how i see severus snape

the half-blood prince

born on january 9th, 1960

of the snape and prince families (related to the blacks and averys through his mum, though eileen was disowned for marrying a muggle)

grew up at spinner's end in cokesworth, a small mining town in england, alongside lily and petunia evans

his dad is an abusive piece of shit who constantly berated severus for everything, while his mother was neglectful as she dealt with tobias' abuse as well as her own mental health issues (catatonic depression)

best class was potions, though he excelled at creating hexes

grew up severely malnourished, which impacted his growth. his greasy hair for which he is teased mostly comes from him never properly learning how to wash his hair

became fascinated with the history of the prince family and researched them heavily. was enamoured by their supposed descent from merlin and salazar slytherin and worshipped them

struggled socially for many years. as a child, his only friend was lily, but after they fell out, he was sort of gathered up by a new group of friends, though he always felt like a bit of an outsider there too

his friend group was neil avery jr, milton mulciber, charity burbage, aurora sinistra, juliette wilkes, and evan rosier. people found him creepy and off-putting, but very shrewd and intelligent. he doesn't really mind, as he doesn't believe most of them to be worthy of his undivided attention

one of the only people who saw value in him as a young person at hogwarts was lucius malfoy, who is included in his short list of people he is deeply and unhealthily attached to

was bullied by the marauders for much of his time at hogwarts, to which he built up a resentment and attempted to hurt them in return

was injured during "the prank" and sworn to secrecy about remus' secret, though he wanted nothing more than to reveal it

in love with lily evans since they were kids. he was distraught when she was sorted into gryffindor and tried very hard to hang onto her until fifth year, when he called her a mudblood after she stood up to james. since then, they didn't speak outside of his attempted apologies

can understand parseltongue but cannot speak it. his mother used to talk to him in parseltongue when he was little (one of the few things they shared outside of his dad's influence) and he tried to learn it as a teenager but never could. it's part of why he resents his dad and half-blood status. nobody knows about this, not even voldemort

has a deep mistrust of authority figures

is a narrative foil to dorcas meadowes: both have mentally ill mothers, suffer from neglect as children, and have deeply ingrained attachment and trust issues. however, while dorcas has alastor moody watching over her, able to provide her with parental love and safety, severus is neglected by parental/authority figures, and thus has warped attachments to people his age whom he believes are the only people who can love him, namely lily and his friend group (particularly charity and milton), while also maintaining his power and upper hand as to never become the bullied again

because of his caretaking for his mother from a young age, severus has a strange fascination with the ill and dying, but unlike evan, it isn't out of a desire to experiment or reanimate corpses, but rather because severus understands love through almost obsessive observance (akin to stalking). he won't help the ill or dying, but it gives him power to know that he can hurt them and they cannot hurt him; he is the powerful one and can do as he wishes rather than being the victim (to his father's abuse)

spent much of his time as the "half-blood prince", altering potions recipes and creating spells and hexes. his textbooks, particularly his potions book, were his prized possessions and he let very few look at them

deep inferiority complex paired with a sense of grandeur

only charity, lily, and milton have been permitted to call him sev or sevvy.

has a terrible threshold for temperature, because of his ill-fitting and shabby clothes he often gets very sick or even hypothermia in the winter because he just doesn't notice he's cold

okay i just saw that one ask about different school hcs and post-grad stuff and wanted to add that ive read a few fics where they have post-grad stuff for healing (“healing training” or whatever) but what i RLLY want is healing work that doesnt necessarily involve st mungos if that makes sense? give me more than just that one hospital pls!! give me research opportunities!! give me potioneer & healer collaborations and smaller pockets of healers that defected from larger medical institutions in order to treat the werewolf population better in their own way!!

ooh yes that's actually so interesting! i feel like in britain, the werewolf thing would happen post second wizarding war (save for like tiny tiny pockets), but like we're severely lacking in potioneer/healer combos. like, who makes the salves and potions the healers use? there's got to be a lucrative business in there for sure (hey, maybe i can work with this? we do know two healers lol). also, are there specific streams that healers can go into? i mean like if there's a healer for curses, a healer for splinches, a healer for failed transfigurations, you name it. that would be so interesting, if different healers specialized in different like modes of healing. ooh, now i'm going to go down a rabbit hole of thinking about this!

I saw your post about different school headcannons AND AH YESSS.

So personally, I feel like depending on the country, they'll be multiple schools obviously, or not if it's a smaller country (population sizes and whatever), but these are establishments and regimented and stuff.

I feel like it'd be fun to explore smaller pockets than don't particularly like the government and essentially have the equivalent of home schooling in small groups. Like, if Cornwall witches and wizards told the rest of Mainland England to Fuck Off or if the main Purebloods have a little group tutoring circle.

And so it's a bit more of a shock when certain people go to a certain school: this part fits more with golden trio era and people being like which school will The Harry Potter go to, but could work for the Black Cousins, Beuxbatons or Hogwarts debate.

Also. POST GRAD? you expect me to think BRITAIN caps it at 7 years? As an immigrant in London (I've been here for 15 years get me out /j) BLASPHEMY. give me post hogwarts training programmes other than the fucking aurors.

Like. Miss Kathleen doesn't actually get how education works its mad. (SHE also doesn't get how population sizes work. Like, if magic people are hidden from muggles, they wouldn't count as part of the total population? We can choose how many magic people exist? ooh yes, i love the idea of small pockets rejecting like the "mainstream" big schools and doing their own thing! that's sort of my feeling towards how quebec (where i'm from) manages schooling outside of ilvermorny (because there's no way the french kids are going to the us to learn in english lmao). there was so much room for interesting schools and shit but of course joanne sucks ass and is stupid and dumb.

post grad! i actually didn't even think about options for post grad besides aurors, except for like an ancient runes class that takes like eight students post hogwarts lol. it would be so fascinating if they had, like, wizard unis and shit. literally just take any modern muggle university au and stick that in here and it could work. i'm now a little obsessed with this idea thank you sm xx

some more fun facts about the pureblood wizarding families

a lot of the pureblood families that we know about are because of the eurocentric (and specifically british and french) influence on the series and worldbuilding (fuck jkr), but also because different cultures have different standards of blood purity or even eschew that notion altogether

the trelawney family emerged in the 1500s in cornwall, following the emigration of a greek merchant to the area. since then, the family has held these ties in great esteem, continuing to practice traditional greek polytheism and worship of the pantheon

they also have the sight, which tends to skip three or four generations at a time. as such, they primarily worship apollo, god of prophecy

the ollivanders are the primary provider of wands to hogwarts students, due to gaiseric ollivander's relationship with rowena ravenclaw around the founding of the school

the bones family is predominantly polish in origin (though the current branch is polish/mongolian), and is one of several pureblood families to be considered "ministry-bound", aka that most of their descendants will end up working in the ministry (like the pettigrews or the mulcibers). this conception usually isn't complimentary, as it assumes low-level jobs rather than high-level jobs (reserved for the "higher" pureblood families)

the abbotts and the fawleys hold less political sway in britain than they do across pockets in east and south asia, though their roles are traditionally as diplomats for those countries to the british ministry for magic (hence why they continue to use anglicized surnames)

the burkes are credited with the founding of knockturn alley as well as borgin and burkes. though not as flashy, their entrepreneurial skills give them a good reputation among pureblood circles, often funding their allies and buying support in the ministry

similarly, the notts own a number of shops on diagon alley, though secretly as to not stir attention, allowing them to accrue wealth quickly and quietly

the notts hold a deep fascination with genealogy and have records going back centuries, which are kept hidden from the public. often, they gain leverage by twisting the contents of these records, sending other families into turmoil trying to preserve their reputations while the notts just sit back and profit from the chaos (ie the sacred twenty eight list)

the carrows, though attempting to be self-suficient and gaining power, often find themselves in debt to other families due to poor decision making. this is the case with alexei carrow (father of alecto and amycus), who found himself in debt to and exploited by abraxas malfoy after alexei was caught trying to fuck over abraxas on an important ministry affair. this debt continued after abraxas' death, with his son lucius continuing it to piggyback off of the carrows' labour. it's sort of an open secret among the top pureblood families that the carrows are political flip-floppers and backstabbers, but also idiots)

on that point, the most powerful pureblood families have gained their prestige on the backs of many other families, leveraging their wealth and power to stay at the top while other families are lower on the hierarchy and have to work extra hard to assert themselves, though maintaining a little more privilege than muggleborns (wow sounds like the real world, funny how that works).

there are many pureblood families in britain, actually, but those that are less talked about or considered prestigious are mostly ones not named on the sacred twenty eight or who do not play much of a role in wizarding politics (or, they're considered offshoots of bigger pureblood families: it was common in the late 1800s for branches of powerful families to split and rename themselves in order to gain more leverage for the actual family name, like the snydes from the malfoys or the sinistras from the sterlings)

the sterlings (on the sacred twenty eight, they're known as the 'shacklebolts' because jkr sucks balls and also the notts are... not kind people) are an academic family, believed to be descended from one of the founders of uagadou. they can be credited with bringing spagyric/plant alchemy to britain, though its teaching remains more popular at uagadou. they're very politically savvy but know how to stay out of the limelight until conditions are right for their pursuits. many of the sons over the last fifty years, including kingsley and his brother roman, have aspired to the position of minister of magic, though have as of yet fallen short

all pureblood families have sigils of animals, though many have lost that information (smaller families don't use the sigils much anymore). this generally influences the family's patronuses [maybe i'll make a whole post on this if y'all are curious/when i flesh this out even more]

though the "prewett" family is extinct in the male line (meaning no male heirs have that last name anymore), there is a line of "prewitts", descended from leander prewett, whose son's name was changed accidentally at st mungo's due to an administrative error and was never changed back. they still live on to this day but are no longer pureblood

the weasleys and the prewetts are distantly related through a common ancestor, resulting in the shared genetic traits of red hair, long features (like noses, ears, or head shape), freckles, and pale skin. though, don't worry: by molly and arthur's time, this is pretty distant (they are not pulling a black-marrying-their-cousin thing i promise)

the vanity family are maori/pacific islander, with wiremu kauri being stationed in the uk during the first world war and eventually staying there, changing his name to william vanity (based on his family's common nicknames or teasing of him being too proud; it was also an extinct pureblood name that would allow for safety in the puritanical society), and having children, including daniel, father of emma vanity and her sisters. william's brother, nikau, later joined him and took the last name vane instead, resulting in romilda vane in the 1990s

william's then girlfriend (later wife), sally flint, used her former entanglement with the nott heir (who had access to family records going back centuries) to forge a connection between william and the historical vanitys to secure his protection in pureblood society, given that william back home didn't have the same ideas of blood purity and could have faced major backlash, especially for marrying sally (she was also the first woman to serve on the wizengamot in the 1930s and never backed down from challenging the flint's notoriously problematic beliefs. she rocks)

his paternal grandmother was veela, leading to the pale, delicate, and attractive features for which the malfoys are known for (though veela aren't considered purebloods, the malfoys and veela go way back, though the malfoys generally refuse to acknowledge any rumours of veela heritage publicly to preserve their image)

has two cousins, xenophilius (seven years younger) and xanthe (twelve years younger)

his mother is french, so lucius spent some of his formative years at the bonaccord manor in northern france. otherwise, he was raised at malfoy manor in wiltshire, england, where his family often hosted pureblood galas and events

was betrothed to andromeda black before she ran off with ted tonks and was disowned. afterwards, narcissa black requested to marry him instead of corban yaxley and was given permission

lucius grew up with the black sisters and found narcissa cute, if a little immature (he was also not terribly fond of andromeda, finding her to be too strong willed for his taste). when they are brought together in the two year engagement period (to cover up andromeda's mistake), he falls quickly in love with narcissa, becoming one of the very few who knows her beyond her mask and truly understands her

doesn't have friends so much as he has connections. his proximity to the black sisters as well as the children of the knights of walpurgis through his father are really all he needs

he sees potential pretty immediately in a young severus snape, becoming one of the few to extend him kindness and take him under his wing. he isn't terribly bothered by severus being a half-blood in private (the malfoys having complicated ties to muggles) because he views severus as an asset

an absolute beast at wizard chess

can be very coercive and even manipulative in order to achieve his goals. somehow comes across as charming and slimy simultaneously

his dad's death when lucius was sixteen was a deeply devastating blow. he looked up to abraxas like no one else, and felt aimless afterwards. when he later committed to following in his father's footsteps and continuing his legacy without questioning it, that was the first time he felt powerful and in control since abraxas' death, and is a sensation he is constantly chasing

after marrying narcissa and inheriting the malfoy land and wealth, lucius quit his job at the ministry, though he maintained those connections he had made by hanging around the building, working secretly to advance the death eater agenda

a new interlude!! that's right, it's a double release day!

this one is called "interlude - bite the hand", set in the founders era and following the lives of the four founders and the creation of hogwarts, through the eyes of rowena ravenclaw's forgotten daughter, honora.

this interlude isn't required for the main story but answers some questions from chapter 28! plus, it was super fun to write and i hope it will be fun to read!

hi how are youuuu <3 my schedules about to clear up and then i shall devour chapter 27 LMAO (also just curious, how long do you hope for valkyrie to end up being?)

heyyy! i'm chilling tbh, taking care of some personal stuff (i'm involved in theatre locally so we're sorting out logistics for the fall right now, really exciting) and trying to write in between! i hope you enjoy chapter 27, it's.... a lot lol

in terms of length, i don't have a set number in mind. my planning document charts out one chapter per month, but sometimes i'll split that up into two or double months up into one. i chart via plot points that i want to hit, but also whims lol. if a character moment occurs to me and its corresponding plot point needs to be changed, i'm all for that. it's loosey-goosey in a good way, so i can follow the flow of the story, but i also know roughly what's going to happen

but to answer your question with a little bit of math, 1-2 chapters per month until the end of 1981 means about 20 odd chapters for that section of valkyrie, before the second part shifts to a style akin to the interludes (of which you have only seen one, but more are coming!) where years are combined, following one or more characters as a focus across a period of time. i can't tell you how many there will be of those because spoilers, but those will last up until about the end of the second wizarding war. there's also an epilogue!

all this to say, i'll be working on this for a while more, which i'm so excited for. i love this story and i love being able to flex my creative muscle in a bit of a less structured or regimented way. my hope is that i don't leave this story on a cliffhanger or abandon it completely, so i'm writing as much as i can to ensure that!! rest assured, these characters will be laid to rest at the appropriate times

in the meantime, i'm working on more pureblood family headcanons, character sheets, interludes, and even a uquiz for a few of the characters in valkyrie! stay tuned for that :)
