Adrien and Marinette begin their recovery, beginning the birth of a new relationship...

“Marinette! There's someone here who wants to see you.” Sabine peeked through the door. “Who?” Marinette asked out of curiosity. “It's better that you see it with your own eyes.” Sabine winked at her.  Marinette went down towards the bakery, finding Adrien sitting on a chair Tom offered him. “Adrien!” Marinette came closer to him, to greet him. Marinette's parents left the bakery and hid behind the door. Tom stayed peeking behind the door, to see what Adrien had to say. “Marinette I, I wanted to apologize. I know that the trip we had was a complete fiasco and I would like to make it up to you.”

Chapter 12 Preview:

Adrien landed on the first platform of the Tower, his chest tightening as more and more people were turned into pigeons. The air filled with the sound of cooing, peppered with Mr Pigeon’s maniacal laughter. This wasn’t some kind of political revolt, like the akumas of Adrien’s time. This – this was insane.

And all thanks to the modern era’s butterfly miraculous holder. Hawk Moth, Fu had called him.

Adrien frowned, distantly aware of the sound of people on the Tower crying out as they tried to leave, their shoes beating down the stairs. Fleeing like that, from such a tall structure, wasn’t safe. And racing for the ground wouldn’t help. The only thing that could was….

Me.

He swallowed hard. He’d never had to come up with a plan before. That was always Pascha’s department. He just did what he was told, and then he went home. But no chance of that now. Everyone in Paris depended on him – just like they all depended on Marinette, when she wore the Ladybug costume. Somehow, she’d been shouldering the responsibility for her city all on her own. She – she was incredible.

And he couldn’t let her down.

The air was crisp in the marble room where the gala was being held, and yet there was so much skin on display. Adrien shivered, glad to be in a suit, even if it was ill-fitting. Whoever was keeping Gabriel afloat while his father was in prison wasn’t checking quality as much as the real Gabriel had. Adrien’s suit tightened on his biceps. What he wouldn’t give to be wearing one of the costumes Marinette had made.

“Gabriel, what exactly do you plan to do?” “I am going to akumatize someone.” Gabriel didn’t care to use his powers there at this point. He needed to find his son.  “What if you send his butterfly towards the sea? Maybe that way you could locate them in an easier way.” Nathalie advised. Akumatizing someone there in Nice would raise a lot of suspicions.  “The sea is too big, Nathalie. It wouldn't do any good because it would go too far and I would lose control over it.” reasoned Gabriel. Nathalie then thought of her other option. “Then akumatize me.”

Bathed in candlelight and sitting at a tiny table for two in Pink Mamma, Adrien checked his phone again. 8.45pm. Sipping his water, he picked up the menu for perhaps the thirtieth time. Lila had fifteen minutes to get here. Otherwise, he was going to leave. The sound of heels clacking on the floor made him lower his menu. ‘Adrien, I’m so sorry I’m late.’ Lila’s shining hair swung behind her as she walked towards him.

A sea of misfortunes - Chapter 9: Going back home

Chapter Summary:

It is the time for Marinette and Adrien to try and get out of the island where they got trapped again. Meanwhile Gabriel and Nathalie, alongside Marinette's parents are on their way to rescue them.

Snippet:

The group of adults were moving at a moderate speed through the sea. Nathalie was readjusting the position of the yatch to take them to their destination without any issue. Gabriel went out to the front deck of the yatch looking at the immensity of the sea. He hoped that his son and Marinette were still alive just like Tracker had told him. Nathalie went to speak with Gabriel once she finished with her duties.  “We're going in the right direction. In a few hours we'll reach our destination.” Gabriel's expression didn’t change, he was somewhat worried that they wouldn’t be able to reach them. He hoped nothing bad had happened to his son or Marinette. Nathalie noticed it, and decided to try to console him.  “Gabriel, I'm sure they'll be able to hold on a little longer while we get there. Don't lose hope.” Nathalie took his hand for a moment, feeling it cold to the touch. Those were the words that Gabriel wanted to hear.

Chapter 10: Mise en Abyme

“Wh… what else do you know?” she asked quietly. “…About the catacombs?” Despite her hushed tone, her voice still echoed off the walls. Her wings were fluttering considerably now, and he stepped closer, until his arm brushed gently against hers, and he felt her subtly lean into it. “There are around three hundred kilometers of tunnels. Though under two kilometers of it are accessible to the public.” “That… does not make me feel any better,” she said with an uneasy scowl. “There are approximately six million bodies in the ossuary,” he added. “That’s even worse, Cat!” “Sorry.”

Mise en Abyme, or "Placed in Abyss," is the technique of placing a copy of an image within itself, often in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. A common sense of the phrase is the visual experience of standing between two mirrors and seeing an infinite reproduction of one's image.

Triptych: A picture, painting, or carving presented in three panels, typically hinged together side by side. - A set of three parts or sections of associated artistic, literary, or musical works intended to be appreciated together. - A mirror with three hinged panels, which can be adjusted to show three separate reflections of a single subject from different angles.

I originally started with this digital painting of Marinette but then as I was going backwards to find the layer with Adrien I fell in love with the half coloured image. There was something evocative about the unfinished artwork, like her character in the fic in which it was drawn for, slowly developing over time. I showed my writer @burntwaffle12 and she liked it as well, so we went ahead with it. Even though we went with a different concept, I still wanted to share this art with you (click here to see the final finished cover art).

Chapter 11 Preview:

As the akuma alert blared through the palace, Marinette stood in Adrien’s room and stared into the darkness behind her eyelids – his eyelids – clutching at the image of Ailouros that Plagg had shown her on the holo-ring. Thinking about Adrien in his video message. Immersing herself in his sweetness and charm.

A small smile played on her lips – but she couldn’t let herself get distracted from her task. If she didn’t get this right, she’d transform into the wrong costume, and people would ask questions. Pascha would ask questions.

The klaxon blared louder, nagging at her to get a move on, and she opened her eyes. Plagg hovered in front of her, giving her a look of encouragement. Summoning every ounce of strength she had, she murmured the magic words.

‘Claws out.’

A wave of energy surged through her body. It wasn’t like her ladybug energy. It was darker, wilder, making her stagger. She threw out her arms for balance, then sucked in a breath as she caught sight of herself in the mirror that stood in front of her.

Ailouros stared back at her, his hands gripping his staff. Just as he’d looked in the holo-image.

Trembling, she stepped closer to the mirror, examining him – the last known holder of the black cat miraculous. He wore a black tunic that came down past his hips, with black leggings beneath, and black thonged sandals. His limbs and chest and tail were crisscrossed with blue and gold thread, and there were red and gold guards around his ankles and wrists. Around his neck was a thick necklace of gold, lapis, and rubies. It matched his mask, the eye holes ringed with gold beads.

Black cat ears poked out of his curly blond hair. She reached for one, fingering the tip with her claws – then dropped her hand. What was she doing, fondling him like that when he wasn’t even here? Besides, she had an akuma to fight!

Trying to keep his hands steady, Adrien poured Marinette a glass. ‘I’ve barely seen you this week. How have you been?’ ‘Um, good. Busy.’ She took the glass, and then a sip. A large sip. ‘How have you been?’ Miserable, pining for you, remembering our acting practice on a loop. ‘Yeah. I’ve been busy, too.’ ‘So …’ Marinette peered into her wine glass. ‘Is Lila coming tonight?’

She stood just before the gate, and in the narrow space, Catwalker had to lean over her petite frame to reach for the lock. Ladybug immediately shrank into the iron bars with a shiver, her face erupting bright red.  He let out a low chuckle in his throat before whispering close to her ear, “Don’t be a scaredy-cat.” Ladybug gulped loudly. “I-I’m not!” she protested. As if he couldn’t read her like a book. “Cataclysm.”

“A fish?” Marinette watched as the fish splashed on the shore. It wasn't very clear what kind of fish it was. Adrien and Marinette looked at each other. “Should we fish it?” Adrien wasn't quite sure what to do. The fish could be eaten, but at the same time Adrien felt somewhat bad for the animal. “We could do it.” Marinette saw Adrien noticing him a little unsure. “Surely we could find a way to catch it.”
