Something Old: A classic or a longtime favourite

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

See, we run into an immediate problem. Almost all of my reading history is classics (I like modern as much as the next guy, I just don’t gravitate towards it as readily) so my pick is just gonna have to be my favorite book! Frankenstein!!! This fucking book haunts me. I think about it constantly. I have an original work that’s partially inspired BY IT so like I’m kind of obsessed with it. I know a lot of people had to read it in high school but like seriously if you never have or haven’t read it since then THEN PICK IT UPPPPPPP it’s so good!! (As you can see, I actually collect different publishings of it as well lol)

Arguably the ultimate story that asks the question of nature vs nurture. What it means to be man, what it means to be God, what it makes a man, and the cyclical nature of the human condition known as Ambition. Victor Frankenstein is a young and arguable genius out to prove a point that simply should not be proven and is surprised to find consequences. Love it. Great time. Huge fan.

Something New: What I'm currently reading and haven't finished

A tie between Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood and The Resurrectionist by A. Rae Dunlap

On a technicality, I’ve only somewhat started The Resurrectionist. But it was a book I actively chose. Problematic Summer Romance was loaned to me by a coworker because she knows I like an age gap- Yes, she has heard about the subject of my fics so she thought I’d at least get a hoot out of it. And I do! If you want a read that is more fun and light, it’s factually well written. There’s just little to no conflict so that’s not as interesting to me personally. I can’t fully recommend The Resurrectionist yet since I don’t even fully know what it’s about yet but PURELY BASED ON VIBE I think it’ll be more my speed so I’ll include it here for accuracy.

Something Borrowed: Recced by a friend or reading list

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio

This is actually a twofer in a sense! This book was recommended to me by my cousin and then I loved it and let my friend borrow it and I haven’t fucking seen it since-

For any of you who have seen me talk about literally anything, I fucking love Shakespeare. Like I said, I’m big into the classics and Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream was THE FIRST piece of literature to get me into reading as a kid. And this book is a pretty meta Shakespeare retelling that I really enjoy!

Following the story of Oliver Marks during his final year of college in the late 90, If We Were Villains retells the Shakespearean classic Julius Caesar as Oliver and his fellow 6 cast-mates perform Julius Caesar! Love, drama, crime, it’s just really got it all imo. Huge fan. I want my god damn book back, K.

Something Blue: Wild Card :)

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

I have very little to say because I have REPEATEDLY said that I enjoy the classics. I genuinely love the story of Lord of the Flies. I think it’s sadly quite misunderstood yet is so popular and has been picked apart to death. Like with my argument for Frankenstein, if you haven’t read this since school… give it another shot without a teacher forcibly telling you that it’s all about how society collapses without law and order. That isn’t the moral, not imo, and it deserves another read!

A tale of a loss of innocence brought upon by the weight of the world and societal expectations, a violent need to survive, and the ultimate corruption of the soul for power. It’s good!

Moloka'i by Alan Brennert is one of my long time favourites. I read it first when I was 11 - tbh a little too young - and reread it so many times afterwards. A heartbreaking historical fiction that follows Rachel Kalama, who contracts leprosy and is sent to Moloka'i. There are different povs from other characters we meet but it consistently follows her.

I've gotten a good chunk through Throne of Glass but I started reading it in January

Something Borrowed: Recced by a friend or reading list

I wanna say it was back in 2022 that I saw this book on 2 different reading lists. The first one was Female Rage and the second one was a list of books written by WOC

So good. The Main Character is a badass and the way the author describes settings is hella immersive. It's a Science Fiction mixed with Fantasy mixed with Chinese Culture. I need to read this again.

Snippet Saturday

Because I’m feeling frisky and about to fall off the face of the earth (work next week is gonna be insane. Pray for me)! But we’ll live. So I’ll share ANOTHER snippet from my modern AU called Blood Sugar!

Chapter 16: Like Sugar Water In The Mouth

“Would you become one if you could? A Lich Lord.”

The question tumbled out, and regret burned at the tips of her ears almost instantly. But Emmrich seemed unperturbed by it and the self-confused tone she’d used to utter it. He turned them down another path, making her realize just how much she hadn’t been paying attention to where he’d guided her. Simply trusting him. How strange.

“If afforded the opportunity, I can’t say I’d squander it.”

“Oh…” Maybe that was why she was scared to ask. She already knew the answer yet hoped for another. Subconsciously.

“It is far out of practice now, I’m afraid. But I believe the sentiment behind it is undeniably poetic. To live beyond oneself. Eternal. Never forgotten.”

“Everyone is forgotten eventually, Emmrich.”

“Not them. Even those whose remains are lost to time, we know their names and commemorate them appropriately. We know their purpose, some aspects of their lives.”

“Not all of them.” She argued. “Your Hand of Glory. They’re unknown, aren’t they?”

“Hopefully not for much longer.”

“And even still, all those Lich Lords, if you wanted my opinion then I’d say they’re forgotten too. You might know their names, which organ dissection made which discovery. Epiphany after epiphany. But you don’t know them, at least not entirely. They’re less of people and more concepts at that point. That just seems so… empty.” Bringing her out of her ramble of thoughts was a hushed chuckle coming from her companion. “Shit, I did it again-”

“You are quite alright, Dear. I took no offense. I told you before, I find your perspective on my culture rather fascinating because you earnestly consider it. You merely said something rather poignant without meaning to.” The last statement made her raise a brow. But before she could look deeper into it, he continued. “You do have a fair point, I will say. It would not be my first choice, even if it was available to me. The Rites of Lichdom are, at their core, about a shedding of the self. And I often wonder how those with such earthly attachments could bear to deny themselves. So that is to say, if I was presented with both The Rites and its more romantic antithesis, I don’t think I’d be able to give myself to Lichdom.”

Emmrich’s pace began to ease, and Rook fell into it on instinct. Slower and slower. “I think you might have lost me at ‘romantic antithesis’.”

Currently watching: fucking trick as question here cuz technically nothing! I have a million anime to get caught up on and start but I’m probably going to do a RWBY rewatch sooner cuz I’m cringe (Vol 10 greenlit my bbg I miss you)

Currently craving: Jalapeñossssss. Last night I had a spicy pepperoni pizza with them and chili oil and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Need.

Tea or coffee: COFFEE- like, I’m a chronic coffee drinker. It’s what I drink to fucking relax like a freak. I drink cold brew every day (fuck load of caffeine) and to calm down sometimes after 3pm I’ll do a latte (less caffeine and therefore calm). I actually don’t like tea very much 😅 I wish I did! Masala chai is the only tea drink I could have and be pleased with and even then I’m picky as hell cuz if it’s too sweet I’ll yarf
