Hello! I don’t know if you’ve answered this before but I was curious as to what your favourite interpretation of riddler was, specifically in regards to *why* he leaves riddles. Do you prefer a Riddler that leaves them because he likes the attention or because it’s an actual compulsion? Or maybe a mix of both?
Hello! Thank you for the question — I am sorry it has taken me this long. I much prefer Edward leaving riddles as an actual compulsion, which was his original interpretation.
At first, it used to be that Riddler physically couldn’t bring himself to even touch the item he wanted to steal without leaving a riddle. This was because of force of habit.

And then when the character evolved, it turned into a subconscious act derived from guilt.
I always preferred this over the other interpretations because I feel like it adds a certain depth and sympathy to his character and his actions — of course I still believe him to be desperate for acknowledgment, but I don’t think it’s enough to drive his compulsion.
Not to mention how much more tragic it makes all his genuine redemption attempts. Writers seem to believe kleptomania to be equal to someone adoring shiny things (cough… catwoman) when realistically, kleptomania is an impulsive and “recurrent urge to steal, typically without regard for need or profit”. Which fits Eddie quite well.

I mean he practically says it upfront in this panel. It really wasn’t about material gain of any kind, and mixed with his compulsions and obvious already impulsive behavior when it comes to throwing himself into the limelight, it would be an easy conclusion to draw.
From a more technical standpoint, another reason I’ve always liked it is because when it’s a true compulsion it’s harder for the writers to write it off as “haha stupid annoying Riddler can’t do anything right” and forces them to actually write him with care and acknowledge the intelligence and potential he has as both a villain and a hero.
(Panel 1, Batman #147)
(Panel 2, Gotham Adventures Vol 1 #28)
(Kleptomania definition, Oxford Dictionary)
