Marie Howe, MAGDALENE: THE ADDICT, from “Magdalene: Poems”
[”I liked Hell, I liked to go there alone relieved to lie in the wreckage, ruined, physically undone. The worst had happened. What else could hurt me then? I thought it was the worst, thought nothing worse would come. Then nothing did, and no one.”]

a significant part of my resentment toward happy, shiny regency fiction really is because of what a bad rap the victorians specifically tend to get in comparison.
i’ve always felt that one flannery o’connor quote about southern u.s. literature can also be applied here: anything that comes out of the victorian era is going to be called grotesque by the regency romance fan, unless it is grotesque, in which case it is going to be called realistic.
#trust. the imperialism and the mangled child laborers did not magically begin appearing in 1837.#nixe has a word.

They need to make more fiction about how the regency sucked. the reason everyone's sick of fiction about regency britain and ireland is because they keep making shows and stuff about how it was allegedly great and not enough shows about losing your arm in the peninsular war and then losing your other arm in the linen worker meat mincer 5000 while you're trying to work to feed your starving family who all have smallpox
#yeah! the regency’s had it too good for too long!#- your friendly neighborhood filthy victorian.#text.
