I have a theory that Jay's invention during his first meeting with Wu was wings for a reason.

Jay is a child who grew up under the strong care of Ed and Edna, and, as I think, he actually had no personal space, as well as attempts at self-realization or self-expression. His parents loved and supported him, but they "built walls of guardianship" that prevented Jay from revealing himself. Wings are not just an attempt to take off, but a symbol of freedom, which Jay coveted but did not receive in childhood.

That's why he was so fired up when Sensei Wu said that he was just as much a dreamer as Jay. That's why Jay agreed, because he realized that this was his chance to be free of custody, a chance to show himself and his talents.
