Elaine tapped her foot as she eyed the plastic container she held in her hand in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Roasted butternut squash, red quinoa, and wheatberry salad; it had almonds, cranberries, and a honey sesame vinaigrette to boot. She felt a little, legitimate thrill. The first she felt it that day. It seemed she found a winner. Now all she needed next was a bottle of coconut water. They were usually situated right by the salads, but it only took a quick glance to see they weren’t there. Either gone forever or temporarily sold out. Elaine sighed.

“Fantastic,” she half-muttered to herself. The employees at Trader Joe’s seemed to have an obsession with constantly reorganizing their products, and the Trader Joe’s corporation was, in its own right, addicted to constantly discontinuing things. Could she have one, simple constant in her life that she enjoyed? Like, for example, the single bottles of organic coconut water? Made from the Nam Hom variety grown in Thailand’s Ratchaburi Province?

It was then that she noticed the person to her right with a bottle of a pinkish liquid in their hand, either vaguely contemplating the purchase or admiring their find. She couldn’t quite tell through the sudden burst of determination that struck her. Her back straightened. “Hello,” she started abruptly, then paused. She tried to soften her tone and expression, without much luck, then gestured to the bottle in the person’s hands. “It’s a shame they don’t sell those in cases, don’t you think?”

Zoe recently moved back in with her parents and younger sister Erin, after the sudden and unexpected accidental death of her partner.

It’s her first time living in Monterey since high school.

She was working as a P.E. teacher in Pasadena but was ‘asked’ to take voluntary bereavement leave after she yelled at a student and had a breakdown at school.

Now living with her family in  Monterey, she is looking for work despite everybody telling her to just take it easy for a while.

Unfortunately Zoe doesn’t really know the meaning of taking it easy.

Her partner’s death was officially considered an accident and no autopsy was performed but she often lies awake at night wondering if it was an accident, whether he wanted to die or was ambivalent about dying. 

She attends regular grief therapy sessions to help with this.

She is extremely argumentative and uncompromising and her younger sister Erin cops the brunt of this. 

She also thinks Erin is pretty incompetent when it comes to essentially anything but despite this, Zoe would knock somebody’s teeth out for talking shit about her sister.

She’s hoping to make some friends outside of the sad sacks she occasionally exchanges small talk with after grief counselling but is at least somewhat self aware and knows that she’s not offering a very attractive package right now.

OPEN TO ANY  where: along a cliff / beach / shoreline somewhere when: late afternoon

DSLR resting in his palms, the day had been long and full of absolute fuck-heads, in his opinion. Adam hadn’t the time or patience to hang around at the shop after his last No Show of the day, so with a six-pack in his truck and his equipment in tow, he headed to one of the penninsulas for a little solo debrief. He thought he’d score a few golden hour shots along the rocky edge, crack a beer and smoke something angry out of his system. But as he went to take a photo of yet another shoreline on another afternoon, he heard something up-wind that piqued his attention.

He knew there were plenty of walkways along the bay line, tourist lookouts, and little hideout nooks you could secretly fit someone between your legs and it could have been anyone minding their own business. Still, though, it was an odd sound, not one he could explain, so with a few downward steps towards the beach he rounded the edge of a jaggardy rock wall to investigate. “He - ello?” He broke the call into two, peering around for the culprit. “Hey, uh — I’m not lookin’ to scare or be scared so…” His fist tightened immediately around his gear. Right, like that was a macho thing to say to scare off any potential Boogeymen. Still, he didn’t like jump-scares.

Although the ghosts of Gwen’s past would likely argue the point, she was trying to do better. Although she still was a clear control freak, not a single hair out of place, and had to count her breathing sometimes just to prevent her from directing her Mercedes through a local shop front at any given inconvenience — she was�� better. Some days. In fact, a prime example of her curbing alignment was the fact that somehow, her expensive cardigan that she’d removed only for a second for a photo was now draped under the feet of a bystander and getting tangled between shoes and chair legs. Of course, it sent her nerves through the fucking ornate ceiling, and that would be assured by the icy glare she gave them before yanking it back into her posession before storming off. However, a pause later, she realized that it was only the begining to a very long evening and it wasn’t just her own reputation at stake here, but also her husband’s. A chronic reminder that, although rare, sometimes the world wasn’t entirely hers with other people living in it, but sometimes it had to be his too.

“Sorry.” The word felt unnatural and forced, but in her defence, she was still practicing it. “Long day.” She informed with an impatient huff, snagging a small plate from a cocktail table just nearby on her return and forcing it towards the bystandar. “Here, try the canapés.” If she was lucky, maybe they’d choke on them.

open starter where: aquarium re-opening event when: going into the evening 

riley could count on one hand the amount of nights she had free from work or other obligations this month, so even though she didn’t quite feel like she belonged at events like this, she was going to enjoy having a night off. which was why when 6 o’clock hit and the event moved to the adults only cocktail evening, avery went home with her nanny and riley was going to take advantage of being able to have some adult conversations that didn’t revolve around work, or pta, or who was in charge of picking up which kid from school. though she was sure that it wouldn’t take too long for it to reach that point. either way, she was going to drink. going to the bar, riley looked over the list of cocktails. “do you ever wonder who comes up with the names for these drinks? is it someone’s job to sit around and think of fish themed names? at least they kept sex on the beach the same. that’s always a classic.” she spoke absentmindedly to the person next to her at the bar.

MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM GRAND RE-OPENING TONIGHT!

For the last four and a half months, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been under construction while undergoing Government funded renovations managed by local developers, Pelican Projects.

Today, the beloved aquarium will be re-opening its doors to showcase its wonderful new main entrance, ocean science center and The Reef, a sustainable, fair-trade plant based restaurant and bar.

The aquarium will be free-of-charge all weekend, opening at 11 am and closing at 5 pm.

At 6 pm on Saturday night, The Reef will be hosting a special celebratory cocktail evening which will be for persons aged 16+ from 9 pm.

OOC: This will be a soft launch event for all of our current characters. Everyone is invited to explore the aquarium and join in on the catered event afterward. No major plot points will occur during this event, it's just an icebreaker to get everybody warmed up on the dash!
