asmodeus was the king of demons in jewish mythology. according to the apocryphal book of tobit, asmodeus, smitten with love for sarah, the daughter of raguel, killed her seven successive husbands on their wedding nights. following instructions given to him by the angel raphael, tobias overcame asmodeus and married Sarah. the talmud relates that solomon captured the demon and pressed him into slave labour during the construction of the first temple of jerusalem. other haggadic legends depict asmodeus as a more beneficent figure.

kelpie is a shape-shifting spirit inhabiting lochs in scottish folklore. it is usually described as a black horse-like creature, able to adopt human form. some accounts state that the kelpie retains its hooves when appearing as a human. the origins of narratives about the creature are unclear but the practical purpose of keeping children away from dangerous stretches of water.

vodyanoy is said to appear as a naked old man with a frog-like face, greenish beard, and long hair, with his body covered in algae and muck, usually covered in black fish scales; сonsequently, he is often dubbed "grandfather" or "forefather" by the local people. he has webbed paws instead of hands, a fish's tail, and eyes that burn like red-hot coals. he usually rides along his river on a half-sunken log, making loud splashes. local drownings are said to be the work of the vodyanoy. when angered, the vodyanoy breaks dams, washes down water mills, and drowns people and animals. consequently, fishermen, millers, and also bee-keepers make sacrifices to appease him. the vodyanoy would sometimes drag people down to his underwater dwelling to serve him as slaves.
