes it accessible to all markets. Also, the Vessel attracts so many people, which intrigues consumers about the shopping inside. Honestly, it is brilliant.
 Part 3 | Observations:
Hudson yards is definitely a modern way to shop due to the high-tech environment, lavish stores, and high-quality restaurants. Hudson yards even has a really nice organic grocery store with a coffee bar. Now, you can shop, eat, and drink a coffee while enjoying an amazing view. The mall is huge and full of many stores with a ton of stores. Also, there was a store to buy water that had no employees. The layout was meant to be cash free and purchased on your phone. You text the number after purchasing the water and the receipt is sent to your phone.

Bishop Collective
Part 1 | Research:
Mai moved to New York City to pursue a major in Fashion History. After graduation, she realized there was not a lot to do with a Fashion History major, challenging herself to try something new. Mai never thought she would be a teacher, but decided to give it a shot. Currently, Mai works at the Fashion Institute of Technology teaching Fashion History. Mai still wanted something more and decided to create a boutique. Bishop Collective used to only be eCommerce until last year. Mai opened up the store front for people who want a unique closet. Fast-fashion is not where Bishop Collective customers shop. Everything is ethically produced in America, providing workers with paid livable wages. Mai and her partner wanted to create a clothing store that inspired people to shop sustainably. All of the products are handpicked for the Bishop Collective customers. Mai attends markets each season to find unique pieces. Mai and her partner prefer quality over quantity, creating a humble experience in Bishop Collective.
  Part 2 | Observations:
Mai was an amazing speaker. I genuinely loved listening to what she had to say. Mai gave us advice about how to maintain money while starting a new company.  Mai’s partner and her have always had two jobs. They want to make sure they are able to continue to bring money back into the company, Bishop Collective. Although, Mai informed us that starting a company can be a lot of work. Like I said, Bishop Collective was originally ecommerce only. Mai decided to open a store front almost a year ago. Before opening a store front, Bishop Collective used to have pop-ups around NYC. Mai explained to us that pop-ups are very draining due to unpacking and setting up, then packing it all back up within days. Mai began searching for store fronts that would attract people on the go. Bishop Collective is located next to the SoHo House, an elite club for people all over the world. Therefore, business people pass by the shop all the time. A business woman stopped into Bishop Collective for a new wardrobe. Mai said she left the store with six or seven items. This woman had a meeting at the SoHo House and did not feel like packing before her trip.
 Part 3 | Weekly Question:
I thought Bishop Collective was a lovely boutique. The layout is very minimal and classy, allowing the clothes to stand out. Mai is very selective when it comes to the products in her store. I love that she only purchases items that are ethically sourced. Sustainability means something different to everyone. Mai explained that she chooses the designers based on if they give fair wage and have healthy work environments. Mai has a wide variety of clothes in her store, which makes me realize how many ethically sourced designers there are. Sustainability is only growing bigger and bigger. In ten years, I think people like Mai will make the fashion industry a more ethical environment.

GBG
Part 1 | Research:
Global Brands Group was started in 2005 by Li and Fung. GBG was founded in 1906 in Guangzhou, China. These two wanted to create a wholesale business that focused on private label and branded apparel, focusing on expanding the relationship between companies. Li and Fung is a firm that is globally known and has been expanded into a multinational group. Li and Fung is a leader in consumer goods, design, development, sourcing, and distribution. Li and Fung is well-known for being listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. GBG started out as a small company with only a few licensed brands. As the group has grown, GBG is now a leading lifestyle business for branded apparel, footwear, and accessories. In 2010, GBG became a key-holder of Jimlar Corporation, which owns Frye. Also, in 2013, GBG acquired licenses with Spyder, Juicy Couture, and Tommy Hilfiger. GBG still has licenses with all these companies today.
Part 2 | Observations:
Jenna and Julie were amazing representatives for GBG. I loved their enthusiasm for the company and their specific jobs. Julie is a merchandiser for the women’s ready-to-wear brands at GBG. Julie was super open about her day-to-day responsibilities. Julie was very clear that merchandisers and designers go hand in hand when it comes to preparing for market and post market orders. Since GBG is licensed with many companies, Julie has to attend a lot of markets. She said that her team prepares the best they can for the buyers. Unfortunately, it is hard to be spot on because the previous season may be very different. Julie told us that in the spring most people will not buy black because the lighter colors are predicted to be more popular. Although, buyers can be very surprising and request a color that was not produced. Then, Julie has to tell the manufacturers the shirt needs to be made in black for a specific retailer. Also, buyers have told Julie that they do not like a certain pocket or detail on a clothing item. Therefore, the merchandising team has to pair up with the design team to recreate a look that will satisfy the buyers. The process of creating clothing items for each market is very tedious. Julie bumps head with the designers when an item is too expensive for the buyers. The design team gets frustrated because they don’t want to change their design, but Julie’s team has the best interest for the revenue of the company.
Part 3 |:
Jenna was able to show us around the different showrooms, which was super cool. I had no idea Frye, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and all these other brands were a part of GBG. GBG has a huge involvement with charity organizations. It makes me very happy to see a thriving company utilize its time and money to make the world a better place. Also, Jenna explained that GBG has an amazing internship program each summer, where Julie would be in charge of the interns in merchandising. I will definitely keep that in mind as I get closer to graduation.

Michael Kors
Part 1 | Research:
Michael Kors was born on August 9, 1959 in Long Island, New York. As a child, Kors’ mother allowed him to designer her wedding dress. At a very young age he was already enthralled with the fashion industry. Kors loved shopping and reading Vogue. Kors moved to New York City in the 1970s to pursue fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Although, he dropped out after two semesters. In 1978, Kors began working for Lothar’s, a French Boutique. While working for Lothar’s, Kors designed and merchandised his first collection. Kors first collection got a lot of interest, therefore, allowing him to start his own brand. Michael Kors Women’s collection launched in May 1981. The collection was sold at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. In the 1990s, Kors launched Kors by Michael Kors, a lower-priced line. Also, Kors became the creative director of Celine in 1997. Michael Kors is now under Capri Holdings Limited, a multinational fashion company. Kors owns Jimmy Choo and Versace.
 Part 2| Observations:
The speakers did an amazing job at explaining who Michael Kors is, and what he stands for. I had no idea that Kors was heavily involved with charity work. In October, each Michael Kors team goes to God’s Love We Deliver to volunteer. God’s Love We Deliver is a charity that delivers home-cooked meals to people in need. Thy provide high quality meals to people who cannot prepare meals for themselves due to an illness. God’s Love We Deliver also provides nutrition information for specific illness’. Kors has been involved with this charity for many years. The God’s Love We Deliver has a building in SoHo dedicated to Michael Kors. The SoHo location was opened in 2015. Kors provided the building to the charity. At the Michael Kors appointment, I learned that Kors deeply cares about his customers and coworkers. Rachel and Jenna told us that Kors comes into work often. Also, Kors has specific Michael Kors workers in each department store. Therefore, if there is a Michael Kors section in Macys, the workers are specifically picked to work for the Michael Kors collection only. Kors believes in having a quality experience when shopping his products. I think it is really important to have great customer service. Now knowing, it makes me like the brand even more.
 Part 3| Weekly Question:
Rachel and Jenna both said that having connections in the fashion industry is a major key. Rachel interned at Michael Kors before she started working at Michael Kors full-time. Rachel told us that she got the internship because her old cheerleading coach had a mutual connection. You never know who is going to be connected in the long run. Nowadays, it feels like the world is getting smaller and smaller. At twenty-one, I already feel like I am connected with people all over the world. Also, Rachel and Jenna told us that over 20,000 people apply to the Michael Kors internship. Therefore, it is very beneficial to know someone on the inside

Hilma af Klint
Part 1 – Research:
Hilma af Klint was born in 1862, in Solna, Sweden, raised by a middle-class family. She went to the Stockholm’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, later granting af Klint studio space. Af Klint created botanical drawings and painted landscapes, but she was truly interested in spiritualism. Throughout her life, af Klint participated in spiritual movements. In the 1890s, af Klint met up with four women who had the same beliefs as her, calling themselves The Five. The Five believed they could communicate and receive messages from higher beings by using a psychograph. A guide told af Klint to create paintings for the temple that were connected by a spiral path. The 193 works of af Klint are known as The Paintings for the Temple. In af Klint’s early years, she needed spiritual guidance for her works, but in the later years, af Klint was able to find her own spiritual path. Af Klint’s abstract paintings were too futuristic for her time. She instructed that The Paintings for the Temple should not be seen until twenty years after her death. Af Klint’s paintings were made for a future audience.
 Part 2 – Observations:
Af Klint’s paintings were definitely futuristic for her time. The bright colors and interesting shapes intrigue the audience. Although, I was not a huge fan of her work. Personally, I thought the paintings could have been done by a child. It was not anything special to me. I wish I could have connected with the art. I used to think I loved abstract and contemporary art. As I grow older, I realize that I appreciate more detailed work of people and landscapes. Artwork that is passionate and tells a story. The good thing about art is there is something for everybody. My friend Emma loved the Hilma af Klint exhibit, which I think is awesome. The world would be so boring if everyone loved the same art. In the end, I still respect Hilma af Klint for breaking social norms in her time period.  I think all art can be relevant to fashion. Fashion designers are inspired by art every day. My roommate has a friend who created a collection based off Hilma af Klint.
 Part 3 – Weekly Question:
Robert Mapplethorpe’s 1973 Candy Darling was my favorite piece of art. The four polaroid pictures were so innocent and full of life. I love how Mapplethorpe put bright colored frames around the black and white pictures. The pastel colors add a young and feminine feel. Also, Hilma af Klint played a lot with color. Even though I did not like Hilma af Klint’s paintings; I did appreciate her use of color. Everything was colorful. Personally, I love the layout of the Guggenheim. The architecture is so unique and visually appealing. The Guggenheim is a museum within a museum. The levels on the inside spiral up and you don’t even realize you’re on the next floor. I definitely want to go back to the Guggenheim and see the new exhibits

CFDA
Part 1 – Research:
CFDA, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc. is a non-profit trade association founded in 1962. The CFDA has over 500 members of designers in womenswear, menswear, and accessories. The CFDA raises funds for charity and activities in the fashion industry. A lot of people know about the CFDA due to their annual Fashion Awards. Also, the CFDA owns the Fashion Calendar and creates the New York Fashion week schedule. Eleanor Lambert is the women who started the CFDA. Eleanor Lambert spent over 70 years producing institutions and events that changed the way people look at the fashion industry. Now, Diane Von Furstenberg, former Board Chairman, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for being a monumental leader in the fashion industry. One year later, Diane Von Furstenberg was selected to be the CFDA’s president. Officially, Tom Ford is the new Chairman of the CFDA as of March 19, 2019. Tom Ford has been a part of the CFDA for many years (2000) and is honored to continue working with American fashion and its designers.
 Part 2 – Observations:
The speakers shared a lot of useful information for students. The CFDA focuses a lot on emerging designers in the industry. I thought it is very exciting that the CFDA strives to find new, raw talent. Four awards for students are: Kenneth Cole Footwear Innovation Award, Eileen Fisher Social Innovator Award, The Liz Claiborne Design Scholarship Award, and the Geoffrey Beene Design Scholarship award. The CFDA Scholarship Program was founded by Monika Tilley, an active board member and CFDA member. Monika Tilley created these awards to educate the younger generations:  the future of fashion. One of the speakers told us that you should never make a decision unless there is someone in the room under thirty. That honestly blew my mind. I never thought about the future that way. The way us millennials think is way different than our parents and grandparents. The generation we grew up in is changing fashion already. I cannot imagine the technological difference of the future generations. CFDA is super important to fashion because they are trying to reach the goals of the future by creating craft and quality, while remaining open-minded.
 Part 3 – Weekly Questions:
The CFDA is currently working on being more sustainable. Yes, sustainability is the “new” topic everyone is jumping on, but how do you maintain a sustainable company? The CFDA released a book to guide you in a sustainable path, whether it’s for a company or a personal goal. Personally, I was very happy to hear about the sustainable guidebook. I strive to be sustainable in my everyday life by not shopping fast fashion, buying less, and appreciating quality. Although, a lot of people have no idea what fast fashion is doing to the industry. In a bigger picture, fast fashion is changing our entire world. I think the CFDA may reach a lot of people with this guide. I hope one-day sustainability is taught in school, not just in fashion classes offered at a university.

M&S Schmalberg
Part 1 | Research:
M&S Schmalberg is custom hand-made flower company that has been around for 101 years. M&S Schmalberg has been making flowers for apparel, bridal, accessory, millinery, and home furnishing since 1916. Two brothers, Morris and Sam Schmalberg, started the company in New York City, which has always been in the Garment District. Their Nephew, Harold, inherited the family business. Now, M&S is owned by Harold’s two children, Warren and Deborah Brand. Warren’s son, Adam, began working at the family company four years ago. Adam makes the M&S a 4th generation family business. The Garment District used to be filled with flower manufacturers, but M&S is the last company in America to produce hand-made flowers.
 Part 2 | Observations:
Adam, Warren’s son, was our tour guide for M&S Schmalberg. As we entered, Vera Wang was having a meeting with M&S Schmalberg for custom fabric flowers. I had no idea that high-end designers are so interested in hand-made flowers. Adam explained to us that a lot of designers come in for custom work. The hallway entering the room was filled with celebrities wearing M&S flowers – from LeBron James to Beyoncé. I was shocked. The detailed flowers were beautiful. M&S Schmalberg does everything by hand and has a workspace with many people creating flowers. Adam showed us how to cut 100s of flowers with one machine. When the business started, the schmalbergs had to cut them all by hand. The workspace was very old-looking. I loved how they did not update it because it made me realize how long M&S has been around. While touring the shop, we got to meet a couple of workers and watch them make the flowers by hand. The simple flowers looked easy to make, but definitely would take a long time. The flowers come in all shapes and sizes, including different fabrics. Adam showed us a flower made out of a Burberry scarf. My friend Brooke bought her mom the Burberry flower. I, of course, was drawn to all the leather options. I bought my aunt a black leather flower that was originally made for Chanel.
 Part 3 | Weekly Question:
Adam showed us many of flowers, but one flower excited me the most. I have always been a huge fan of Sex and the City, so when Adam showed us a custom flower for Sarah Jessica Parker, I was super pumped. M&S made “Carrie Bradshaw” a huge white and gold flower for an episode of Sex and the City. Adam pulled up the exact scene she was wearing the flower. I was blown away by how popular M&S has been. Also, Adam proved to us that a flower can be made out of anything. One of the flowers was made out of a dollar bill. Obviously, it was not for sale, but still very cool to see in person. Lastly, many flowers were made out of fur and reptile skin as well. Even though the flower business is not popular, I think M&S will be around for years and years to come.

Coterie
PART 1:
Coterie is a global market for buyers and retailers to purchase clothes, accessories, and shoes. Womenswear and menswear are offered for ready-to-wear. Coterie was started by UBM plc, a leading producer of well-known fashion trade-shows including: Coterie, Magic, Project, FN Platform, and Children’s Club. Coterie believes in giving consumers the best customer service while attending the merchandised shows.
 PART 2:
Coterie was an amazing show. The layout was very organized and appealing. I loved the set-up of the lounge areas. Coterie made me feel comfortable and not overwhelmed. There are so many sections, therefore, it is easy to get lost. Although, there are maps everywhere, and an app you could download for more information. The retailers did a really good job at merchandising their collections. Also, the workers at Coterie were very helpful with getting around the venue. While studying abroad in Florence, Italy, we got the amazing opportunity to attend Premiere Vision. PV had a similar layout as Coterie, but PV was way bigger. Honestly, I liked Coterie better because it was not as big. PV was overwhelming. I wanted to attend all the different sections at PV, but there were so many retailers and designers that I ran out of time. We had over three hours at PV and only went to a couple sections: fur, leather, denim, and a couple more. I felt like a mad man running around near the end, trying to see as many vendors possible. Both PV and Coterie had a vintage section, which was amazing. The pieces were super unique to the vendors. I genuinely wish I would have started in the vintage section at PV. Also, PV had a huge cafeteria for lunch and tons of other food options throughout the show – that shows how big the convention center was. Coterie was a more personal experience. At PV, I was nervous to touch the clothes and talk to the designers. The designers were pretty snobby, but I talked to a couple designers in the fur and leather section of the show.
 PART 3:
Coterie had a great selection of vintage retailers. Classic Coco had a wide variety of vintage Chanel purses. I loved the classic Chanel bags at Classic Coco. Although, the prices were very high. You could buy a brand new Chanel bag for the prices of the used one – the only downfall. Also, Morphew was my favorite of the vintage selection. The associate working the vendor was so nice. He made me feel very comfortable and I enjoyed the conversations we had about the fashion industry. Also, Morphew has a showroom in the same building as my friend Emma’s internship. New York City is such a small world. Morphew had the most unique items. The prices were moderate, but not terribly high. I loved all vintage patterns and silhouettes. Morphew had a range of high-end designer and contemporary designers. One of my favorite pieces was a cheetah dress by Dolce and Gabbana. The dress was to die for. I wish I could have afforded it.

The Whitney - Andy Warhol
Part 1 – Research:
Andy Warhol, born August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was an amazing artist that explored art in different forms. Warhol had a huge influence on fashion in his lifetime. bonding art and fashion as one. Raf Simons actually recreated Warhol’s Sterling Ruby paintings into women’s dresses for his Haute Couture Collection at Dior in 2012. Before becoming one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Warhol gained recognition from his shoe drawings. According to Andy Warhol,” Fashion wasn’t what you wore someplace anymore; it was the whole reason for going” (Lust in Fashion). Shortly after moving to New York City, Warhol got a job at Glamour Magazine in 1949. Immediately, Glamour’s art direction asked Warhol to illustrate shoes for the magazine. Warhol appreciated detail in his drawings. Warhol’s shoe illustrations blew up and people wanted to purchase a physical shoe like the drawing. Bottled-line technique is a unique drawing method that distinguishes Warhol from other artists. Warhol’s work appeared in Harper’s Bazaar sixty-nine times between 1954 and 1961. Warhol created a cover for Harper’s Bazaar in 1962. The cover included a women wearing a simple, white dress. On top, four stars float over the cover. The simple, creative cover was the perfect definition of Warhol.
 Part 2 – Observations:
Andy Warhol is an amazing artist. He keeps you guessing. The wide variety of different art forms is intriguing. The Whitney had a mix of minimal sketches and vibrant paintings created by Warhol. I think his artwork will be relevant for years and years to come. Warhol’s paintings are real and blunt. Warhol reminds me of Banksy. They both are not afraid to be political, but spunky. Warhol’s artwork is for everyone. At the Whitney, I caught myself people- watching. There were so many kids attending the exhibit. All of them were so excited to learn about Warhol’s artwork. They kept asking so many questions. I couldn’t stop smiling, listening in on the conversations. Warhol’s distinct artwork is intriguing to five year olds and 75 year olds. Also, I had no idea that Andy Warhol created fashion illustrations. I was not educated enough before entering the exhibit. Now, I can see how designers have been impacted by Warhol’s art.
 Part 3 –Weekly Question:
At the exhibit, there were so many pieces of artwork that inspired me. My favorite painting was “Sunset Purple and Blue”. I fell in love with the simplicity of the painting. The details are minimal, but the colors are bold. Sunsets have always been my favorite. The beauty is taken for granted. Warhol captured the colors almost too perfectly. I felt as if I was there.  Also, oddly, I liked the “Skulls” silkscreen. There is something so scary about bones, but intriguing. Warhol turned this skeleton into a piece of art. The dramatic shadows pull you in. I wonder what he was thinking while creating “Skulls”. Usually, bright colors would not be paired with a skeleton, but that is what makes Warhol unique. Warhol is evoking human emotion by creating artwork that is sensitive.

Chaps - Week 5
Chaps
 Part 1:
Launched in 1978, Chaps was originally made for men’s, but has now been expanded for the whole family. Chaps sells sportswear and casual clothing at a lower price point. The target market for women and men is 30 and above, although, Chaps is trying to reach a younger crowd by selling at Urban Outfitters.
 Part 2:
After attending the Chaps showroom, the designers and merchandisers provided us with helpful information. Madison, a Chaps designer, graduated from Kent State University with a major in Fashion Design. I enjoyed listening to what Madison had to say about the fashion industry. The others speakers gave helpful advice on how to be a better intern and achieve a good job after college. Jackie’s boss told us to be attentive and always ask if anyone needs help.
 Part 3:
One of the speakers told us that connections are huge in the Fashion Industry. The fashion industry is very interconnected. A previous boss could end up knowing your future boss. That’s why it is very important to have a good attitude and be a team player. LinkedIn has become a huge network all over the world. One of the speakers also told us to Link with everybody you come in contact with in the industry.

WGSN
WGSN is a trend forecasting agency that predicts trends two or more years in advance. WGSN stands for Worth Global Style Network and was founded in 1998. WGSN’s goal is to give a global view on trend. “Glocal” is a word that WGSN created to describe the importance of their trends. “Glocal” means to think global and local.
I learned so much about WGSN during the visit. Sean and Erin provided us helpful information about the company. WGSN is on all continents minus Antarctica. Color means different things around the world, which is why WGSN has to think globally when it comes to trends. Trends begin with the way people live their lives. 85% of WGSN users are fashion customers. Although, I had no idea how many fortune 500 companies WGSN is involved with. Sean explained to us that Starbucks, Disney, Apple, and much more use WGSN for future trends. I have always used to WGSN for fashion purposes, but now I understand that it’s useful for all business sectors.
While describing Sustainability, Sean described it as a lifestyle, not a trend. Sean’s perspective on sustainability resonated with me because it is a lifestyle for me. I no longer shop at any fast-fashion brands. I decided to make it a lifestyle change when I was educated on how bad fast-fashion is for the industry, and the world.

Week 3
Saks Fifth Avenue was created by Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel. They wanted to create a store that incorporated both of their independent retail shops. Saks became the first large retail store to open in a residential area. Horace Saks suddenly died in 1926. Adam Gimbel then took over as Saks Fifth Avenue’s president. The target customer for Saks Fifth Avenue is upper-middle class women and men who appreciate fashion and brand awareness. Saks is a special store because it offers a wide assortment of designers. Also, Saks does a lot of special collections that are only offered at their store.
Based on my operations, Saks has an amazing layout. Each designer is presented based on the style of the brand. I was intrigued by the different layouts. The designer collections I liked the best were Yves Saint Laurent and Miu Miu. I felt like I was in the actual retail stores. Saint Laurent was very crisp and classy. Miu Miu was also classy, but had a girly twist.  I thoroughly enjoyed the unique layout of each designer. Saks definitely achieved its merchandising direction. Every designer was targeted towards a specific customer. I think Saks can attract a lot of different styles.
While touring Saks, I saw a lot of designers I had never heard of before. Sacai was a very intriguing designer. The layout was wooden furniture with mirrors. The clothes went perfectly with the layout because Sacai has a vintage feel. Also, I had never heard of Alaia. Alaia had classic pieces that will never go out of style. The fabric of both brands were great quality. Overall, I was very impressed with Saks Fifth Avenue. As you walked in, the store was very bright and full of unique designers. The elevators were my favorite – very colorful and made me want to see the rest of the store.

Preface NYC
Preface NYC is a trend show created by Sonia Martin and Betsy Franjola. The two best friends wanted to create a unique experience for people to be inspired by upcoming seasons. Preface NYC showcases a collection of fabrics, textiles, and vintage pieces. These innovative fabrics are the perfect selection for upcoming seasons. The small and intimate space allows people to feel comfortable. Sonia and Betsy are very welcoming. With the assortment of people that attend Preface, there is something for everybody. While there, I noticed many companies shopping for fabrics. It was very cool to see the fabric come to life in finished garments. The different vendors were attentive to students. I learned a lot about the industry.
In the Fall of 2018, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy. As a school, we all went to Paris, France and attended Premiere Vision. P.V. was extraordinary. The layout was very neat and easily accessible. Although, P.V. was HUGE. I did not realize how overwhelming it would be to see thousands of fabrics. All the vendors were unique to themselves. My friend and I spent a lot of time in the leather and fur sections. Premiere Vision is very different from Preface NYC. Premiere Vision is the biggest trend show in the world. Therefore, the fabric options are unlimited. Also, P.V. was incredibly busy. People from all over the world come to Paris, France to see this trend show. I did not feel very welcomed at P.V. The vendors only cared about you if you were interested in buying their products. P.V. carried way more than just fabrics: shoes, clothes, accessories, purses, makeup, and much more. There was even a cafeteria upstairs, and a lot of food stands throughout the show. I personally liked Preface NYC better. At P.V., I was very nervous to talk to anybody. I did not want to get judged for being a student. Although, I regret that now. I should have talked to more of the vendors. The people I did talk to were very educational and knew all about their fabrics. At Preface NYC, we were able to directly talk to the creators of the show. Sonia even gave us a speech on sustainability. I was very impressed with Sonia and Betsy. They seemed very happy to have us in their studio.

Part 1: Research
Before coming to New York City, I thought the Garment District was going to be more extravagant. Along with that, I imagined there would be designer stores and fashionable people everywhere. In reality, the Garment District is not very different from the rest of NYC. The Garment district is kind of dirty and not pretty. Although, I understand that a lot of offices and manufacturers are in the Garment District. I arrived at these expectations because people talk very highly of the Garment District. My family members were very impressed that the Kent State Studio is in the Garment District. Looking back, I think it is funny the expectations I had. I genuinely like the Garment District though. Everyone is very motivated and on the move. The Fashion Industry can definitely not be glamourous. The first time I came to NYC I was 16 or 17. Therefore, I perceived NYC to be extravagant, along with the Garment District.
 Part 2: Observations
Now, my opinions definitely differ from when I was 16. I would not want the Garment District to be super glamorous. I love how raw it is. The Garment district is full of fabric stores, which is super cool. Like I said, I thought the streets were going to be filled with designer stores. In reality, the Garment District is where the garments come to life. Also, I did not realize how many businesses have offices in the Garment District. Two of my friends are doing their internships near the Kent Studio. The Garment District has a lot to offer.
 Part 3: Weekly Question
The scavenger hunt was full of memorable things, especially fabric stores. The first time I visited NYC, my Grandma took a picture of me in front of “M&J Trimming” because “MJ” is what I go by. I did not realize I would be seeing this fabric store every day. Also, when I was 16, I did not think I would be moving to NYC in college. Life is full of surprises. Secondly, I love the giant button and needle statue. The Kent Studio is super close to it. I walk by the button and needle almost every day. The last memorable thing I saw during the scavenger hunt was the New York Public Library. It is very beautiful. The New York Public Library stands out from other buildings. I definitely want to explore inside. I learned a lot of new things during the scavenger hunt. I did not realize Lord & Taylor was more than a 100 years old. It is very sad that Lord & Taylor is closing in NYC. Also, I learned that Mood Fabrics gives out free swatches. That is very kind of them to give away fabric. I will for sure be back. The fabric stores we found in the scavenger hunt will be perfect for future projects. I am very excited to explore more of NYC this semester. The appointments and museums will be great resources for our future in the Fashion Industry.
