Reading #2: The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction
Like photography and film, the computer has also revolutionized art
* The computer has allowed for the easy reproduction of art due to the many software programs and image sharing sites.
* New forms of art can be created with programs such as Illustrator and PhotoShop. No longer does one need to actually hold a real pencil or pastel; with just a click of the mouse, one can create a work of art and reproduce an exact replica of it. Of course with this new medium comes the question, Is this really art?
With the advent of the computer, everyone has become an author
* Through the creation of blogs, sites, and other forms of social media where one can actually vent and share their interests and concerns to the whole world instantly.
* No need for a publisher; everyone is free to post their ideologies and in return, others are free to respond, discuss, and critique.

Assignment #2 Individual Research on Contemporary Art & Artists
Micheal Kenna
“Alley of Trees”, Damyang, Jeollanamdo, South Korea, 2012

“French Canal, Study 2″, Loir-et-cher, France, 1993

Why I chose Micheal Kenna?
* For his very atmospheric, nature inspired landscapes, which literally make me want to get lost within them.
Formal Elements
* Value, through light and shadow and the colors black and white. Perspective of the trees receding into the distance. Focal point of “French Canal”. Organic shapes found only in nature, such as trees, branches, etc. Color, simple black and white tones. Emphasis on the grandeur of the trees.
Conceptual Elements
* The simplicity and spirituality found only in nature
How Kenna’s work may or may not relate to Digital Art...
* Kenna photography can be digitally manipulated in Photoshop
Robert Risko
“Cindy Lauper”, 1985

“Elvis Presley”, Unknown year

Why I chose Robert Risko?
* For his colorful, funny and illustrative caricatures of famous celebrities. In both works, he really captured the look of the famous figure and added a sense of humor.
Formal Elements
* Colors are very colorful, vibrant and harmonious. Lines are curvy and express movement and fluidity. Shapes are very organic and also express movement.
Conceptual Elements
* Comical depictions of famous celebrities that really capture their unique personality.
How Robert Risko’s work may or may not relate to Digital Art....
* Can be created in Illustrator
In your opinion, what is the role of contemporary art today?
* To continually push social boundaries and perceptions in order to build new ways of thinking and perceiving the world.
What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists works?
* With Micheal Kenna’s work, I can really relate to his depictions of trees in a snowy landscape. In addition, I really love nature and trees and paint these subjects too.
* As for Risko, his work strikes my funny bone. His choice of playful colors parallel with my lighter and playful side.
What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
* In kenna’s work, its definitely catching the essence, simplicity and almost mystical quality of the natural landscape. For Risko, its capturing the personalities of each celebrity in a comical fashion, through the use of vibrant colors and playful caricaturist forms.

Project #1: Create your own Logo/Avatar & Header

Header Image

Logo/Avatar Image
Screen Shot of Logo/Avatar
What elements of art & principles of design have you incorporated in your overall design?
Through different types of lines, I created the trees, branches, facial features, hair and snow.
For the trees and branches, I expressed them in a undulating type of movement.
Color, was used sparingly for simplicity of style.
Organic shapes, such as branches, trees and facial features were utilized.
Unity, is expressed through harmonic colors and shapes.
How will your newly customized online portfolio work with what you will be creating in Digital Art to further express your individuality?
It will remind me to create images that inspire and motivate me. For example, in this piece I used a music icon and a nature like theme that inspires and expresses who I’am.

Reading #1 Introduction from Digital Art by Christane Paul
When reading about the Fluxus movement and digital art, I could see the connections between the two.Through both mediums, viewers are invited to interact and manipulate the work in order to understand its intent/message, and or add to its significance.
In Digital Art:
* The audience either uses a mouse or uses the keyboard to engage with the art. For example, the google logo allows one, at a click of the mouse, to manipulate and explore its animations.
In Fluxus Art:
* For example, Yoko Ono’s, Fluxus performance piece, “Cut Piece”, where audience members cut a piece of Yoko’s dress.
When reading about the “World in 24 Hours”, I thought the piece paralleled the way digital art is now instantly exchanged, viewed, and interacted with.
Example:
*Millions across the world, all at the same time, can interact with the art.
* Sites, such as Pinterest, youtube, etc, allow users to share, download images and live stream videos instantly.
