was reading a 1950s detective book that jokingly referenced the fact it was illegal to use profanity over the telephone. my initial reaction was "kinda wild but makes sense given the history of overreaching obscenity laws"

Monkey Wrench theory: how Shrike’s species went extinct

Maybe this theory is a stretch but I just made a connection.

Point 1: Shrike is canonically a squid-like alien; he has tentacles like a squid and has been compared to a squid in and outside of the show.

Point 2: Shrike is canonically the last of his species. He’s referred to as an endling in episode four.

Point 3: Interestingly, the fuel that supports space travel is referred to as ink

Here’s my theory: The ink that powers ships was harvested from Shrike’s species to the point of near-extinction (with Shrike only having survived by joining the Reds).

Point in case:

The Lythops were hunted into near-extinction because their bodies can be turned into metal alloy and their crystals, indestructible blades: they were killed in order for their bodies to be harvested for resources.

Punti is the sole survivor of this incident, and when Beebs worries about what’ll happen to him, Shrike says this:

This implies this is what happened to Shrike as well; he was an endling and LAW found him when he was alone and gave him a job.

If the lythops were hunted into extinction for resources whose to say the same didn’t happen with the squid species?

When asked how similar Shrike is biologically to a squid the monkey wrench tumblr didn’t answer so his biology *is* going to be important.

Perhaps he *can* biologically create ink (but doesn’t know) and that was the reason his species became extinct, because they were killed in order to create a universal fuel for space travel.

I wish the youtubers that do breakdowns and analyses of other indie shows also turned their eyes on Monkey Wrench. That show is BEGGING to be taken apart piece by piece and obsessed over under a microscope.
