Me, while reading The Lord of the Rings: So, are we ever going to learn what the deal is with Gandalf and the other wizards? Tolkien: How do you mean? Me: Well, they're clearly very long lived, they came from over the sea many ages ago, Gandalf at least can do magic; so what exactly are they? Are they Elves, are they Men, are they something else? Tolkien: Angels. Me: Ah, okay. Me: ... Me: ......what. Tolkien: They're angels in human form. Me: What? Tolkien: And Sauron is also an angel. Me: What??? Tolkien: Maybe I should have expanded upon that in the main trilogy? Me: You could have stood to mention it a little more, yes.
#fr#i asked my dad wth the wizards are when he first got me into lotr#he was like ‘they’re wizards’#like ok dad but where do they come from#years later i finally learned more. learned about ainur and it finally Made Sense

I think about her a lot now.
She had short, curly red hair; her name was Debbie, and we called her Joker. She was immediately recognizable, and always helping.
As far back as I can remember, she was there at Pathfinder events. She was in another club. I hardly ever saw her, but the impression I had of her was a kind, funny girl, much older than me, always helping in the background.
Later, she was a friend and no more, or perhaps a good acquaintance and no less. I spent more time at events close to her, as I was getting older and more able to do the things that she already did. Some of her friends were people I know well. Most of her friends were people I will never meet. I never really thought about her before but as a fellow Pathfinder, someone I could talk to if I needed help with something, someone who would always share a piece of her life with whoever was nearby.
She’s gone now.
She died in a hospital, in the midst of a pandemic.
Why do I think about her so much now? I don’t particularly miss her. I know her friends do, and I know the world is a little smaller without her. I’m not angry that she’s gone. That’s why. Because she didn’t mean very much to me, nor I to her. I thought she would always be somewhere, and I enjoyed her company. And now she’s gone, cut short the life that gave and promised so much good to others.
This was a person who affected many lives. When she died, there was no hole left in my own. That fact in itself leaves an ache.
#what’s that poem that says how streets get shorter when people die#how can such a vibrant person just… cease#someone’s world got turned upside down and I only know about it because our parents have a good mutual friend#I think about her more now than when I knew her#my faith says I’ll see her again some day#I’m not sure how that changes it. genuinely not sure.#I wonder if there’s a word for this.
