Do not allow capitalism to define your spirituality.

If you want things, cool. Be responsible. Do as little harm as you can.

But I've been a confirmed witch for over 20 years. Listen to me when I tell you, all you need is an immaculate will and other internal elements that no object can possibly touch.

Objects are useful to help focus your attention. But they are not necessary. Stuff is not necessary.

Accidental Appropriation

It happens, we’re all human. Even if we try our best to be socially conscious, we can’t expect perfection. There are a lot of posts talking about what is and isn’t appropriation but not a lot about what to do AFTER you know. If you discover your practice has been less socially conscious and respectful than you thought, here’s what happens next:

Don’t beat yourself up. 

Most people have one of two reactions to being told something they’re doing is bad: they get guilty or they get defensive (because getting defensive helps protect you from feeling guilty.) That’s a normal feeling- we’re told that only bad people do bad things, and we don’t want to be bad people. Getting reactionary and defensive only pushes the harm further, though, especially if you’re talking over members of a marginalized group about their own stuff. Instead, remember the truth: you’re not a bad person for genuinely not knowing better… you were just trying your best with the info you had at the time. What you do AFTER you know says a lot more about your character. 

Learn up. 

Exposing ourselves to a diverse range of voices helps us in so many ways, and discovering insensitivity in our own practice usually helps us reveal a gap. Take some time and fill in that gap and hear from actual members, so you can move forward with a better understanding. Knowing why specifically The Thing You Were Doing is culturally insensitive or appropriative is also super handy.

Apologize

Simple enough. If your actions messed with someone’s day, let them know you’re working to do better. If the harm was public, a public apology is often appreciated too. Just making right on anything wronged, basically. I’m also a fan of kinda “rebalancing” the universe and donating to a relevant nonprofit that supports the culture/otherwise supporting them in some way. Turn it into something good, yk? Lift people up. 

Reflect on the appeal. 

This is more for when it feels important to you in some way. It doesn’t need to be a huge internal journey, but it’s handy to touch on. What drew you to The Thing initially? Was it a useful witch tip you stumbled upon and nothing more? Does something about the structure of it really resonate with you? Or was the original culture just romanticized to have that mysterious and mystical feel? (Again, we’re imperfect humans.) Or was it something else? Getting an idea can help on deciding the next move.

Decide the next step. 

There’s three directions to go here (I love a good list.)

Refine- Sometimes something is only appropriative because of key details, like the terminology we use or a specific sacred plant/tool. So adjusting that properly means everyone goes home happy. 

Reach Out- Sometimes a path or practice is initiative, and cannot be properly accessed without going through the right channels. If this is the case and you really want to do The Thing properly, find your local people and get the ball rolling! Depending on the specific institution this can get very involved, so it’s up to you to decide how much work you’re willing to put in. If approaching it on their terms turns out not to be worth it for you, that’s fine, just proceed to the next step.

Replace- Sometimes a practice really is just closed to us, and that’s the end of it. Time to completely swap it out.This is why reflecting on the appeal can be helpful- it helps you find a suitable replacement by pinpointing exactly what you liked about it. Many open pracitces have the same appeal or similar, it may just take experimenting. Odds are you can find something that you vibe with and feel right at home in while still being socially conscious! 

So yeah, we’re all human, we make mistakes, but how we grow from those mistakes is what defines our character. Be nice to each other, everybody :)

Reminder that Hedge Witches are not Green Witches.

A Hedge Witch works with spirits, astral projection, dreams, travelling through alternate universes and dimensions, etc.

We are called Hedge witches because of the original Hedge witches living at the edge of town or the "hedge" and at the edge if the unknown outer world.

Hedge witches do tend to be solitary, but the name Hedge Witch does not mean Solitary witch inherently.

This isn't meant as an attack to anyone, just an attempt to educate baby witches and misinformed witches on what Hedge Witches are. Tags here on Tumblr, on Tiktok, on discord servers, etc tend to lump Hedge into Green or confuse the two and it causes a lot more confusion.

Metawork Vocabulary

These are some common / important words to know when working with energy, spirits, the astral, and/or etc. Note that these are our definitions, and they may vary based on others interpretations. For example, they may go by a different name. — Metaphysical : nonphysical, spiritual. Metawork : working with the metaphysical. Intuition : the ability to know something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. Meditation : a method used to achieve deep relaxation and calm, enabling the ability to work with the metaphysical in a much easier manner.  Sensing : the ability to be aware of metaphysical things using your mind. Visualization : the sensing process in which something is seen within your mind.  Energy : the strength, vitality and powering substance that enables anything to function, residing around and inside the thing itself. Living beings tend to have more energy than nonliving things.  Cleansing : the cleaning of energy, astral body, soul, mental body, physical body, and/or etc. Grounding : the gathering and centering of ones energy back to oneself. Warding : the action of creating metaphysical shields to protect something. Blockages : a clump of something, typically waste/negative energy, blocking the flow of energy in veins. Veins : metaphysical tubes in the body that pump energy to all parts needing it. Cores : the metaphysical source and so-called heart of one’s energy, that pumps the energy thru the veins Auras : the energy layers surrounding ones body. Lulls : when the body becomes stressed from certain amounts of metawork, it will shut down the ability to sense for periods of time, so the body may rest. Gathering : the gathering of energy together. Charging : the replenishing of energy. Storing : the storing of energy for later use. Casting : the use of energy. Spirits : metaphysical living beings Ghosts : metaphysical bodies that host the memories of a dead being, a shell of what a person was, that haunts a certain area, particularly the place of their death.  Parasites : metaphysical beings that feed solely off of other living beings Fae : a class of nature spirits that is typically categorized into either Seelie or Unseelie Angels : a high class metaphysical beings that humans know little about, typically perceived to be holy and pure. Demons : a high class of metaphysical beings that humans know little about, typically perceived to be unholy and evil. Deities: the highest known class of metaphysical beings, commonly perceived as Gods/Goddesses/etc  Thoughtforms : man-made spirits House Rules : the rules that one who works with spirits may set upon their living space, a list of morals that are expected to be respected and followed by the spirits that visit. Offerings : things offered to metaphysical beings as a gift, sometimes in exchange for something Symbolized Manifestations : when a spirit presents itself thru a physical thing that symbolizes itself often ; for example, a naga manifesting to their human friend as a snake on a regular basis Literal Manifesations : when a spirit manifests physically, which is rare ; the most common cases of this are light orbs, figures seen for a split second, etc. Another common manifestation is one that is not visible, but rather felt ; for example, the physical sensation of having ones hand held, even though no one is physically seen.  Conjuring : the act of inviting a metaphysical being into your space, and them arriving. Tethers : energy cords that connect things together, such as a spirit to an anchor. Vessel : a thing a metaphysical being could be kept inside, sometimes as an attempt to trap it.  Anchor : a thing a metaphysical being could be tethered to in order to communicate or bond better. Banishing : the act of forcefully removing a metaphysical being from an area, typically done when in danger. Divination : the practice of seeking and receiving knowledge thru spiritual means. Ouija Boards : a divination method in which a board with letters and numbers, and a planchette are used by two or more people to communicate with spirits. Pendulum : a divination method in which an object on the end of a string is used to answer yes or no questions, or to find lost things Tarot Cards : a divination method in which cards with individual meanings are shuffled, read and interpreted to answer questions Scrying : a divination method in which one receives answers in the form of visions by using things such as mirrors, water, tea, and/or etc Astral Body : your metaphysical body Astral Travel : the act of traveling to the astral realms with your astral body while still being conscious of your physical body. Astral Realms : the metaphysical realms on a plane that overlaps our own. Clow Reed’s Magic Circle spread

Every good witch needs a magic circle, whether it’s just casting it for fun or for some serious casting. So I thought, why not make a giant spread, so everyone can call up their own magic circle, and call forth their own clow spirits.

But just a word of warning, this is going to be a big spread, which means it’s going to require a lot of energy. So make sure you don’t overdo it, stop when you feel you need to.

Hi, thank you so much for doing free readings. I’m really struggling with my career path at the moment and don’t know whether to stay the course or think about doing something new. I’ve been doing the same thing for five years, and lately I feel like all signs are pointing towards trying something new. Any guidance? (Leo, 7)

There’s no further development to get from what you’re doing at the moment, and while sticking with it won’t be exactly a ‘bad’ decision, since it does provide more stability, it will leave you feeling empty of motivation and progress will be hard to achieve. As for trying something new, it won’t be all rosy, but the drawbacks won’t outweigh the benefit. Follow what calls to you and brings you joy without fear and you’ll feel lighter inside.
