Last episodes of Weston Kuro anime has aired resently and it (plus new july 2024 GFantasy issue cover) finally confirms some old thoughts from my head.

This being said. Yana Toboso, her love for flowers and my love for analysis entered the room and sponsored this post.

Symbolically for the scene of the Midnight Tea Party, for the sake of which all the events at Weston School were, Toboso draws kadupul. By the way, in Japanese the flower is called Gekka Bijin - "The Beauty Under the Moon." I think it makes no sense to go into the details of how this endemic flower ended up in England at a private school as it doesn't really matter.

Anime adaptation gave colours to the old manga chapters from 2013 so I have no doubt that this flower is exactly IUCN Red List flower kadupul, since only kadupul of all the blooms of epiphytic cacti has a snow-white color (as shown in anime). Although i don't think anime did great job drawing the flower itself, coloring was all i desired.

Kadupul blooms only at night and only for a couple of hours. That is why it is a "pass" to a tea party in the manga: flower is presented in its closed form to an invitee, who later at night pins an already bloomed form on their jacket, which serves as identification of being an invited student. Again, I am not going to go into the fact that kadupul dies when torn off, due to which the flower considered invaluable, and in reality such a 'pass card' would not work. That's not why we're here anyway.

In Kuroshitsuji, it is interesting not only how the Queen of the Night is used for an invitation, but also the leitmotif regarding the plot. It is at the tea party, to which Ciel has been striving with many difficulties throughout the Weston arch, where he first encounters the result of successful experiments on the development of living corpses. And the parallel with kadupul – which is worth a lot of effort to see, whose nature of death is inexplicable and flowering has mythological and religious legends - fits in the most beautiful way. And makes so much sense.

Last cover with Undertaker shows kadupul as well. It's shining like full moon behind our masterminded ex-shinigami. Which means you could easly say that this new illustration takes place in Weston, and was drawn due to anime adaptation plot culmination. And i also think that P4 are holding all of broken crockery on illustration.

Fun fact but we have seen Undertaker already tree times appearing on GFantasy covers: frst time in 2013 September issue with 84 chapter (the Weston culmination), second time in 2017 February issue with 125 chapter and now in 2024 July issue with 213 chapters plus hiatus announcement and Weston anime ending.

Oh the Weston diva that he is, truly.
