data: Hi Alex McLean aka yaxu, creator of TidalCycles! What are you up to?

yaxu: I'm on the way home to the Socialist Republic after a weekend in a small dark room with a lot of speakers in Deptford listening to algorithmic patterns with some new friends. How are you doing?

data: I’m doing really good! I’m glad I can finally ask you things. Like, how much live code have you live coded?

yaxu: Quite a lot but I can't remember very much of it and didn't save much so it doesn't matter. I just found this in my editor though which is proof that I have live coded something:

data: How much have animals influenced your music and your software? You have a cat right?

yaxu: Yes actually I have two cats, Douglas and Stanley, they tell me what to do but don't really get involved in my code. I did once live code for a cat but it was already asleep.

I guess cats do have a lot of important procedures though and procedures are the basis of software engineering. I think live coding is not much to do with software engineering any more though.

data: How did Tidal come about?

yaxu: I wanted to free improvise with a percussionist friend and it was too slow to respond to him in existing scripting languages, I had to type in too much code to make each change. I got interested in how Bernard Bel was notating tabla rhythms and started experimenting with making a live coding language based on cyclic pattern. After a lot of performances with half-written software that eventually became Tidal, which is now mostly written and I can now make a change in a few seconds. Not as fast as a percussionist but it's OK.

data: Would you rather make closed source software or be immortal? Those are the two things I think you might hate the most.

yaxu: I'd like to try out being immortal for a short while. I make closed source software all the time I just keep it to myself.

Bob: Is Kane West your real name, or did you borrow it from the cover of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars?

Kane: both. its my real name but its a ziggy ref. my mums a big ziggy fan. the whole marley clan actually.

Bob: Is it true that you have chips, baked beans and poppers on your rider?

Kane: not true, not true. ive never heard that before. that's a fake rider. you shouldn't believe everything you read bob.

Bob: Do you know why Mr Fingers was called Mr Fingers?

Kane: according to bill brewster its because he had fingers plural. and it was heards way of saying he was an everyman, because many people have more than one finger. the whole point of fingers inc was that it was several band-members = many fingers - like a factory. similar to the american tradition of naming family restaurant franchises after factories (cheesecake factory, pizza corp, dennys). its all about chicago, detroit, the mid-west, the motor industry, etc.

Bob: Do you have any beautiful dark twisted fantasies?

Kane: dont we all bob dont we all. but what about the ugly light straightened-out realities. or are they the same thing? someone should make a record about that.

Bob: How are you planning to spend Christmas?

Kane: same as i spend christmas every year. same as i spend every single day of my life. in the club.

It’s GFOTY and SPINEE...

GFOTY: why are cows called bovines? do you ever stop to think whats going on with crabsticks?

SPINEE: bovines aren't just cows its also means like buffalo and YAK they all look and act the same but in slightly different versions. bovine sounds like devine and cows/ buffalos/yak are pretty devine -crabsticks --- i've never really thought about them and now i am thinking about them i don't really want to know how they're made

GFOTY: whats my best feature and why are you so fucking obsessed with it?

SPINEE: ultimately its your insatiable appetite to throw a great party ie our upcoming night at STYX on MAY 26TH (plug plug plug) but aside from that i'd say your eyes. i realised recently i get on very well with people who have crazy blue shark eyes. being jealous of that eye colour is probably the main reason

GFOTY: hi spinee!! tell me a fun fact about the current climate change issues please!!

SPINEE: everyone should recycle its so easy. also there was an episode of wife swap once where 1 family were proper environmentalists and they never flushed their toilet if they went for a wee. they had a sign in their bathroom saying 'if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down' i think about that sometimes and i don't know if i'd ever go to those extremes let alone show off about it on tv

GFOTY: i heard youre a vegetarian but if you were to eat meat which one would it be?

SPINEE: probably like a snake or a similar animal with a nasty attitude. i would NEVER eat a lobster that is the ultimate evil in my eyes

GFOTY: you one famously saw pete doherty live- was it a cool experience? how excited are you for our club night? oh btw this is a great track

SPINEE: i lost my mood ring in the toilets, we sat on the side of the stage speakers for the last song and eventually shared some sweet chilli crisps with the main man himself and all of that was the coolest thing ever in my 15 year old brain but it makes me feel a lil bit empty thinking about it now. LOL --- im extremely excited for our night !!!! i adore each artist on the line up its going to be bloody amazing

Danny versus felicita...

Danny: OK so this remix is complete nonsense, what are you even trying to do?

felicita: To quote something you said in a recent interview, which I liked and agree with: ‘the way in which music is performed is largely uninteresting, just as long as it SOUNDS amazing...’

I decided at the outset of felicita that I would only do remixes if they were very occasional, for ‘big’ or ‘mainstream’ artists, and then only if I could take them wherever I feel like.

Danny: Why does your music never settle into a regular rhythm or anything? I can’t follow it.

felicita: I’m gonna answer this question with a series of questions:

Why is your music so painfully generic?

Is it born of a blinkered and pre-failed attempt at a kind of ‘cultural universalism’, which you pursue through your patrician notion of ‘Pop’ music?

Do you regard difference and formal invention as anathema to ‘the mainstream’, which you pledge allegiance to, albeit to an outdated version, which you are desperately trying to force back to life, like trying to administer CPR to a 3310, in the hope that your music actually becomes ‘Pop’ music, though you know it never will, cannot be, because no-one listens to or cares about N Sync anymore?

Danny: My five year old niece could your make music tbh?

felicita: I’d like to see him try.

Danny: Do you feel guilty about anything and do you ever harbour secrets?

felicita: Both, all the time. Secrets are Sexy.

Danny: Why are you signed to PC Music ?

felicita: Good question. Because I believe in Pop music..

Danny: Do you like stand-up comedy? Because your music is a joke.

felicita: I don’t need stand-up comedy.....people are funny enough already.

Danny: Do you like Miley Cyrus single ‘Malibu’? What would you say to her about it?

felicita: Three thousand ninety Li farther southeast, then northeast, stands Departing Doves Mountain.

On its heights are many mulberry trees.

There is a bird dwelling here whose form resembles a crow, with a patterned head, white beak, and red feet.

It is called Jingwei and makes a sound like its name.

Jingwei was once a human named Nüwa.

Nüwa was swimming in the Eastern Sea when she was unable to return to shore and drowned.

She transformed into the Spirit-Guardian Jingwei.

All day she collects twigs and stones from the Western Mountains, and carries them in her beak, to fill up the Eastern Sea.

The Zhang River emanates from here and flows eastward into the Yellow River.
