MOMENTUM Residency Program
38 posts
The MOMENTUM Residency Program is designed to further the enquiry into the nature and relevance of time-based art. By inviting artists and curators who work in a variety of time-based media, we aim to facilitate the discussion and exploration of continuously shifting notions regarding the significance of time-based art. MOMENTUM’s goal in enabling both practice and research is to complement what is often an exclusively theory-based discussion within academia with the more visceral kind of experience that art affords. In this sense, the MOMENTUM Residency is a space for intrinsically process-based research. Its focus is thereby to bridge the gap between theory and practice. MOMENTUM offers a process-based Residency, wherein artists have the space to determine their method and work-plan as motivated by the demands of their research, rather than by any deadlines or other external pressure to render artistic results. MOMENTUM AiR affords artists a period of at least 3 months for reflection and creation after the Residency, which will ultimately result in new work, to be considered for inclusion in a biennial AiR Exhibition, featuring a curatorial selection of works generated through the Residency. The AiR Exhibitions focus on the central concern of the Residency: artistic research into the nature and relevance of time-based art. The MOMENTUM AiR program will result in a dynamic archive of the creative exploration and the knowledge gained and shared through the experiences of the AiR Residents.

MOMENTUM is proud to celebrate TBOE the one-year-long project "The Body of Energy (of the mind)": A trip across Europe from the Arctic to Gibraltar looking for energy - immaterial, intangible. Using an infrared camera as symbolic energy keeper, Cagol makes visible the invisible, charting the traces that we are leaving with our passage through space, nature, architecture. Stefano Cagol is MOMENTUM's Artist -in-Residency Nov 1st -Jan 1st, thanks to the support of the VISIT Programme of the RWE Stiftung für Energie und Gesellschaft. http://momentumworldwide.org/momentum-artist-residencies/current/#stephan WHAT ELSE: Stefano Cagol, TBOE, solo show at CLB Berlin Collaboratorium Aufbau Haus am Moritzplatz, corner Oranienstrasse, XBerg Tue-Sun 15.00-19.00 Finissage: Saturday, 12 December @ 18.00-21.00 http://www.c60collaboratorium.de/veranstaltung/stefano-cagol-the-body-of-energy-of-the-mind.html Stefano Cagol is an Italian-born artist. Congratulations to Geraldine Ondrizek on her installation and presentation of her research on the origins of biometric data at the Max Plank Institute during her Artist Residency at MOMENTUM. The Open Studio continues until 15 December by appointment. MORE INFO:https://www.facebook.com/events/177754479230681/

More About MOMENTUM AiR: http://momentumworldwide.org/momentum-artist-residencies/…/…
Geraldine Ondrizek is an artist and professor of art at Reed College in Portland Oregon working at the intersection of art and biological science for the last twenty years. In 2014 Ondrizek was awarded both a Ford Foundation grant and a year sabbatical from Reed College for 2015-16 to continue her research-based artwork on the visualization of genetics and eugenics. She is Artist-in-Residence at MOMENTUM from 15 August to 15 Decemebr 2015, having come to Berlin to access the Max Plank Archive of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute.
Ondrizek’s research at the archives of the Max Planck Institute focus on the work of Dr. Georg Geipel, an anthropologist and statistician who worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin from 1930 -1960. Geipel used methods of dermatoglyphics and dactyloscopy for the study of fingerprints and handprints to link these patterns to inheritance. This sytem was not new, in fact Widler used it beginning in 1904. However Geipel rigorously assigned mathematical coordinates to the lines, curves, breaks, negative spaces and intersections in the hand and fingerprint. Through these measurements he was able to identify inherited hand lines, similarities in identical twins based on embryology and racial difference. Although his ability to identify genetic inheritance was significant, his evaluation and conclusions based on racial difference and mental ability done for the KWI during the war were both incorrect and seriously problematic.(1) However, he did continue to refine his mathematical identification systems after the war and was able to mathematically prove that these marks are unique for each of us and that they are carried within family lines. His system, which primarily measures the breaks and intersections of the lines in the fingerprint and handprint, is used in biometric data scanners today.
The history of biometric data skips the 1930’s-50’s because of the negative associations. However, the effects of taking biometric data then, and the effects of taking it now, as a method of surveillance and identity codes for each human being, is hauntingly similar.
Focusing on handprint studies of identical twins from the 1950’s-60’s, the research and art work Ondrizek is doing here in Berlin during the MOMENTUM residency manifests in a series of studio projects to be shown at an Open Studio event on 29 November 2015, and will be comprised of a set of books of the handprints and the geometric patterns used, a video of the archive as well as experiments and proposals for works to be done in the US in 2016-2017. The research done in Berlin will be further developed once Ondrizek returns to the US and will include her own biometric and genetic profile.

MOMENTUM AiR Stefano Cagol’s exhibition “The Body of Energy” at CLB Collaboratorium Berlin continues:
Tuesday - Sunday, 3.00 pm - 7.00 pm. CLB Berlin - Aufbau Haus - Prinzenstr. 84.2 - Berlin Kreuberg.
Supported by VISIT Programme of the RWE Stiftung für Energie und Gesellschaft gGmbH, the exhibition “The Body of Energy (of the mind)” at CLB Collaboratorium Berlin and the MOMENTUM Residency is the culmination of a year-long project the artist has developed as a European expedition from Norway to Gibraltar on search for signs of energy, both physical and cultural energy, triggering a reflection on what is not visible, on resources, on relations. The show spans from the experience of the travelling project, through video, photo and installation, to new artworks created in Berlin.

Almost everything is ready for MOMENTUM AiR Linda Carrara’s Open Studio. Linda will show her work in progress, and her research process throughout her residency at MOMENTUM!
Saturday, November 7, 6pm at Centrum, Reuterstrasse 7, Neukolln
https://www.facebook.com/events/1685907165029441/
Linda Carrara challenges herself to create more than a painting and succeeds in doing so. She is more intrigued by the work in progress than the great beauty of a finished artwork. Through her simplicity, minimalism and geometric aesthetic she explores new environments, new dimensions. By using a mixture of materials and layers, her artwork can take you out of your comfort zone as a viewer. Once you detect the architectural site on her canvas, you can see a door to another dimension and from then on you are free to let your mind travel.
Light has a prominent role in her work and is an essential part of the painting. Linda inserts the light not artificially but as a color, a tint, a substantial factor which alters and enriches the canvas as an object as well as the painting on it. Imitating light, imitating forms, imitating materials.

Terna Prize winner Linda Carrara -Italian visual artist- will present her work-in-progress for her Artist Residency at MOMENTUM, in an Open Studio, at Centrum, Reuterstrasse 7, Neukölln THIS SATURDAY at 6pm.
Linda in her Residency explores the question of projection of light on canvas, and analyzes the relationship between the shadow and light of the canvas, the relation with the space that surrounds it and the enigma between the projection of light and light of the painting.
